Well the girls got through to the quarter finals against Portugal, 2-1. Hard luck on Scotland, who battled hard to beat Spain by 1-0, but couldn’t find the second goal which would have taken them through. Clare Balding and Jermaine Jennas were talking to scouse goalscorer Toni Duggan at the end of the match. The interviewers could have done with an interpreter – Steve?

Luckily I once had a gf in L14 and a mate from Bootle, but SWMBO was baffled. I started to explain the footy terms to her, but her eyes glazed over. As usual..

I run Total Security 2017 and upgrade every year with a download which is always at a ‘reasonable’ price. (That’s code for ‘cba to look up what I paid last upgrade’)

There are many added features in the paid-for version, but for most regular users (not from this outpost of Geek Central!) the Free version looks fine. There are some voices in the USA making Trump – eting noises about a Russian – based AV installed on American PC’s and servers, but that fails to address the fact that (a) paid versions are already on millions of American machines and PC’s anyway and (b) it is one of the most popular and efficient AV’s in use worldwide. A conspiracy is everywhere nowadays in some places. The slightest proven whiff of any AV supplier’s hacking activities, would kill that company stone dead.

The Trump – eters also fail to recognise that Kaspersky Labs is based in the USA:     https://usa.kaspersky.com/

Daniel Levy, the Spurs’ chairman, is a very business-oriented guy. His view of the ridiculous spending by some top Premier Laegue clubs is one I agree with:     https://tinyurl.com/y86ctmnr

Spurs are building their new stadium this coming season and will play their home games at Wembley until it’s ready. The new stadium will be purpose-built to be an entertainment centre, as well as a sports venue, from concerts to other sports including American football. US ‘football’ is something I detest, but it is growing in popularity and Levy wants a big slice of the pie. The future of British football is not going to be supported by continually paying silly money for players IMO, but by club owners who see the value of investing in the future.

          http://new-stadium.tottenhamhotspur.com/

Retail, conferences, cafes, a hotel: if it all comes off OK, it will be a moneyspinner for the club. I think Levy is creating something that doesn’t just need football to make money and finance buying players. Time will tell, I guess.

Yes I remember Grobelaar, Zimbabwe guy and I remember some of the saves I wish he had not made against Forest! The Trent End loved him, he was real entertainment. Once did a cartwheel along the goal-line after the Trent – enders applauded a fantastic save. A nutter, but the kind of player that football does not have many of today.

Shilton was a great goalie, but a boring bloke, appeared to have no personality when I met him at an old players do. Fortunately Robbo ” (John Robertson) was there to entertain us. Strangely, Robbo and Shilts were best mates, still are today. They always roomed together, I think Shilts was quiet because he couldn’t get a word in!

I remember taking a mate who was a Mansfield Town supporter to a Forest game one Saturday. He couldn’t understand why we were not applauding the saves Shilton made. “That’s because he does it every week, it gets boring.” He became a Forest supporter, still buys a season ticket.

I hope we have a better time this season. Seems that the management are relying on the Academy kids and a few signings now. A lot of money gone into the club from the new Greek billionaire owner, most being spent on the Academy. We just sold our top scorer from last season – Britt Assombalonga – to Middlesborough – for £15 million. Wait until they find out how injury-prone he is! He scored 14 last season and only played half a season.

You’re not the only ones needing to keep the winners around, but I have a feeling that Liverpool are going to win something this season. That should probably put the mockers on it, my forecasts are always wrong! But they do play football I like to watch, just be better if they could defend.

“Chicken Run” is one of the few films that SWMBO and I love, we both watch it again a few times and it’s still funny, which is the test of a really good film IMO. But they should have found someone else other than Mel Gibson to be the Hero.

Steve your best Centre back was Larry Lloyd and Forest nicked him after he got bored at Coventry. Next thing he knew, he was holding the Euro Cup. Twice!

Larry is still commentating for Radio Nottingham and BBCTV East Midlands. I have his biography which he signed for me, along with most of the 70’s and 80’s teams who won so much. Met him several times, he is a proper Bristolian lad, every time I see him again he seems to have put on another couple of stone. Massive guy now. I was once on holiday at Ilfracombe and coming off the beach at sunset, when a huge bloke loomed out of the dusk with a nipper on each shoulder. That was the first time I met the guy, had a drink with him later. What a character he is, his book is really interesting.

BT have a big exchange and base for the engineers and vehicles in Louth. They took ages to get “Superfast” cabled up in the town and have fought for years against Virgin coming into the mix. It was suspected for years that the Town Council was hand-in-glove with that, but ther has been a minor revolution there, as all the Oldpharts on the Council have been replaced. Virgin have been given an unbelievably short set time period to cable up the town. This has rebounded on the Council, as Virgin are using at least 3 local construction companies to get it done. According to a Virgin engineer I spoke to outside my gson’s flat, they are well ahead of schedule.

Now, this has affected my vote about moving out of this village that I love so much! Thought we had a nice, new build flat in Louth, with garage, set up, but it has gone.

97 yo Dunkirk veteran reviews the film here:

This man’s words are moving and lend credence to the film, as well as pointing out the utter stupidity of war. I haven’t seen it yet – my last visit to a cinema was at Mablethorpe, taking (now 12 yo) granddaughter to see “Despicable Me3”. This Oldphart confesses to being a Minions fan, I actually have “2” on my Q Box and have seen it twice in company with said gdaughter, both cackling with laughter, SWMBO making disapproving noises from the kitchen. “3” is nowhere near as good, whereas “2” had me in stitches, “3” just raised the occasional laugh. Another overdone sequel: at least we can’t have a “Dunkirk 2”. Can we?

I was also disappointed with the cinema, which I have not visited for some time. It now looks tawdry and ill-used. Louth cinema is OK, but I think I will watch “Dunkirk” at Cleethorpes Parkway, which is much larger and has more comfortable seats.

Complaint: SWMBO was asked to allow lifesize Minions stickers on the lounge window. The suggestion was not met with wholehearted agreement. ?? Anyway my chief ally and partner in crime (gdaughter) has just gone to Spain for 2 weeks with mum and dad, I can’t get the votes!

My dad used to go to what was Miner’s Convalescent Home in Pegwell Bay, which is good distance north-east of Hastings of course.

Pegwell Bay is about 10 minutes down the road from me. It’s a lovely part of the County. There’s a Country Park, beaches and great dog walks. It’s also home to the old Ramsgate Hovercraft Terminal, now unfortunately a derelict area of disused Car Parks, staging areas and concrete pads and ramps. Great shame.

Glad my dad never saw it like that, JayCee. He would have been terribly disappointed. Why are derelict sites like that, left so long to decay and destroy the potential of places, in this country?

Getting silly now! My old boss’ son had a Fiat 131 Mirafiori and turned it into a rally car. Basic body was this:

Rally car was something like this:

He took my mate and me to Gatwick for a holiday in Canada in it, rally spec and all. Frightened my mate to death on the M1, door on his side flew open at well over 100.

Hastings is one of the few places I have never been on the UK coast BL. My dad used to go to what was Miner’s Convalescent Home in Pegwell Bay, which is  good distance north-east of Hastings of course. I learned a few years after he retired, that he could have taken my mam with him on those 2-week convalescences. However, in his Potteries words ” ‘Er never asked an’ I never volunteered!” Crafty old so-and-so, my dad was.

Dad loved that place, he told me that he used to have conversations with Kent farmers and apple-growers about the relative prices of Kent apples and Nottinghamshire coal. They decided a barter system would be great, with dad setting up a fruit stall on Mansfield market: apples up to Notts, lorry loads of coal back to Kent! He always wanted to be a farmer, dad hated every minute he worked underground, from 14 in 1918, to 65 in 1969.

That’s a great story, about the Lifeboat. I used to do some voluntary work for funding the RNLI, a great organisation.

I have to see this. I was a bit disappointed at the original B&W british film years ago. One of my two uncles in the RN had his first ship almost blown out from under him there, limped back to Pompey listing and crowded with troops. He said that there was fighting on deck between British and French soldiers. The French blamed the Brits for leaving them in the lurch, some French Poilus were thrown over the side, never reported of course, how could it have been?

Maternal Uncle Bob (I am named after him, mam’s family was 2 girls, 7 boys) was very unlucky. Got leave, his ship was scrapped, got another, was torpedoed. Joined another one for the Russian convoys, was bombed but lucky (!) to be picked up before freezing in the Arctic Ocean. Something happened on that one which earned him a medal. Returned to the UK, joined yet another ship on a Malta convoy, bombed again. Something else happened on that Malta Run to earn another medal. He would never talk about either of those, or show his medals, would not talk much about the Arctic or the Malta convoys, other than to say that a lot of mates were killed and injured. He was badly wounded in the Malta attacks, when he came out of hospital it was early 1942 and the USA had been bombed into a reaction. he was sent on a tour of America to help recruiting: unc was a slim, redheaded, good-looking guy and based in Charleston, Virginia. He did talk about that – said it was the best part of his service, had to beat off the US women with a stick and had better food than he had ever eaten in his life. ? He was demobbed after 12 months in the USA, tried to get back into the Wolves’ team that he had just joined as a centre-half before the war but was judged to be too old.

After the war he married an Irish lass from Belfast that he met whilst in the Andrew. More bad luck was that she could never be a mother, they asked to adopt me when I was having problems as a kid, but dad would not hear of it. Uncle Bob died in 1979, he had been head of all Traffic wardens in Stoke. His funeral was attended by hundreds, including an Honour Guard of Police Officers and Wardens. He left me his gold watch, which some barsteward nicked from my coat when I was playing snooker. The bad luck extended to his watch, even! He would have laughed at that, uncle Bob took nothing seriously. After a life like that, who could blame him?

I come from a long line  of funny people on both sides.

Sorry Jason, I respect your POV and your musical tastes, but I love BluesRock and the Stones never had the need to push boundaries. They are still blasting out concerts today (poor suffering old buggas) and they picked up the Blues and ran with it. They honoured the music that they began with, and have always tried to include tracks by the black Blues guys that they  almost worshipped, and followed. Check out what Rolling Stone magazine has to say:

                                    https://tinyurl.com/yb9dtt4w

I won’t argue that the Beatles were innovative and made music that no one else could, but I never really took to them, it was always the Stones for me and their music is just as raw, rockin’ and Bluesy as it was when I first heard them in 1962. Especially after the release of “Blue And Lonesome.” A lot of their own hits begin with instantly recognisable riffs. Listen to the start of “The Last Time ” for example – brilliant, even if Brian Jones died later, successive leads still play that same riff in concert.

Last comment from me: 55 years since they blew me away at the Marquee. Fifty-Five Years. World’s Greatest Rock’n’Roll Band.

I’m used to FF, it does what I want and works fine with Google. I think it gets a bad rep from people who just get too may Addons and Plugins they don’t need. That slows it down, and most of them are irrelevant to most user’s needs. I have just 7 Addons & 3 Plugins, all do something useful and/or necessary. Every time I added something from an independent dev, if it worked and I kept it, I donated.

I was just about to say Bob, you can sign into Google straight from the browser, but then I noticed you use Firefox.

Yes Steve, set my Homepage in Firefox to    google.co.uk.   Google & Firefox are both synced on all devices. Thanks mainly to the advice from you and other Forumites, (and MM) I learned a lot. You’re never too old to learn!

Good point Steve, I actually read that in the Link and it rang no bells, thanks for the reminder. Think I’ll look up a new SP.

Haven’t used CCleaner for years Jason, as I do my own PC “Housework”. But I know plenty of people who do use it and rely on it. I don’t think I will mention this around here, if one of them calls for help I can truly plead ignorance. Hope Avast doesn’t mess around with it. AFAIK it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Well done to the CC team though, hope they go on to bigger and better things.
