The description of “spearphishing” points to something that happened to me, and continues to happen occasionally. Three years ago this next Christmas, I lost a friend from childhood who was closer to me than my brothers. He had left for life in Australia at 22, but we continued to stay in contact off and on. He visited us every year in the summer. He died of his second bout of cancer on Christmas Day back home in Oz and I miss him to this day, as does SWMBO, who gave him the fitting description as “The most perfect gentleman (she) ever met”*.

I had been warning him about lax security on his laptop and phone for a while, but not until after his death did this affect me. It was my contact with the Australian newspaper that brought it about: I began to receive emails with his name on them. You can imagine how angry I am about this, how frustrated that I can do nothing to the scumbags who do this. I discovered, via my mate’s family, that there had been a security breach at the paper and they had also been receiving similar emails. The effect of this upon a loving family was heartbreaking to read.

I block these messages of course and so does his family, but I often wonder if the originators could read about the effects of their evil work. Do they have families? Do they give a s***? Probably not. Every time his family or I see another such message, we are affected by the same misery we felt when he died so painfully.

      Unintended (?) consequences.

*SWMBO is correct, I don’t have an issue with that. He was much more of a gentleman, all his life, than I ever was.

Haven’t seen the highlights on MotD yet, but I have an old mate back in Notts who has been a Liverpool supporter since the early Shankly days. Not a scouse, just decided he liked Liverpool instead of the first team his dad took him to as a nipper – Mansfield Town – can’t blame him for giving them up, lol. He went to the game yesterday, goes to a lot, had a season card for about 60 years now. Pete says that he thinks they should employ referees like that with a white stick and their Guide Dogs, ? never a penalty. He remembers players like St. John and Callaghan, but says that they could have done with defenders like Ron Yeats and Ronnie Moran yesterday.

I saw a lot of Liverpool in Forest’s best years, as we were head to head with them in Europe and the League for a few years. I thought that the pairing of Hansen and Lawrenson was one of the best CB combinations I ever saw, although we often wished that they played for someone else at the time, preferably separately, for different clubs! Almost as good as Larry Lloyd and Kenny Burns for Forest at the time in fact.??

Problem in English football, is that there are just not enough good defenders about today. I don’t think enough emphasis is given by coaches to proper defending. I was am amateur Army right back, but I could tackle better than some of the players I see in that position nowadays. My Uncle Bob played as understudy to Stan Cullis before the War at Wolves and was scouted as a kid to eventually replace him at centre-half. Being sunk twice and wounded meant that he only played non-League after 1945, but he showed me how to make a clean tackle from the age of 9. Also to take a ball on the chest, run it down to feet, one touch to control, then pass. No heading it anywhere, as even England players do. SWMBO says the most she hears from this room when I watch football, is “Don’t just head it anywhere – control it and pass it!” I get emotional at football… ?

Good job taking out the clay Spedley: in my last abode (Louth town) a developer built houses by putting in another street off the main road, between our street and another. The area he built upon, was higher than the existing two streets, developer took off the top layer of soil, down to clay, just concreted and slabbed the tiny new “gardens”. Gardens of our street and the other one affected, became permanently wet ground, due to runoff from the new street, which had no soil depth to soak it up. They also blocked a Land Drain which had been there quietly doing its job since Edwardian days. After we left, the developer was taken to court and ordered to build Land Drains in both of the older streets. Cost must have been astronomical, more than 80 houses involved. The developer was taken over by Keir very soon after that.

Good point Ryan: one of my neighbours changed supplier 3 times in the last 5 years, while I have been with EDF. I check EDF tariffs regularly and when they make a better offer I take a close look and usually change, but stay with them. Their CS and website are so good that I would not like to leave. While my neighbours start off with a lower tariff than me, within a couple of months it goes up. Happens every time, the husband gets annoyed, stays angry and changes after a year, sometimes sooner. He always winds up paying more than me and cannot understand how it happens. I got tired of telling him, you cannot educate the ones who refuse to learn.

All the meters in 6 bungalows on our side are the same, all changed when the landlord had GCH fitted in March 2015. Switching is OK for some, I prefer to stay with a good company and develop a good consumer relationship. If that ever changes, I’m off.

EDIT: just realised we’ve gone from car buying to electric meters: where to next? ?

Yes Steve, thought things were looking up after a good pre season and a couple of good results. Typical, that sinking “Here we go again!” feeling, every season after the first few games it goes TU for us.

One for BlackLion: just reading Harry Redknapp senior’s book “Harry” a couple of years old, but some cracking stories in there. He is very generous in praise of Liverpool, Steve. Loved Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes and others. Liked having Stuart Pearce at WHU, even when our Psycho was 37.

Personally, I prefer an 8″ tablet, easier to handle. My grandson’s mate has just had a Shield for birthday and gson says it’s ‘cool-brill‘ which I believe means pretty good. Looking at the specs, if I had a need for a tablet that does it all in the best way, that’s what I would go for. It makes my Lenovo look last decade.

Oh dear Steve, you have my sympathy. Now you scousers have a SECOND unfavourite team in Mancland.

My sympathy is serious: Forest play Sheff Wed at 5:30, we have had some hard times there, including a certain horrible, tragic FA Cup Semi. A lot of older Forest supporters will not go there still.

Well I watched the last Episode 7 of GoT last night, having recorded all 7 and watched 2 per night, saved 7 for last night. The ending was a glaringly obvious attempt to keep us on tenterhooks until the next Series, probably next year. That has completely p****d me off and is the final nail in the coffin for me, of a greedy broadcaster and media company which sucks the last penny out of customers for the least effort. I forecast a fall in quality of GoT for the next Series. Completely agree with Dave, there is very little left that is not on Freesat for us. A new setup for me soon.

I will record and watch all of “Tin Star” which looks OK from a distance: if it does not live up to expectations and/or I cannot record all in time, I’m off. I want to return to TV that I can record and keep for future viewing at my own leisure in my own time. I have no need of recording more than 2 programmes while watching another: they are having a laugh, most of it is dross, pure and simple.

The suppliers say that the meters will make consumers more conscious of what they use and adjust their usage accordingly. Once again, it’s up to the customer to do the work. Screw that: if we are cold, I put the heating on. If I need to see what I am doing, I put the light on. I use computers whenever I want and I charge devices when they need it. (All of this is a battle between myself and my dear SWMBO, who turns down a thermostat and then complains that the rads are cold.)

I carry out regular meter reads and I keep an eye on bills. I am at the stage of life when I refuse to worry about something as daft as energy use.

The information regarding poor WiFi from the Sky Q box, rings a very loud bell for me. Mine is krap: drops out, works at 72Mbps with my Wileyfox, 65 with SWMBO’s, 54 with the Lenovo Tab3-8. Now and again the Tab3 and SWMBO’s Wfox swop signal strength and this is not limited to location. I asked the Sky ‘engineer’ at initial installation if I could use ethernet and Dave’s information concerning Sky fitters is obviously correct: quote from my own experience – “The Q Box is meant to work best with WiFi, from the Sky Hub.” That was absolute rowlocks, of course and I tried to argue the case, until I discovered that ther are only 2 LAN ports. Yet another reason to chuck Sky in a couple of weeks. ‘Engineer’ my a**e!

I am going back to Plusnet as an ISP, digging out my previous TP-Link 9980 VDSL router/modem. Getting a Humax box, also have a NOWTV box. Never again will I repeat the Sky experience.

After I watch the last episode 7 of “GoT” tonight, then binge-watch “Tin Star” if it’s any good: currently recording each episode. NOWTV should get me the next box set of “Westworld”. I found the first series of that weird at first, then amazingly good. Anthony Hopkins almost in Hannibal mode again. And yes, I’m rambling again…

This is from your other Thread Steve:

Ever used the MSE forum Steve?     http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

Make up a user name & password, check out “Energy” and look for Smart meter Threads, there are a lot.

My own refusal to let EDF fit a Smartmeter, is based upon the absolutely incompetent way that government have gone about it.

*Planning is non-existent. As usual in the UK, there has been no single government initiative to ensure it goes smoothly. Every Westminster department that could have a finger in the pie, adds to the chaos.

*There are several different meters. If you switch energy suppliers, your smartmeter will probably not work with the next supplier.

*Training has been hit and miss. There are press stories about some new, half-trained fitters causing meters to break down, fitting wrong meters, incorrect wiring, even some fires.

*The programme as ‘planned’ by government, has a projected budget of  £11 Billion. This is expected to at least double.

*ALL energy users in the UK will pay for this by rising costs in their energy bills.

*I read my own meter every 2 months (every month in winter) and send readings via the excellent EDF website. I get a new bill within 24 hours, if I have paid too much they reduce my DD: too little and they increase it. The amount has not moved since last December. What is wrong with that system? Nothing. Takes me 15 minutes at the most, to read gas and leccy, then send readings. Simples!

*I had brand new meters fitted 2 years ago.

I told EDF “thanks, but no thanks” – It is not compulsory. *Some of the usual scumbags have been out doorknocking and convincing people that it IS compulsory.

Can’t find any near me, two comments locally:

I have just emailed East Lindsey Council who cover Skegness and most of the East Coast and to see wether or not they are installing EV chargers in the future and they said they weren’t due to being low demand for such things.

I know for sure a lot of EV drivers will go to the east coast if they could Rapid or slow charge throughout the day! If you all wouldn’t mind sending an email to the council to request such chargers to be installed it would help the EV community greatly and hopefully get some action going on the eastern front!

                            And…

Lincolnshire is spectacularly bad for rapid charge stations. Gonerby Hill Foot (almost Nottinghamshire) on the A1 has two courtesy of Ecotricity, there is a broken one at Trenton Nissan, Tetney 71 miles away and that’s all folks. Not good for any county, but when you’re the second largest county in England its… well its embarrassing. Skeggy isn’t going to get one when Lincoln hasn’t any. ”

Our ELDCouncil is spectacularly slow to emerge into the 20th century, never mind the 21st. If agricultural machinery were EV’s, there would be charging points everywhere. We are bottom of the heap for everything: roads, transport, health, you name it.

That’s right JCD, nothing will happen all at once. Atm, every time some manufacturer comes out with a new electric vehicle, or a project for one, the same nay – sayers moan “No infrastructure!” Of course there isn’t the infrastucture yet, but this is an idea whose time is rapidly approaching and the infrastucture will be built. Probably later in the UK than almost everywhere else, but it will have to happen.

Incidentally, as a rather loose connection. The Texas and Carribean hurricanes and the tremendous, horrific amount of damage, loss of life, huge rebuilding cost and homelessness, may finally convince The Trumper that Global Warming is man-made and is real.

And that the increase in the size, force and number of seriously bad weather effects across the world (including hurricanes) is down to man-made Global Warming.

Or maybe nothing will convince him, until the White House is underwater.

As a Nottingham-born lad, I would have taken exception to anyone else saying that, Ed! Wollaton has always been a renowned visitor attraction in the area, nice to know its appeal has widened.

Many Nottinghamshire schools (mine included) used to take pupils on History trips there, when I was a nipper. I had no idea that it now puts on such great exhibitions nowadays. I am tempted to take my history-fanatic* 12yo gdaughter there. Thanks for the tip, Ed, you are forgiven even if it was the wrong county in so many ways!

*Seriously: she absolutely loves history, we spend hours along local beaches, picking up Flint knappings and tools, dragged up from the beach renourishment work along our coast. More hours in local ancient Houses, of which there are many. And she has loved dinosaurs since she was tiny.

All that just to grow some spuds and a few beans…?

Incidentally, try using one of those day after day, week in, week out, for a working lifetime. All ex-digger drivers have bad backs. My sadly deceased nephew was a miner for many years. When the pit closed, he took redundancy but wanted to carry on working, so went on a British-Coal sponsored course, worked a year using a digger on big sites. Increased his redundancy investments, bought a pub with the total. Vowed never to get on a digger again!

The pub actually turned out to be a very good buy: Tesco wanted the site and bought it, gave him a 250% profit. The very great pity was that cancer prevented him enjoying it, but his widow has a beautiful house and a great lifestyle. His daughter and 3 stepsons declare that they would rather have dad back.

Happy Birthday Dwynne! Bob, when I played mini rugby for a Penarth side we were unbeaten one year, one of the reasons was the hooker. 9 stone at 8 1/2. Took some shoving to get him moving but when he was going nothing would stop him. Apart from distance. I was usually full back, I’d just keep running back and forth until the other side got tired. Easy to get a try then.

Nolan, when I damaged my knee playing Army football, I had a go at the oval ball, was told to play hooker and they called me “B*****k Biter Williams” after an unsavoury incident against an equally useless RAF team. ? We were not a serious team, I really had no clue what I was doing, but managed to get a few good games against some of the few German teams. The best times were against the Hamburg Polizei, which made for some really interesting outings, as their station was in St. Pauli, in the centre of the Red Light district. ?? Their team had the biggest German I ever saw, no kidding in fact the biggest human I ever saw. They called him Baby and he could walk between the posts with several opposing players still attached to him! They always gave us a great time, including massive meals and loads of booze. I expressed a liking for sauerkraut, which was mistake, as they would heap my plate with it. Never ate it again after leaving Germany. ??
