There is just so much beach at Mablethorpe, not just at the town, but for miles and miles either way, over 50 miles of it:

      https://tinyurl.com/r29z5px

The Coast Path covers the whole coastline and will eventually open up the whole of the East Coast. That’s why there may be a lot of bikes and support vehicles, but the beaches are mostly flat and it all looks lost in so much space. Having been here for almost 20 years now, and visited for years before the move here, we now know some places that the ‘grockles’ don’t see and most locals don’t either. There is one tiny beach, hidden from the narrow road and surrounded by high (for Lincs!) banks, that I found whilst exploring with my eldest grandson when he was 3. He’s now 26 in January but we still call that “Jack and granddad’s beach” because he christened it so. Actually, I was ‘grandbob’ in those days, to differentiate from his other grandad, that he has not seen for years now.

So the races are not a manic charge like Weston, Dave and the town is not as packed as Margate, JayCeeDee. The beach is over and well forward of the defence banks created after the ’53 floods and most bikers vehicles pass through Mablethorpe arriving and departing. With several good cafes and chippies (even a cocktail bar in summer!) right on the prom, eats are always available.

I love the empty beaches in winter. My SIL, a Brummy townie, brought his townie dog when he met my daughter. I looked after Rebel for two weeks of their first holiday, in February. Took Rebel, a big friendly Lab cross, to Mablethorpe North end and he went berserk, running round in ever increasing circles. You can always spot the townie dogs in winter, which is the only time they are allowed on the beaches. They go mad at the spaces: one or two have simply disappeared into the horizon. Rebel lived to a grand age of 16 and passed last year, quietly in his sleep. That dog was a favourite of the whole family.

Bob, remember mine was a wish list I am not a seer And it was only half right.

          Les.

Closer than any of us Les!

You may like to ask her who she thinks “they” are, it is a very serious question but the response is usually hilarious.

I did Graham: ME – “Who are the ‘they’ you speak of?

          “The capitalist establishment!”

ME – “That’s an oxymoron.”   Yep, you guessed it – “Who are you calling a moron?”

You could not make it up. I stopped winding the silly child up at that point. Gdaughter says that this friend of hers became an ex-friend because gd stopped being a chef and became a bank employee, currently trying out a business banking course after working in two banks. She became stupidly jealous of my gd and started taking the p**s, forgetting that gd has about twice her IQ and is much bigger too. There was some kind of confrontation. You don’t mess with my gd. I won’t tell her about this current argument, she loves her granddad!

Carry out VFM’s procedure, but leave the side panels off if you can as you add components. That may show up something on the mobo.

The one woman Labour MP I would like to see as leader is Harriet Harman, leading a more moderate party. Making a clean sweep of the Trotskyites who have infested the party under Corbyn. But I think there are some lean wilderness years to come for Labour. Atm I am engaged in what began as a debate with one of my granddaughter’s ex-friends. She is advocating an attack upon Downing Street: “They can’t stop us all.” Yes they can I replied, and they will. Then I asked her if she supports democracy and she said yes. So why do you want to attack the choice of a majority of voters, I said, that is not democracy. Now she and her BF are almost rabid in their condemnation of the election result. I know and talk to a lot of young people and these two are symptomatic of the ones who followed Corbyn.

It seems to be the style of some on FB to not accept a democratic decision, and portray those who voted Tory as some kind of traitors to a cause they only half understand.

In 1971 (IIRC) there was a plot to manufacture and fire a home made multi barrel mortar into Downing Street. Tests by Long Range Snipers (otherwise known as the Royal Artillery) from a distance and wire-guided, proved that it was wildly inaccurate and in fact the whole thing blew to pieces during the second trial, conducted on Salisbury Plain. I was between tours of N.I. at the time, but the RA regiment next to our BAOR barracks had a serving member I knew from home. He told me all about the hare – brained scheme, which would apparently have missed the intended target but caused some damage, civilian deaths and injuries. It might also have blown up and destroyed the truck and occupants. Either way would have suited the IRA: dead Brits or martyrs to The Cause.

The plot was foiled thanks to some very good intelligence work by 14 Int, the RUC and the Special Branch working together.

I expected a Tory minority government, so not a case of Great Expectations, more WTF just happened here? I should have known better: as Boris said in very good speech, people outside London and the SE who had never voted Conservative, did so. In droves. Places that I know in the North and Midlands, always returned a Labour candidate in election after election, voted Boris. Not Tory, Boris. I do not believe that any other Conservative leader has ever attracted such support from those quarters. The one clear message that the new PM needs to take from those people, is that he needs to support his fine words with the right actions. Labour have only themselves to blame. I have been speaking with some of the young people I know today and there is one message from all but two of them: they did not like JC. After all the “Oh Jeremy Corbyn” BS, his attraction for the younger voters is plainly bowlocks, trumped up by the Party apparatchiks. Rent a Crowd tactics, in many cases. MY SIL has it nailed down – “I did not want to have a Communist Prime Minister.”

I will pay Boris this compliment, as we all await the next moves. He is a fine orator, with a very good speech writer. Now he has to make actions fit words.

Hopefully you’re right Steve, and I can continue to use the Netflix.

TCB, know what you mean – I live in a village that lies in the shadow of the Lincolnshire Wolds, which sort of curl around us. Reception of anything is bad: TV, DAB, but worst is mobile, a mast was supposed to be erected about 6 years ago but it has not happened yet. This extends down to my son & daughter’s village 6 miles away and their phone signal is patchy. Just 3 miles down the road the other way is Louth and it has perfect reception, plus a contest between Virgin and BT which Virgin mostly won. Which is funny, because BT have the local exchange in Louth. Now Louth has more Virgin cabinets than BT, and BT have started moving into the villages: even two years ago, we villagers were the Broadband poor relations. Now there are Openreach vans all over the villages, fitting fibre cabinets.

TV was settled by a new transmitter option and a village resident who supplies and fits TV and comms commercially. That’s why there are really high aerials on all our houses, with heavy strapping around the mountings.  I eventually sorted DAB when I found an antenna that worked:  https://tinyurl.com/rse34ax

I found the best reception for it was behind the TV, on the TV stand bracket. Now SWMBO gets clear radio when ironing. I spoil my lady! The bad reception has also stopped us getting a Smart Meter: even the latest Smets2 cannot work here. Tried it with my energy supplier EDF and also 3 others: input the postcode and all I get is “Not possible at this time for this postcode.” If you want Freesat at your location, unless you already have a dish you need to buy one. Here’s how to find an installer:   https://tinyurl.com/vfexy2n

Dishes are available on Ebay. Here’s a pretty good kit, for either Sky or Freesat, which is what is needed as the LNB will suit both:     https://tinyurl.com/v4hqd6l

Make sure any fitter can tune the dish to Freesat.

My late, much-missed Fil was the last stationmaster at Clay Cross, Derbyshire in 1962 and he would agree with your last statement, Dave. He had progressed in the British Rail system from Porter, across the UK in various stations,* until that post. His view of Dr. Beeching was not exactly complimentary and he worked in a time when timekeeping was of the essence. He was a stickler for accurate timekeeping, even in retirement. I had not been married to his middle daughter for long when we arranged tp pick them up for a Welsh holiday, at 0830. I got to the road at exactly 0829, but drove around the block until 0840.

“Where have you been? We said 0830!”

“Yes I know dad, but I am never on time as you know, I got to the house on time and just could not ruin my reputation.”

He frowned, then laughed like a drain. We became good friends and I hope he respected me as much as I did him.

*I tell my missus she was a Traveller.

Exactly, Ed. It’s the higher frequencies in the gas turbines that cause most damage. The RR Nimbus Mk. 10501 used in the Westland Scout, made my teeth itch if I was too close and it lifted vertically. Everyone on the Apron turning away with pained expressions. Of course we had ear defenders, which were mostly worn around the shoulders so that we could hear each other shout!

That’s right, JayCeeDee, it’s on my desktop and tablet.:

Steve, I meant that my No.2 gson put me on his account 2 years ago. I have heard rumours that Netflix are going to act against sharing like that. If they do, I will just get my own account. Gson lives about 6 miles away down the Mablethorpe road. When he set it up for me, he gave me that cheeky grin of his and said “This is the gift that keeps on giving, granddad!”

wasbit: looks like it’s an ongoing problem with the FVP 5000, but using Ethernet connection can cure it:

When I first setup our HDR-1100S, we had all kinds of trouble with it. The dish and LNB were originally Sky until I elbowed Sky, bought another LNB and connected that. This was at a time when my FTTC Download was fluctuating from 11 Mbps to less than 2Mbps and the village was having problems with Broadband and phones. Last year BT were pressured by our MP, Parish, District and County Councils into giving us Superfast BB. The cabinet’s fibre capacity was not enough and the whole village crashed: by this time our MP had moved up in Westminster to become a favourite of the last 3 PM’s. As a result she got the Minister’s ear, he bent BT’s and we have a cabinet twice the size of the original new one. Now we have a Download of 70+Mbps and a very happy Bob! Not had any problems with freezing or stuttering, but all Humax boxes take ages to boot up and ours is no exception, although it does occasionally act on its own initiative and record programmes that we have not set to record. I always connect via Ethernet, never by WiFi.

TCBarrett: Do you mean recording live TV from “vanilla” Freeview, Freesat, or another source? If Freeview or Freesat, a Humax will do that, but I recommend an Ethernet connection.

I have the answer to fidelity issues, too many Motorhead concerts in your youth. Saved me a fortune on posh kit.

😀 Me too Dave, too many Stones, Who, Clapton & other concerts. Range firing every 3 months for 12 years didn’t help, engine noise in garage work and AAC heli’s.  Headphones without my Hearing Aids are my best chance of listening properly. In the car on my own, out come the H. A’s and on goes some rock. Loud: has to be or I wouldn’t hear it enough to sing along. One conversation with a neighbour, as I came home once and opened the car door without switching off the music:

                                  “Are you f ‘in deaf?”

                                  “WHAT?”

“I SAID, ARE YOU F’IN DEAF?”

(Switch off music) – “What?”     –    “I said, are you f’in deaf?”    “What?”     “Oh, get stuffed!”

“What?”  –  I don’t think he ever understood that I could hear him perfectly well. If he had not been the one objectionable, obnoxious neighbour that no one liked, I would have answered him properly.

                                    BBC: iPlayer, Sport, News Channel.

ITV Hub, MY5, UKTV Play, Rakuten TV, CBS Catchup, YouTube, STV Player, Horror bites, POP Fun, Ketchup Kids, France 24, Eros Now (Bollywood I think)

Lots of Utter Dross in there of course. I also have Netflix on my PC and tablet, thanks to No.2 Gson. Don’t know how long they will let that happen though.

Ed, I would be happy with any AI that could find a way for the NHS Digital systems to talk to each other. They have only been trying since 2013, after all. Perhaps the fact that they launched for the first time on April 1st had something to do with it…

It is expensive: I have the Freesat HDR- 1100S, although I got that for £50 less from Currys, as I had a £50 voucher from another purchase which was faulty (Steam iron) and kicked up so much fuss when they would not return my money that they gave me the money and the voucher, expecting me to buy another iron. I bought the Humax instead, got the same iron cheaper elsewhere, and it’s still working almost 3 years later. The 1100S gets Netflix, iPlayer and OD for several channels.

But TBF, Dave – if you check out the remote control pic in that Amazon link, it shows buttons for Netflix and On Demand.

BL – ” something that had support for Netflix, Prime, NowTV etc… ” No Prime or NowTV, but as above, buttons for Netflix and OD.

As you both say, it’s another technology that is past its sell by date. My Freesat is going as soon as I can get my Gson to come and help me with some leccy bits, then I will have a reorganisation of all my AV stuff, including Prime Video at last.

The three major fields that I can see AI struggling with, at least for the next 5 to 10 years:

Prediction – what to do about futures, how to forecast trends with any expectation of accuracy.

Decision – how to instil/programme decision making, again with an expectation of accuracy. Some of the activities/industries that AI will have to work with, require decisions that will have repercussions for the Earth and all of humanity.

Control – how much control over processes and procedures, to hand over to any AI, in order for the results to be free of errors that may also have repercussions.

But the most difficult quality to emulate IMO, is how to instil the one characteristic that certain humans possess, which has always brought progress. (beneficial or otherwise). Intuition.

Positive results will also be affected by the humans and organisations who produce, manufacture and market AI devices and machines. As matters stand now, only multinational companies have the clout and the finance to do all that. They are not noted for their altruism. Some form of UN oversight and international cooperation will be necessary, I believe.

                                          Good luck with that.

I am a big Dylan fan, always have been. I saw a Dylan interview on German TV in around 1969, in which he said that it was not about drugs at all, but about the psychological and mental equivalent of being physically stoned as punishment, by people in the Western musical and entertainment business, who didn’t understand him or other singer/songwriters and therefore hated them.

Some of his stuff after the 70’s was garbage, he came out with some dross as well as the good stuff. But I always go back to the first track I ever heard, from the “Bringin’ It All Back Home” album: Subterranean Homesick Blues”. I walked into a new barracks and heard that coming from a bunk, got to know the bloke playing it and was hooked, never heard anything like it, blew me away. There never had been anything like it, Dylan was a one-off.
