Well our luck ran out today. The day began with sunshine, so SWMBO and I had to do a food shop, as the car is being serviced tomorrow and it may be all day. Pads all round, I think and the wind noise from the left (near) side has become horrendous over 50 mph. Think it might need new aperture seals, plus the bungs have fallen from the hatchback door and it drips water into the car when opened. And the mpg indicator is currently reading anywhere between zero and 999 mpg, changing every second.

We managed to get well away from the car in Louth when the heavens opened. Got the town stuff and also got absolutely drenched. So went home, had lunch and dried off before going back for the staples at Morrisons. I last saw rain like that in Sarawak I think, it just kept pouring down. The happiest guy I saw in Louth was just walking along, dressed in shorts, T-shirt and sandals. There are more characters in the town of Louth than anywhere else I believe.

The lowest part of Louth is by the River Lud and the long street that is Northgate was a river itself, over the kerbs. Ducks everywhere, as the Lud is topping out and that is where they live.

The Blackpool Stones show in ’64 was not a mods ‘n’ rockers thing Dan. It was a culmination of a few street battles between English and Glaswegian youths over several days. One of the lads we knew lost an eye when a Jock bottled him. I happened to be involved with a gorgeous blonde lass from Kilysth during the first of our two weeks holiday and had to really watch my step. The attic rooms of our B&B were inhabited by 9 of us Notts lads and 11 Scots lassies. What happens in Blackpool, stays in Blackpool….😍😉🤐 A situation like that, all young lads and lassies – was the landlord mad? That holiday is still talked about by we few “survivors” today.

Scarborough was also a mods ‘n ‘rockers battleground at times in the 60’s, but there were far too many rockers for the mods.

In the village we have been lucky, but I believe the lower part of Louth is in danger again, from the River Lud. We will not be moving there! Our next place is away from there, still a low area but well protected. And we can always move up a floor to No.1 grandson!

Lincoln is apparently flooding around Brayford Pool: usual problem, neglecting to dredge.

What about the Rover 100? Or, as originally known, the Metro? One of my customers was a driving instructor (taught our daughter) and had been experiencing a coolant leak. Rover could find nothing, so he bought another motor and left the 100 with me: “Just find it, fix it or scrap it!” – He had reached the end of his patience. Well, I found it – an alloy coolant pipe running across the bulkhead had a hairline crack, which I found by removing it, sealing one end, filling with water and sealing the other end. I didn’t just replace it, because I noticed the alloy pipe was contacting the bulkhead and vibration from that had caused the crack.

I made a suitable neoprene pad and fixed it to the pipe. The instructor wrote a nasty letter to Rover and gave me a handsome tip, after which I received a visit from a Rover Suit: “How did I fix it?” That will cost my time and my time is money here, I said. Exit Suit, stage left. No surprise to me when Rover went TU.

Joke, Ed! This year Mick & Keith are 75, Charlie 78, Ronnie Wood 71. Combined ages 299.

Take another look at them though, it is possible, wrinkly old buggas look older than me, although I am almost the same age as Mick and Keith! I may have been at the same gig, I was following them in ’62 with my mate, who met a London lass, which gave us a chair each to kip on.

I remember Ian Stewart on piano, and of course Brian Jones and Bill Wyman. Mick, Keith, Charlie and Brian I first saw in Blues Incorporated, at The Marquee or a college, memory is a bit hazy. Saw them next as The Rollin’ Stones, as christened by Brian Jones, at the Crawdaddy Club. What a sweaty cesspit that became!

My mate Alan married the London lass and her mate had designs upon my future, so by ’64 I was in the Army. That was the year I went for my last holiday as a civilian, to Blackpool with 8 mates from the village. The Stones came to the Winter Gardens and a riot broke out between Glasgow lads on one side and Nottinghamshire, Sheffield and Geordie lads on the other. We didn’t stay after the police sirens were heard, but broke through into the arcades next door, shoved machines up against the door and waited until it all died down, then back to the B&B at sunrise. Bedlam and mayhem! Yet another place that banned the Stones at the time.

                BL, gave me a laugh!

I’ve been called lots of things in my life, but BL is a new one!!😋

Sorry JayCeeDee, I was still somewhat under the influence. I have only a vague recollection of driving the 35 miles back from Boston. I do my best driving at those times.

                Maybe.

Gockers? Reeks? Here are four more almost relevant opinions:

They do look well for a combined age of > 1,000 though! Think Charlie has been embalmed…

This morning the lady across the street had a visit from workmen replacing ridge tiles on her roof, blown off last night. It would be this lady, she is almost immobile and doesn’t get out unless one of us takes her. We take turns to give her a break, which is what we have all done over the years. We will miss that spirit, but some of the latest incomers do not share it. This lady is very cheerful in all her problems, always smiling. She takes our parcels if we are out, so I made her a sign that says “PLEASE RING AND WAIT: takes me time to get to the door!” She always checks ID before opening the door.

Every now and again we buy her fruit or flowers.

                      Thanks Guys.

Stevie P, all the best of luck in your present situation. I well remember having ‘bird baths’ whilst hooked up with two sets of drips and associated dangling pipes, cables and stuff. I never did find out what some of it did. That was late ’18 and early ’19 during two after-treatment infections. They sent the first bug samples away, but I never found what it was, perhaps better off not knowing, lol. Second bug was apparently pretty common and they did not isolate me like the first. I feel for you, keep fighting.

BL, gave me a laugh! No change of gender here, just had a quick look and it’s all still there. 😫😑😊 Although going to the loo has been a painful experience since yesterday. As in, peeing iron filings, until the last of the gel makes its way out. How come it has an anaesthetic effect on the way in, but the opposite on the way out? Gritting my teeth a lot.

Graham I was isolated with the same arrangements during the first infection. Nice wet room, everything ensuite. That was Grimsby and I will never hear a word against the place. Food was good, staff all caring and mostly happy, same as all the other stays I have had in that hotel.

Many thanks to all of you, never fail to cheer me up.

That’s bad news for Lincolnshire Graham, as most of the East Midlands runoff drains through Lincs to the sea. Probably why the Land Drainage Board has been so busy in the last few months. Diking and ditching has gone deep, but the main dykes are all perilously full. I am waiting for the current bad stuff to stop (if ever!) and will go on one of my County Drives to check out what I can.

A large, undoctored Tomcat is useful in those situations. Or an aggressive little Jack Russel, which has left from next door now my neighbour has fallen from his perch. Yet another old buddy gone. Soon we will be off to live where the neighbours do not perish at such a great rate.

Sorry for all those here and elsewhere in the UK with flooding and all other weather problems. All we have had is wind and rain, just one day of Tropical downpours and the rest is steadily falling. Worst I experienced was having to chase mine and neighbour’s wheely bin down the Close at daft 0’clock in the am, with Ceira blowing me after them. Dressed in PJ’s and a dressing gown, neither of which were waterproof. Bins have lived against the house walls since, just released them again to be emptied tomorrow at some other unholy hour.

Plenty of frogs in the garden though, and an increase in the spider count lately. Escaping frogs and rain, no doubt.

John, If they fitted both sides at the first job, and the car rode higher, it may be that the wrong springs were used. That would have been spotted at the second work and they would have been very embarrassed about it. Someone may well have had a spanner inserted in the incorrect orifice, I think. It’s all in checking the correct part numbers with the right VIN and engine numbers, before ordering.

If that was the case, and incorrect parts were used, it explains why you received no charge for the second job. As a foreman, if that happened in my workshop*, the car should (ideally) never have left the garage before being spotted and corrected. And I would have been annoyed. Very annoyed. Still, at least they put it right.

*Similar stuff happened over the years I worked in the Trade.

Probably something as simple as a linkage or a bush loose. Did you see the gearbox actually off the car up in the ramp, John? If it was a problem inside the box, say a selector, it would have been expensive. If you had a receipt/invoice, I would be interested in what it said. Not nosy, but it might help someone else here in the future and isn’t that how Forumite rolls?

                                    Glad you got sorted though.

Ed that is very much in line with my own thinking.

UK has an ageing population and the problem appears to be exponential.

There is a shortfall in funding for adult Social Care, specifically for those of us in retirement.

There are so many issues, medical and ageing, that funding support for the elderly has become a large drain upon government finances and consequently, the taxpayer. Government has been reducing funding for this to Councils for years.

A disease that appears to have a proportionately more significant effect upon the elderly, might be seen as “useful” in reducing this expenditure.

I do not however, imagine that the semi-conscious inhabitants of the House of Lords would support this point of view.

Could very well be an AC issue John. Follow the actions in Graham’s link (WoFire) and see what happens. Might be compressor or a bearing in the end drive, where it drives the pulley.

It’s a good idea to use the aircon occasionally. It won’t use that much fuel, but the catch with mechanical stuff is that if you don’t use it, it can cause problems. If you have to regass, shop around first. Places that carry this out vary wildly in price, I find.
