I can add to the above, that sometimes you may have to run    sfc /scannow     a couple more times. I don’t know why this should be, but it did help me to fix another, different problem, after advice from No.1 grandson.

I have returned from the electronic trenches. I asked Sky why they threw out my ID sign in and they had no answer, they say that they would send me the ID they had, which proved to be the one I always used. On their advice, I set up a new password and could not sign in. I setup a new username and password and still could not sign in. Then I closed Firefox, reopened it, used the old original username and password, and was accepted. So I changed the password again just to be safe, and was accepted.

After my head stopped spinning, I had a look at Sky mobile. For TV customers, unlimited text and calls, 1 GB of data, £10 a month. There is a Rollover of data which lasts 3 years. Now I am checking Tesco.

Steve, I have never spoken to an Irish voice on a Sky CS call. Glaswegian, Merseyside and an English BBC accent only. That’s the one I have trouble with, sounds like she has a plum in her mouth. Or something…

On another forum there are lots of complaints about Smart Meters, the most prevalent is that they cannot be used after a change of supplier. I will not have one and I told EDF so when they asked if I wanted one. I told them no way would I have one and that I was fully aware that it was not, and never would be, compulsory. They accepted that with good grace.

Incidentally: I don’t know if other County & District Councils have done this, but Lincolnshire CC and all the component District CC’s formed an alliance to ask for energy quotes in blocks, from various suppliers, to find the cheapest. They sent letters and emails to any households who wished to join. We put in our Annual/monthly usage in £ or KwH, they collect numbers and approached suppliers for block discounts. When one supplier makes an offer, that supplier has to sign an undertaking with the Council for a Fixed Price over a period of at least 12 months, for each household. Apparently more than 60% of Lincolnshire households use the service. (Although the Cannabis Growers have other arrangements.)

For the last 3 years I have had offers from this setup, but have not received an offer which would save me more than £50 annually. As I get great Customer Service from EDF, I don’t think that is worthwhile. I can take a reading, email it and receive a new bill within 2 working days. Their website is a model others should follow: if I have a problem, I use the site Chatline and it is sorted by people who know what they are doing.

Billions of boring words, actions and images collected, for what? US and UK Security agencies are past the point of paranoia and far along the path of intellectual stupidity.

How does it help them with national security? Don’t ask my fridge, it’s dumb, just keeps on working for the last 8 years without protest. The new steam iron is a bit suspect though, has to be. SWMBO just picked it up and used it without asking for help. So did I, come to think of it, made a nice job of my trousers. :good:  :yahoo:

Jumping in here: I am looking to escape EE and considering Tesco after reading comments here. I agree with your “nothing anywhere” comments Richard: when it comes to having no signal in my own village, and no interest in a solution from EE via online or shops, I want out. I know Tesco will not be able to cure that, but at least their CS appear to be interested in customers.

Sky have opened a new mobile service, so I went to their website and attempted to sign in with the ID that I have used since last October and is saved on my browser. “Sorry but we do not recognise that username and password”.

I am now off to do battle with the Sky CS phone. I may need a lie down later….

If I cannot sign in becaues sky does not recognise my ID, I cannot contact them.

I will not get angry, it’s bad for me. I will not get angry, it’s bad for me. I will not get angry, it’s bad for me. I will not get angry, it’s bad for me. I will not get angry, it’s bad for me…..

The mechanic is Hungarian and I am told he is apparently rather good at finding and fixing such problems, I just hope the stories are true. His training was at the school of, if you want a spare part make it yourself as they are out of stock until next January 12 month. [/quote]

Richard: if he’s a good mech, cultivate the guy!

I went to that same school, working on Classics means having a lathe, pedestal drill and milling machine, plus lots of spare bits of materials, is de rigeur. :good:  🙂  Oh, the stories I could tell…wait though, told some here already!  :yahoo:

I ran 97 and Publisher 2000 while I was still working as a Printer, they served me well. Shortly after I retired and downsized everything, the 97 disc was found to be corrupted. Moved to Open Office, never looked back. Actually, looking back, I had Serif Page Plus before Publisher, could not get on with it, but took to Publisher immediately, wonderful programme. Thinking about Pub 2000 and 97 made me remember that sometimes Microsoft got things right, they worked together well and did exactly what I needed.

I still recall shoving all those (27?) floppies into the drive, to install Windows 95…. Happy Days! I still possess two floppies with all the M$ True Type fonts.  :bye:

Tangents are the best bit. Or at least they keep a stale topic going, if the topic it truly Interesting   and still had life, it will always revert back, if it doesn’t it is because they thread was finished.

Plus, if it wasn’t for tangents and personal touches,  tales and experiences, this forum would of died when MM did,as no one would of got to know each other and give a shit. It would just be another, sterile tech forum.

There is a place for that style of forum, but the forum itself (as in the site)  needs to have a dedicated focus, MM and now this doesn’t, it’s a general tech meet up area, like a geeky pub, that tech is main general topic on stead of football and ladies.

This is true. I’m always open to suggestion. What about sending sgb and bob on some sort of anti-tangent course ?

I can’t eat Curry, thanks to chicken wings on an HK street a long time ago. Did not listen to warnings, completely off my face after meeting two even drunker Russian sailors (bloody vodka!) and ate from the cheapest, nastiest street stall. Spent 3 days in the Sick Bay, every orifice leaking. Whenever I tried to eat curry after that, I came out in a rash and could crap through the eye of a needle at 50 paces. M.O. back at base, said I must be the only British Squaddie he ever knew who was allergic to curry. And I used to love the stuff.

                                That’s sad, Ed.

I can only speak of the ‘British’ Indians I know. Some are Hindu, one family is actually Christian, although the one amongst them that I know best, is a Sikh. All of them have friends in the Islamic community. A lot of that was caused by the older generation suffering being addressed for years as “P**i B*****ds”, no matter their origin, culture or beliefs. Here in this country.

My problem atm is someone on this Forum. I sent the person a parcel containing one of the last MM mags, have PM’d twice, emailed and a message on here, no result. Yes Ed, but Indian engineers work in the best traditions of British Victorian engineers: find the right tools and/or materials, or look for alternatives. –

                                      https://tinyurl.com/jxardg2

‘Make do and mend’ I think covers it. India has taken best working practices from us, along with the bureaucracy. This is a nation to watch, they improvise and struggle under the pressure of 1.25 billion people, a large proportion of which possess an entrepeneurial streak and the ambition of a starving tiger. It is no coincidence that some of the highest-earning professionals in the UK are either Indian, or of Indian descent. It is also no coincidence that many millions of them suffer in their native land, under poverty worse than that of early Victorian Britain, with a rigid class tructure that their leaders are attempting to overcome.

Thanks for the tip Richard, but I had already deposited a ‘final’ letter from each of my German children, with my solicitor, appended to the Will with my instructions and his legal comments regarding my position. They were both well over 21 at the time, the solicitor actually conducted a Search for them via a German lawyer friend of his and discovered what he needed to know. He was astonished at the tone and the language in the letters.

The female party had a Gasthaus, where I lived illegally when I should have been in barracks. I had a very understanding C.O. who turned a blind eye, but told me that it would end if I ever let him down. I never did, but he also met the she-dog and told me this would end in tears someday. I was on my way posted back to the UK for my last few months in service, expecting to take her and the children with me, when out of the blue, she refused to go and barred from the Gasthaus and the kids. I walked down the path for the last time in 1975, with a 5 and 7 yo crying behind me. I had a house and a job all setup.

I made up my mind to forget them, although the pain has decreased with the years, I can never forget them. Meeting and marrying my lovely SWMBO saved my life, I think. Having an instant family was icing on the cake.

If you do right, no one remembers. Do wrong, no one forgets.
