Not forgetting that Amazon is a lot less hassle than some Ebay activity.

No painkillers for me. I have an inbuilt hatred of pills from childhood, my abusive mother was subject to a mental problem and would take anything any medical person gave her. Including heavy doses of sleeping pills, which led in later years to confusion and some mistakes in judgement. Twice she flooded the house, another time caused a fire which I managed to kill before more than one room was affected. All caused by the effects of too many doses of wrong or conflicting medication.

I was very fortunate to have a HK Chinese mate who taught me how to meditate and I do that several times a week. If I have the first onset of real pain, I can enter a trance and move it on. I can set my mind to a time limit and come out in 5 or 10 minutes, by which time I have moved the pain. It doesn’t disappear, it is still there, but at a distance. I bless the name and memory of Victor Lim, who taught me as much about Eastern thinking as he did about meditation.

I cannot take anti-inflammatories anyway: my internals are so messed up now that I have to be so careful what I put into them. I do what works for me.

Edited to correct the difference between ‘medicate’ & ‘meditate’ One letter would have changed the whole meaning of the post.

Years ago I went to a private Physio, it cost me a bomb. Then the guy said he was moving and I would have another one from the practice. Phoned me before he left and advised me that there was nothing else he could do, no point in going again. I would have respected him more if he said that before I spent so much there. But the consultant I was seeing then was a useless oldphart, retired and the next guy told me there was nothing they could do for me. He was a bit gobsmacked when I said thank you for that, but i would rather hear that then go on thinking that they could do something. Some years later I had the op that kept me walking.

What kind of crutch do you have Nolan? I found that the private Mobility places have better than the NHS. I went through 3 NHS elbow crutches, all weak.

I missed all that early stuff, was doing lots of other stuff and shared the morbid fear of computers that some 90% of the populace must have had then. I won a competion with WH Smith and Memorex cassettes (!) in about 1980 and went to the store to collect. I could buy a computer, books or albums with my £1,500. I was a workshop foreman at the time, not interested in the ‘pooter, bought some vinyl and books. Then the local manager offered me a holiday, by circumventing the rules: I book it and he puts the remaining £1, 400+ (in WHS vouchers) through the till for a few months. Went to B.C. in Canada for a couple of weeks, motels and hire car. Wonderful, wonderful holiday. Oh, and I also got 50 Memorex cassettes, some of which I still have!

So I am not one of the oldpharts with an original ‘pooter history, had to struggle to catch up. Which I almost have, thanks to MM and you guys. What goes around, comes around… :bye:

Ordered a new doorbell from Amazon late last night, not a Prime customer and used the Standard delivery option. Just got back online now, email says it will be here tomorrow. This is not unusual, I have had next day deliveries if I order early enough. Amazon has a lot of sneerers, but I like it.

Doorbell is German, also works as a burglar alarm inside on the two receivers. The last one was by some Chinese outfit, bought in a local *store. Cost half the price and let in water. Have to see if I get what I pay for I guess

*Called “Trotter’s Traders”. Seriously, they do a roaring trade in cheapo stuff, started with one shop and moved to a superstore-size place on the edge of town. Everything from carpets to food, to tools, curtains, blinds, loads of stuff, some good, some not so good. Cushty, Rodney!  :yahoo: This time next year, New York. Or Lincoln, anyway. :good:

And they didn’t have to buy the name, Beeb had not thought of copyright and was told that it was used in another context anyway. There is even Del Boy’s van pictured on the wall, without the graphics. B-)

I used to buy via Facebook groups. I stopped doing it, as I found all too often that the items were faulty. It seemed to be a place for folks to offload junk with no comeback. eBay sales are very slow this month. Not unusual for January. My sales have more than halved. I may have to get a proper job at this rate. ?

Jason: I offered a demo of every item to be fully working or  fit for purpose, to those who came to view. Only one was not bothered, so I made 2 copies of a receipt and made him sign before paying for the Books I had for sale. I only sell on FB to local groups.

I understand that you believe I went too far by saying that we are at war with Islam, Dave. But I cannot agree with your statement regarding N.I. and being at war with Catholicism: neither the Pope, the Catholic church nor any priest* declared war upon the UK, of which of course Ulster is a part. I served there more than once and we squaddies never felt ourselves to be fighting a religion, nor any of its representatives.  We knew within a very short time that the undeclared war was against terrorists on both sides who became gangsters, ruling their areas with an iron fist and controlling drug gangs to make money for their “Cause”.     * Although I know of at least one priest who hid weapons for the PIRA, because my section found them in his church and were rewarded with a torrent of most unholy abuse from the Reverend Father himself. Wonder where, and to whom, he confessed? Incidentally, I was tasked with ordering my lads to keep silent about the location of the weapons, by Those Upstairs.

I have no personal animosity towards Islam: I have several Muslim friends in 3 different towns who actually share my POV in private and they keep me informed regarding the fanatical views held by people who attend their mosques. They also tell me that the fanaticism is spreading amongst the vulnerable young and it will only get worse. It terrifies them: they are middle aged or older, have families and dare not speak about any of this openly.

Yes, there are always people with a cause who want to kill or die for it, but the danger now is that the fanatics are spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world, including the UK. They have been told to stay hidden and act normally as citizens, until  they are needed to act. That is why we have the incidents of terrorist attacks, followed by their hitherto unsuspecting family members and friends making statements to the effect that the perpetrators were decent people whom they would never have thought capable of such acts. In short, they can hide amongst millions of their fellows, they are embedded in our society (but do not want to share our values) and, despite the best efforts of our Security Services, they are organised and will only have to get lucky once. This is a ticking bomb. Trump recognises this, no matter what anyone thinks of him, he is right and all western politicians should realise that.

I sold a TV, DVDRW recorder, HiFi and several more bits and bobs on FB “Buy and Sell” groups. Posted in November, all gone by Christmas. These are local groups to each area, which FB picks up from your location, but you can extend the area. Look to the LH side for “Buy and Sell Groups.” These had been advertised on Gumtree and in local shops, no response. I always try FB B&S Groups first.

The fact is that we are at war with Islam and have been since the USA and UK, along with others, decided to retaliate to 9/11 and 7/7 by creating wars which could not be “won” but which resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Until Trump, no Western politician has had the nerve (or stupidity) to smash the staus quo and admit it. Merkel cravenly admits almost a million Islamic immigrants into her country, whilst censuring Hungary and others for resisting the call to share them around Europe.

A situation created by American and British politicians has resulted in deaths and attacks throughout Europe and security measures which produces armed police and/or soldiers at airports throughout the world. If our country had been invaded, bombed and shelled by another, how would we react when the invaders left and our nation was left in a state of leaderless anarchy, with more deaths after the invasion than duringthe military actions? Islam in the Middle East is divided into factions which are drawing smaller nations into the orbit of the two wealthiest, most militarily powerful ones. Sooner or later, there will be open conflict between the Sauds and Iran. I say we should stay out of the area and defend our own borders, whilst dealing with the fanatics here at home.

Trump is not the problem, he is the one pointing out the problem. Unfortunately, his predecessors created it. Any solution he might present, is what really worries me.

I could get very annoyed thinking about the money we lost on the house we sold in Nottinghamshire, until I remenber why we sold it to move here to this beautiful Lincolnshire village, with really good neighbours and friends. For £28K, we bought a mid-terrace, 3-bed, ex-NCB estate house with no SUDG and solid fuel central heating which heated just 5 radiators. The boiler was a huge, ancient thing and I contacted a Mechanical Engineer mate, to quote me on GCHeating. Fitted that with all new rad’s in every room, my mate said that the old coal boiler could have supplied heat to 2 more houses. It used to take me 3 Collier’s shovels (huge, semi-circular pan shovels) of coal just to get the thing to heat up, there was no control over it whatsoever and it would shake, rattle and roll  all the time. Fortunately, my son was an electrician and completely rewired the house for me. Then I took out the bathroom/WC at the rear of the lounge, moved it upstairs, knocked the wall out with a new RSJ and made a lovely rounded archway into the old bathroom space, where I put up large amounts of shelving to take my books and music. Then we had SUDG installed throughout, which was the worst work done on the place. I refused to pay the guy full price, he took us to the Small Claims Court and lost. I had photographs of his crappy efforts and a report from another builder: he had nothing but References. That’s fine, said the retired magistrate, but those jobs do not apply to this one; return the money you have been paid. I used that money to get the windows ripped-out and replaced by someone who knew what he was doing.

Then, a couple of years after the pit finally closed, a Housing association began buying up the empty NCB houses. Then moving in undesirables. There were riots, drugs and burglaries in the village. We had spent an estimated £7,500 (up to 1999) on the place and disability hit me, I was out of work. We sold for a little less than we paid for it and moved to Lincolnshire.

The young couple who bought it, sold it 3 years ago. For £92,000, but we are not at all bothered. The area is still subject to the same problems and I always wonder when I go through the village now to my parents’ graves, why I waited so long to move.

Good luck Nolan, hope that you get through your troubles OK. Also the respective good ladies of Steve and Richard, hope they see better health soon.

I have recorded my own Arthritis woes before on that other forum, not going to go into that, but taking a bit of a fork in the road.

I never believed in what I saw as all the hype about Stains, especially after the original meds that my GP prescribed, made me feel washed – out and without energy. Then he changed them for ‘Pravastatin’ and it took a couple of weeks, but in that time I got some energy back and another blood test showed my Cholestorol level down below what they call ‘average’ whatever that means. I am also sleeping better. Some of this may be due to drinking lots of “Volvic” water instead of tap water, which around here is really hard stuff. There used to be a Village Pump by the building which used to be the Post Office, which apparently according to the village History gave soft water, up through natural rock and sand filters. Progress! Now we have to use a Water Softener to do the wash, which would be OK if SWMBO did have the habit of adding “a bit more” in the machine, the consequence of which means that I leave a flowery trail behind me wherever I walk, after a recent change of clothing. Going to bed after a change of bedding, is like going to sleep in a garden full of flowers.  🙂

The big problems for me at the moment is Ganglions, lumps which apparently form at joints and tendons. They are cysts caused by leakage from joints into tissue. I have had one of these for many years on my right wrist, which restricts movement and function in that hand, and of course I am a Righty. However, lately they are coming and going all over fingers, elbows and toes and the GP (when available 🙁 ) is unable to decide what to do about it. In a couple of weeks I am due to have the annual camera and biopsy performance, from two directions. This is my annual Plumbing examination, as I have piping problems Front and Rear. I will try to ask about the Ganglions before they send me on the Trip.

As you say Nolan, there are others worse off than me. I never forget that, were it not for one brilliant Spinal Neurosurgeon in 2005, I would have been a qaudriplegic. The thought of that is enough to make me count my blessings.

Looks like what we used to call in the Army Air Corps “Testing Under Service Conditions”. That means that Aircrew are nothing more than crash test dummies. There was another one: “Testing Under Active Service Conditions.” The first had a different title applied by Aircrew and groundcrew: ‘Tested Until Someone Crashes’. The second is something I would not repeat even here. :negative:

The second category applied to the Westland Scout Helicopter. Its first (Nimbus) engine was a disaster and many were lost in the Borneo Confrontation, and the Aden struggle, both of which I remember well. Wiki says that the airframe was ‘robust’ which is something that aircrew and groundcrew who flew and maintained the Scout, will dispute. Even a reasonably soft landing on tarmac, could bend the undercarriage cross tubes, the (unofficial) solution being to remove them, rotate through 180° and refit. I cannot remember the service interval, but the u/c had to be removed and crack-tested at very short intervals during its life. Invariably, there were cracks.    The WIKI story:   https://tinyurl.com/gswxtew

As an aside: whilst serving in BAOR, every year of my total of 8 years there, I was part of a team from my unit which went to a spot near the Czech border to ski, under Norwegian Army instruction. One year we decided to build a huge toboggan from various bits around Workshop, Stores and “Other Sources”. We used a scrap u/c from a Scout. Twenty+ mad Brit squaddies hurtling down a Bavarian mountain slope in a large toboggan is great for the first few times. Until the path neccessarily deviates, due to the original runs removing snow and ice. We hit a large, buried rock with obvious consequences. Those who were not injured (including myself, fortunately) were laughing like maniacs. The Norwegian Army instructors refused to instruct us further and said that all Brits are insane. I suppose they had a point…  B-)

                                        Hi Drezha

A mate was going to move there until yesterday, when his Mancunian GF saw sense and came down to him in Lincolnshire instead. 🙂

He had this Link to prices up there, with a warning to review the areas carefully.

Hope it helps, gives you an idea of prices.

Once, a long time ago on a planet in another galaxy, someone who looked a lot like me told his children that the ice cream man was a very nasty man who kidnapped children. This person was skint and about to lose the house. Some time later (I am told) this person told the kids there was a new ice cream man who was a very good chap. However, the above person had to escort his children to the ice cream van. So I am reliably informed…. :negative:

A big daddy did it and ran away.

Got excited about this, as I am going to be selling some tech and ‘pooter stuff this year (directions from distaff side)

Then I find that Lincolnshire loses out yet again: nothing nearer than Kings Lynn. Almost 45 miles away, through the madness that is Boston, probably 55 miles the long, but sane, way round. Bugga!
