Good luck – make sure you label each box with its contents, and first on the van is the last off. i.e. kettle & tea/coffee should be last on!

      Great advice! :yahoo:  :good:

Thanks for that Steve, £1.99 a month for 100 GB sounds good to me. I will never go near anything to do with Yahoo if I can help it, too many problems for too long and they keep repeating the same security mistakes.

If you don’t have a pile of tall stuff to move Chris, I would suggest a SWB Transit Connect, for the economy and cost of rental. If you use one of the bigger companies, it might be possible to hire down in your area and leave it up there at another of their depots.

When my daughter decided to rebuild and sell her house, she moved to her partner’s place and stored tons of stuff in a secure outbuilding. The house being rebuilt is in a rural village, set way back from the road in the middle of farmland and cannot be seen from the road, so it’s safe. If you don’t know it’s location, you would never suspect there was a house there. Her partner (should call him SIL, been together a long time now) hired a Transit Connect and did it all in one.

Good luck with the move. One of the most stressfull times there can be: since 1984-ish I have moved 6 times. Not moving again, had that talk with SWMBO – “You move if you want to, I am staying!” :good:

I understand your point Jason, it’s clearly against copyright, but I have also bought CD’s from Amazon Music and downloaded the free MP3 tracks associated with the purchased CD. I have no idea how the law would apply when I give some of those CD’s to charity. The gift to charity then makes the CD’s second-hand, or pre-owned, however you think of it. Not dismissing your point, which is absolutely correct, just the stupidity of a law that could be applied to the sale or gifting of a pre-owned product. I have sold books and given many more to charity, how is that different? The Designer of any product: car, furniture, vase, pottery, musical instrument, in fact anything, cannot expect to own the copyright to that product and have a say in its future. As I have said, your legal point is well made. It’s the law that requires change.

Chris: I have quite a few of the larger Really Useful boxes, or should I say, I had a few. I bought several 2 years ago when SWMBO and I went for a Danube Cruise and had the whole place redecorated while away. They were stacked up 5 high in my big shed with household stuff, good job it has a solid base. After we unpacked them, our daughter moved to her partner’s house and began rebuilding her own for sale. Of course she needed boxes… Then our grandson found a flat and he needed boxes. I now have no clue how many I once had.  😥

Steve I like Amazon Music. after I might (someday) finish recording all my collection, I may well use Google Drive to store it, along with my photos. That will cost a bit I expect: I am not halfway through the music and already have 11 GB, 1,000’s of images. I also rip in 320 Kbps. My ears now cannot differentiate between that and WMA. I love rock music and hard Blues, so when I play the Stones, Creedence or any of the old Delta Blues men, the missus banishes me to this room and the headphones. She likes Billy Fury, think she’s been mourning his passing for years! He was the first ‘Liverpool Sound’ of course, before the Beatles, last night I got around to putting all his music on the NAS, was listening to a lot of it and remembered how good he was in most of it. I like all the Beatles’ early stuff, but not anything later, after the Maharishi and the drugs. It got all too weird for me. I particularly like Lennon singing “Revolution” – a real rocker.

Ripping tracks from YT is what my youngest gson does too. Speaking of music copyright issues, he rips CD’s full of requested music for his mates and others, also helps them with PC problems, all for a price. They have to supply the blank CD’s or USB sticks. He will either end up in nick or become a millionaire. Or both.

My ears are past the point of no return I’m afraid. When I was younger I had an amazing sound system, then time, relationship breakdown and associated financial ‘penalties’ intervened and I had to sell a great deal of good stuff to survive. That did not include my vinyl collection. Some of those are rare, including early 50’s records which are all in perfect nick, thanks to recording them to other media, becinning with open reel tape, cassettes, CD’s and now digitally transferred to Hdd’s.

After I met the love of my life, kids and more financial penalties prevented me from affording any expensive stuff. Now I can afford it, it has become irrelevant and I much prefer a good pair of headphones attached to the PC, or streaming 320 kbps MP3 around whatever outlet is nearest. I love 50’s, 60’s and 70’s rock: Stones, Creedence/John Fogerty, and Blues. I am saving for a decent Technics system that will allow me to record to & from vinyl, CD and USB: not too fancy, just good reproduction. I don’t have a separate sound card in the PC for the same reasons, the onboard card is fine for my purposes.

A related note- if your going f to a place your unsure about the parking a site/app card Just Park is fantastic. It’s people renting out their driveways. I use it for the football away games all the time. Good for London I found, instead of using the ridiculously priced car parks. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.justpark.jp

The number of times I could have used that app, Steve!

Oh, wait, mostly in the days before smartphones. Before mobiles, even. I once parked near South Africa Road (QPR) in what I thought was an abandoned piece of land, turned out it was a long dirt road up to someone’s driveway, round an unseen bend and behind trees. There was a guy waiting by my car when I came back, got really stroppy, would not listen to my apology, grabbed my shirtfront, so my mate chinned him and we drove off, my mate laughing his AO. Forest had won, we were in a good mood, so my mate only hit him the once…

I have Sky Bband, phone, calls and Q Box. I occasionally get an onscreen TV message “Your connection is not working” or similar. It drops out and in again almost instantaneously. On the very rare (1) occasion that it lasts longer than that, I scrolled down to “Settings” and checked the signal. It was reconnected before I got to that point. I have informed Sky about this, they wanted to send out an ‘engineer’ 🙂  but I always find another problem after one of those comes out.

We have also lost Wls connection to both Wiley Fox phones, but this happens more often. Along with the crap coverage around here and loss of EE signal most mornings, this is annoying. Strangely, the Lenovo tablet does not lose WiFi when the phones do.

The Parish Council has moved the District Council to ‘approach’ Lincolnshire C.C. about coverage and broadband issues. There are quite a few very expensive houses planned and passed for the village, so if the Yuppies get annoyed because they can’t get a Zillion Mbps Download, it might happen. As it is, our first new zillionaire Executive Home resident, moved in down the road a while back, is extremely cross about his Bband speeds. Nice guy actually, garage larger than 4 of our bungalows and several Classics, along with a modern Jag and an Aston. He liked the advice I gave him about the steering vibration in his ’61 E-Type, as I have worked on a few in the past. I like to see how the other 1% lives…

Les, do you have a friend whose PC you can try with the monitor? Just a thought, if it’s been covered in another post, forget it. Reason I propose this: I have a second-hand Iiyama 24″ ProLite, which had a VGA connection fault. I only found this out when using a KVM switch –     https://tinyurl.com/jmkmg39     – as I had always only connected to the decktop via HDMI.

I think it was Dave who suggested using it on another PC. Connected to SWMBO’s former old HP laptop, which only had VGA, and no joy. Tried a new VGA cable before that, no picture.

Still does not work in VGA, but HDMI works a treat in   1920 x 1280. Probably why it was bought for such a low price! :yahoo:

I never used the KVM switch again. Too many sensible alternatives, which involve less or no cabling. Another product whose time has come and gone. Another lump of outmoded tech in my BitsBoxes…. 😥

I have never used compatibles in my old HP Photosmart C5380, mainly because it’s a 5-cart Photo printer and I print photos for the family, friends and myself. Before anyone points out that I can use a High street printing service: I know, but I like the process of doing it myself. HP ‘Viera’ inks are so good, I have some pic’s which are quite old now, some in sunlight, and they are still sharp, no fading. I use the ‘XL’ high capacity inks and I have found that ordering direct from HP is no more expensive than anywhere else, with faster delivery than anyone else.

The only problem I can foresee, is that there does not appear to be another similar HP printer as good as the 5380 in their stable now, for the same sort of money. I am probably going to have to go to a more expensive model when the 5380 dies.

My son and grandson both use Epson. Grandson’s is dad’s old Epson, uses compatibles and always has, suits him and just keeps going. Dad’s is an XP 235 and he has the same problems with compat’s that you have, John. The problem with ALL printers, is caused by manufacturers selling printers at a loss, making up the deficit by installing cartridges of low capacity for first use. They run out very quickly and they tell you that you must use genuine inks or void the printer warranty. Then they recoup their losses by selling cartridges at inflated prices, knowing they have a captive market, at least until the warranty runs out. If you attempt to use the warranty, they will ask you to return the printer, then say they have tested the ink used and it is not theirs. Result –  your warranty is dead. :negative:

Ed, I am in complete agreement with this:

I would like protections in place for the possibility one day that the UK ‘goes bad’. in the same way as these Middle East states where their citizens fear a 2am knock on the door. If not for me then for my grand-children. This country has taken too many steps on the slippery path towards state control of the population for my liking. ”

That is exactly how I feel. UK citizens are the most closely supervised, watched and listened to, on the planet. When I say this to people, I get the same amused looks, sometimes a shake of the head and the facetious statement “If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.” UK citizens are sleepwalking into a Police State and the majority are doing it to themselves without a murmur of protest. What really worries me about this, is the fact that there is no real, working political opposition to the government in power, and therefore no chance of a change in government in the foreseeable future. I recall a very true quote, attributable to several people, including Edmund Burke: –

” The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. ”

                                          I'm out.

Take off side panel, disconnect each fan in turn, run briefly and see if there is silence after one particular fan is disconnected. Is the case positioned up from, close to, or on, the floor? Is there space for the expelled warm air to dissipate behind the case?

If that shows no results, I suggest you look for overheating issues, download and run this:     https://tinyurl.com/25xx66y    to check temperatures. If the CPU is overheating, it might be time for a heatsink, fan and cpu strip down, followed by a surface clean and some new thermal paste.
