There was a whole 8-player band in a passageway between shops for a few weeks, but I think the foreign gentlemen involved, realised they were not making enough to go round. Haven’t seen them for a while.

They were probably saving up for the train fare to London!!!

No, JayCeeDee – Birmingham: they will feel right at home! Louth is defo NOT cosmopolitan.

I don’t know why we don’t go with Pickford now as 1st choice keeper, gets better all the time. Which is the exact reverse of Hart, who is going backwards IMO. Plus Pickford would have his Everton centre back in front of him. Notice you have not made a prediction Lee, it’s 1-1 for me.

Thought we were getting a football lesson at times though, but there is a lot of potential in this England team. They are learning all the time. Standout England player: Stones. Standout Brazilian: Marcello. It’s a good, fast game, enjoying it so far.

          Nice One Lee, FAF!

We have buskers in Louth market place every market day. There was a whole 8-player band in a passageway between shops for a few weeks, but I think the foreign gentlemen involved, realised they were not making enough to go round. Haven’t seen them for a while.

Some years ago there was a bunch of guys in South American dress playing Pan Pipes, everyone wondered how Peruvians got to Louth. Every time some passerby dropped a coin in the bowl, they got a “Gracias Senor/Senora!” Then someone spotted that 2 of them were from up the road in Grimsby. Have not seen them since either.

My Wileyfox Swift and SWMBO’s Spark were both upgraded to 7.1.2 by WF directly, as part of the enforced change from Cyanogen Mod. We are both on EE PAYG. SWMBO’s Spark took another 3 months after mine, but got there after the first upgrade broke it. We RMA’d it, it came back with a bigger battery and thicker case (bonus!). I installed an SD card and set that to Internal Storage.

SWMBO seems happy with it, although it is often difficult to tell, if you know what I mean ….

I have a number of signed autobiographies of Forest players, mostly the Euro cup winners, but “Psycho: Stuart Pearce – the Autobiography“, is one I can read again and again. I recommend the book, it’s a true reflection of the man and the player. From his days playing for a local Sunday team as a Russian goalkeeper (it’s true, you have to read it!) to the end of a long career, his humour and combative spirit shines through.

One sentence in the book sums him up – “Some say that I would kick my own brother if it meant winning – they were right.” He also played one match when his brother was running the line, and took every opportunity to slag him off and insult him.

Pyscho is a one-off, a unique character. We loved the guy at the City Ground, even a management failure does not stop fans greeting him warmly whenever he visits the area.

Great spot Nolan, I really like those images, but the imagination goes farther than just the images: the medium they are drawn upon and the way they are distributed, is intriguing and amusing.

…hand drawn with Biro, the forgotten craft

                  Cracks me up!

I have had a Wileyfox (original) Swift over 18 months now and am happy with it. Since Wf gave up the busted Cyanogen Mod and went straight Android path, it’s been fine. The Swift 2 Plus, which is the one I would take, is £189 direct from Wf:     http://tinyurl.com/y94ln2jp

-but if you wait for Black Friday, Wf always have deals via Amazon: that’s how I got my Swift, at £19.99 less than RRP at the time. Never heard of a Blue Vivo, must be a Chi-phone. The Swift 2+ is better in all departments.

Looking at that Boris, if it is doing a Proper Job, it represents an attraction to 10 for me, which has not happened before.

Question is, is it any good? Does it do a Proper Job, will it save me buying another IS/AV programme? As you say, it is easily closed.

Got to agree about Stan Boardman, gives Liverpool a bad name “Dey bombed our chip shop!” I never heard a Scouser talk like that, and I knew a good few, even had a Liverpool GF once upon a time, lived there on a few Leave periods. One of my Army mates was a Brian Scully, great lad but he was a Blue Steve. Also hated the Harry Enfield ‘Scousers in the Pub’ shows.

I have a lot of German friends, still in regular contact with my best mate when over there. Rolf says that his generation does not mind the p*** taking from England fans, and give it back, but the latest generation are sick and tired of it. At least 3 generations since the War, they are beginning to ask, why do we have to continue to feel guilty about something that ended 50 years before we were born? I can understand that.

SWMBO and I were talking about this after the Rememberance Silence. We decided that the majority of Brits are the most xenophobic people in the world. (after most Americans!) You can see it on FB every day, some tinpot bunch with anti-foreign rants, supported and “liked” by loads of others. We also look back too much, to those days when most of the planet was pink on the maps. As a nation, we cannot face the fact that we are not what we were and we have to find another way. The problem is that we do not have any leaders to show us that way. I am as guilty as anyone else, in that I read a lot of history, especially British Armed Forces history.

Services charities are among the worst, Steve. Jobs for the boys, as I found out when picked as a Corporal to sit in a meeting of the REME Benevolent Fund. A retired Colonel (dead ringer for Col. Blimp!) was president and members consisted of a W.O.1, 2 Staff Sergeants and myself. Several cases of hardship amongst retired personnel were read out and I agreed with all votes until the last one. This is how it worked: they took cases 2 by 2, comparing one aginst the other. The last 2 cases concerned an ex- Lance Corporal driver who had become disabled and out of work, with a family of 4 children to support, and an ex-Major. The ex-major had massive gambling debts and had lost wife, kids and home. There were medical reports that nailed him as an alcoholic. Guess who got the help? I made a protest, was shouted down, but demanded that my terms of protest were recorded. They pulled rank, upon which I reminded Col. Blimp that he had stated at his opening address, that there was no rank amongst the Committee in terms of decision making, and everyone had an equal voice. The decision stood and the alkie Major got his money, but they could not avoid giving me a true record of the proceedings. I used them in a protest letter to the Defence Minister and it was reversed. My own C.O., a Technical officer and also a Colonel, took me aside later and told me that I was marked down as an “Agitator”. MOD BS. Corporal Bob the barrack room lawyer, apprently.

When I eventually became disabled and out of work, I applied for help from the REME BF. I got zilch, (unsurprisingly) but I did get an Army pension after a long fight, which made a great difference to the lives of our Gert and myself.

Charity begins at home, my old dad used to say…

Help the Aged and Motability kept bugging me to take out Home Contents with them. I knew it was just RSA in disguise for both, so I played along. Asked them both for a quote, both asked me who I was with currently and what was I paying. Not telling you, I said, this is the cover I want: give us a quote. HtA were more expensive and Motability were more expensive than my current deal, straight from RSA. Told them both – you are proposing to sell me the cover I am getting now, for a higher price than I am paying for it directly from the same insurer. Sorry, but I am not that dumb!

Don’t you want to Help the Aged by taking our sponsored product, they said. I am aged, I said and I help myself by not paying too much for my necessities. To Motability I answered a similar question by stating that I sell raffle tickets for them and I donate my Shell Driver’s Club points to them. I also have small monthly DD’s supporting McMillan Nurses and NSPCC and I sponsor a Guide Dog in training. How many in your offices are as charitable as that?

Today I received yet another Charity collection bag through the letterbox. They target our Close because they think all of us in the Senior Ghetto are soft in the head. I have two that I give stuff to: Cancer Research and the BHF. I have counted 5 separate, different cancer charity bags in one week here, it’s ridiculous, how many old clothes and books do they think we have?

The scratch team did very well I thought. Lots of attacking ideas, lots of possession and a good defence, could have scored at least two, Jessie Lingard missing a sitter in front of goal. Some of the ‘injured regulars’ ought to be looking over their shoulders. They more than matched the world champions.

Nice to see the Under 17’s presented with their trophy.

There is a German word which applies to the worst of England fans when we play the Germans: “schadenfreude” Closest meaning is ‘Evil joy’ or, more aptly, ‘malicious joy’. German players are unfailingly gracious when they beat us, but on the rare occasions when we win, usually in friendlies or a rare Qualfier win, the anti-German hysteria among some England supporters is sickening. They fail to remember the dismal record we have against Germany in tournaments, after that wonderful win in 1966:

1982: World Cup qualifier – England 1 – west Gernay 2. West Germany were beaten by Italy in the finals.

1985: some meaningless tournament called the City Tournament. England 3 – 0 Germany.

1990: World Cup: West Germany 1 – 1 England. No prizes for guessing which of those two beat Argentina in the Final.

1996: Euros: football came home ? another 1 – 1 draw, against a unified Germany, who won the Final.

2000, June: Euros: a rare tournament win. England 1 – 0 Germany. France won the Final.

                                Followed in October by –

                                2000: World Cup Qualifiers:  England 0 – Germany 1

2001: Germany’s biggest off day, World Cup: Germany 1 – England 5. I was going berserk in my living room.

2010: World Cup: Germany 4 – 1 England. Normal service is resumed.

In 2013, ’16 and ’17, we lost 3 successive friendlies.

It’s a pretty horrible record, is it not? The fans who turn up with blow-up Spitfires and anti-German chants, do not realise that the German fans do not understand the Spitfires and resent the chants. It makes us look an uncivilised bunch of hooligans and it’s why all our fans are watched carefully, all over the world. And jumped upon at the slightest excuse. Throwing bananas and racial slurs at foreign players, when half your own national team is composed of players with a different skin colour?- Das ist Die Englanders, mein kameraden. Ignoriere sie, Sie sind verrückt.

Thanks BL, had a great sleep actually, best for ages, totally zonked out. Grandson got some more gardening done but I had to break off when I received news that his sister had been taken home from the restaurant ill: shaking, dizzy and falling over. Took her to the local hospital and (after a 3 hour wait) they found nothing wrong, advised her to see GP tomorrow. So she is in our lounge atm waiting for dad to come hme from work.

Just 20 minutes ago, had an online conversation with Humax about the issues. It was one onscreen setting on the box – change Audio to “Stereo” from “Multi channel”. Did that, problem solved. Last night I Googled HDMI-CEC after your earlier post and also set that. (It was off) SWMBO was beginning to blame her new hearing aids, saying the sound was harsh, whilst I could not hear it like that.

It seems to be OK now anyway. If it stays that way I will be able to setup the NowTV box and move the HiFi speakers to the shelf besides the TV. Then I can tidy up all the rats nest of cables. If no one else is going to need granddad’s taxi/ambulance/shopping trolley/parcel transporter. (Have done some of that this week, or doing it tomorrow.)

I don’t understand the HDMI-CEC references, but will Google it and should find out. Very tired atm, soon off to bed. Thanks for the advice.

Both of mine have had various Anglo-Saxon names, at various times, that they were not given when Registered….?☺

One of my great-nieces (long story, convoluted family!) has a girl they named Florence. “I love those old names Uncle Bob.”

She was made up when I told her that was the name of my maternal grandma, who passed in 1939. That made her the baby girl’s 5Gmother. I had a Tree made up for baby Flo’s 1st birthday. I am a gg Uncle several times over now, can’t keep pace. Most of my lot breed like rabbits! Only Smiths and Jones have more British surnames than Williams. At this moment in time…

Jones and Williams are of Welsh origin. My grandad called that Celtic Revenge.

No argument from me that Sky is becoming irrelevant. I recorded my quitting of the Q-Box here a while ago: If I want to see GoT 8 when it hits the screen next, I have a NowTV box which I have to setup soon. I am going to run it alongside the Freesat box * via a network switch. The corner of the room where the cables reside, is going to house even more cables and connections soon! I am enjoying the Freesat service, with Sky we found that we were mostly watching programmes from Freeview and Freesat anyway. Thanks for the eurosport tips guys, going to look into that. I am a bit strapped for time to do stuff atm, as SWMBO is having several appointments before going in for her new hip on the 21st. My poor old Gert is suffering quite badly now and walking is a trial for her. I shall be chief cook, carer and cleaner after she comes out of the NHS workshop. In addition, we are having landscaping done at the rear of the bungalow, to make the back garden low maintenance. Things are a bit hectic here atm, daughter is also moving into her old house, which is now a new one after a rebuild taking almost 15 months.

*A few niggles with the Humax box: HD programmes have very loud volume compared to non-HD and that has to be controlled with a mix of Samsung soundbar remote and Humax remote. Procedure for switching off has to be – first switch off Humax box with Humax remote, wait for Humax box light to go completely red (Standby). Then switch off Sony TV with TV remote. Switching on again: turn on Humax box with Humax remote and wait for bootup. (it goes from red to purple, to blue) Freesat service boots up on TV after about a minute, TV remote not needed until switching off  for the night. NEVER turn off the Humax box, leave on Standby.

Failure to follow this routine leads to having to setup the service all over again, I found.

Sony Bravia 40″ (unsmart) TV, Samsung simple soundbar, Humax HD-R 1100S Freesat box. TV connected to soundbar by optical toslink, and to the Humax by HDMI lead. TV also has an ethernet connection and another HDMI socket, which will take the NowTV box eventually.

My eldest gdaughter learned how to Sign at school, simply because there was a girl whose family had moved into the area and the new girl was profoundly deaf. GD is a really caring lass and moved to sit next to the girl, learned how to communicate with her and helped her with schoolwork. That lass is now at Uni and still in contact with our GD, although her Service family has moved away.

You don’t explain why you need this Ryan, if it’s a personal thing tell me to MMOB, I won’t mind.

I know our GD went to a local Hearing Impaired evening class with the girl, which is where she learned how to sign. I know you said this: ” I’m struggling to get out of the house with Alice.. ” but one visit to a local Hearing Impairment place might give you the Home Learning tools and advice you need, from professionals.

Nice to see a lovely old name revived for your daughter, btw. It was also my mother’s name.
