IMO, most veterinarians make more accurate diagnoses than some of the consultants I have met. One of my former Insultants recorded this on my records in a large Nottinghamshire hospital: “He has an odd gait.” My view of that ‘expert’ opinion is not printable, but was passed to her in person and in basic English, with a request for a second opinion.

If she had made the correct diagnosis in the first place, I would not have been given treatment for 15+ years which exacerbated a broken vertebra. NOT a “slipped disc”, a broken vertebra. And if she had suffered the same problem, I would have been interested to see her ‘gait’.

Nothing worse than meeting the upper bracket of medical minds and realising they don’t have a clue, Richard. I have been there a couple of times and it is not pleasant, I feel for you and your family. I sincerely hope they come up with the (correct) diagnosis.

        Good Luck.

As long as you are aware that you cannot rely upon them John. Nothing worse than finding that your storage medium has let you down. My first bitter experience with that, was with the Zip Disk, don’t know if you came across them. They had an inbuilt fail problem referred to as the “Click of Death”. That lost me some old photos that I had spent hours editing and improving, thinking “One day soon I will print those”. Unfortunately I was still working and ran out of time. Inserted disk – CLICK! Dead as dino doo-doo. They were made by Iomega. The Zip Disk: –

          http://tinyurl.com/pok7abx

I built a Zip Drive into the PC I had at the time, had (10x) 100MB Disks and would have bought more, until that happened. It was a big improvement in capacity on the old Floppy, but didn’t have the floppy’s reliability. When the DVD came along that killed it off for good. I sold the drive and formatted Disks for peanuts, with a written warning on the receipt. What happened next is an unknown!

Richard your wife’s problem sounds somewhat like one of my own long-standing conditions, called Barrett’s Oesophagus. It began with food being stuck in the throat, progressed to sickness and acid reflux. An initial camera “session” came up with the Barrett’s diagnosis. The lining of the Oesophagus is attacked by stomach acids and reacts by defending itself, creating a lining on the Oesophagus wall which is exactly like the lining of the stomach. This decreases the diameter of the Oesophagus, meaning that food has to be chewed really well and washed down with a drink. (I use carbonated mineral water, which works better that anything else I have tried) In my case it creates a lot of gastric mucous most mornings, when I cough for England! I have to take 2x Lansaprazole every day to keep the pipes open and free from reflux, which can be very painful and debilitating. I have to have a camera every 2 years, with biopsies, as apparently the cells lining the Oesophagus can become cancerous, although I have been having this every 2 years since 2000 and it is fine. Gargling with warm water helps. I am due another camera invasion in February.

The continual reflux also created a Hiatus Hernia for me, which may exist but seems to make no difference to my life, so on the principle “ignore it and it may not bother me” I leave it be. There is a family connection, in that my parents’ first born would have been my sister, but she died at a few months old in 1926. From what my dad told me, sister Eileen died because she could not swallow and ingest food, so starved to death. It was obviously painful for dad to tell me this, so I did not pursue it further. After that one daughter, my parents had 3 boys: I am younger by 15 and 17 years. It is sobering for me to realise that I was born 19 years after my oldest sibling. Life is strange.

Would you be keeping those 8GB discs a long time John? Keep them out of direct light, especially sunlight, and away from heat, humidity  or cold. People who have stored discs have discovered problems later:

              http://tinyurl.com/oexuefv

I stopped storing backups on discs a long time ago. I use a simple 2TB NAS and that to a 2TB external Hdd. Photos, videos & music are on those and also on Google Drive. I keep an eye on the health of each Hdd and change them every 2 years. Format and sell them on locally via FB, it’s not worth going to Ebay.

The Brother MFC-J6930DW is £239.60 inc VAT John. A pack of XL cartridges is £85.49.

Toner cartridges last a lot longer than ink. Just a thought: you might have some initial higher cost, but in the long run, consumables will be cheaper. Select “Price” -“Low to High”, some of them are very expensive.

Richard, are you able to take your own meter readings? Apologies if you have mentioned somewhere else that you cannot. That’s what I do with EDF, have done for over 4 years now. My account is registered on their website, I take the readings every month and send them via the website. There is usually a response and new bill within 48 hours and an adjustment one way or t’other: last reading was after I had just setup a new online, paperless tariff and I received an actual reduction in the payment.

I have stuck with EDF for their great customer service and the really good website, which has a very efficient Online Chat service. In the past, I have taken readings and been given a new payment amount that I dispute. I talk to the Chatline and there is always an agreement, usually a compromise. Especially after I told them that I am aware that they build up “Credit” amounts on my Statements, for the beneficial effect upon EDF’s accounts, with a corresponding disadvantage upon my bank account! I once made them repay an excess Credit amount from my account.

I have also continued to refuse a Smart meter. They do not have the usual “old out of date meter” reason, as both gas and leccy meters wer fitted new in March 2016. And as we all know, smart meters are not compulsory.

I hope the HP 7612 True A3 AIO Is a less voracious eater of printheads and ink tanks than my old CP 1700 standalone was.

                    http://tinyurl.com/ybzcnm5c

Not an AIO: no scanner, just a USB-connected monster which was so heavy that it came in its own crate. It had 3 colour and one black cartridge, with separate inktanks. From ’95 to 2003, after injury, disability and ending employed work, I carried out a 12 month course at a disability college, together with weekends at another tech college. I started working as a self-employed designer & printer and eventually (around ’98) bought a PC and the Monster with money from my last job. It printed everything I designed faultlessly: business stationery, brochures, prospectuses, booklets and entertainment packs. But the cart’s and inktanks eventually reached £28+ each and when I finally retired, I sold it to someone who had been badgering me for it. I warned him about the price of cart’s and tanks, but he would not listen: he could not resell it as printers had moved on. Think he dumped it. I can only find these tanks and ‘heads in the USA, look at the price of them now:

                    http://tinyurl.com/y8h7559k

It also printed photographs, some of which I still have. They appeared to be OK to me, until I compared copies made on the 9yo Photosmart C5380 that I have now. That’s 5-cart and I only ever use genuine HP cart’s, which I shop around for. The 5380 prints the best photos and colour copies I have ever seen from an inkjet. My 5380 is an A4 printer with 5 cart’s, one of which is a Photo Black: all 5 cart’s are HP Vivera ink and I only buy the —-X high capacity cart’s. HP no longer make a 5 cart printer and most A3 printers listed also use a “Tri Cart” which is one of those 3-colour jobs. When one colour runs out, the cart is U/S. That’s why I look after my 5380, and why I will probably have to look beyond HP if it dies. I think HP is yet another company making products without the quality and effectivity of previous models.

West Country girls are not to be messed with. I learnt that as a 16 yo at Merchant Navy Training School, Sharpness. And again whilst doing N.I. training at Penhale Sands, Cornwall. Cornwall is Far West of course, more like an independent country.

John I didn’t realise it was a SFF PC, or I would not have recommended that one. But as Nolan says, external DVDRW’s are available for a good price. I bought one a few years ago for a grandbrat’s project, she never used it and I only used it twice. What are you planning to use it for?

Black Friday has started. I just purchased a WileyFox Swift 2X at Amazon. At a discount of £75 I can put up with the absence of Galilao, and my Elephone mobile’s battery is dying rapidly with no chance of replacement..

Wise move Ed, that (or its successor) will be my next phone. If the original Swift dies, although it answers all my needs atm.

I don’t think SWMBO enjoyed me dragging her out to Mablethorpe North End* last Sunday in the teeth of a howling North wind, though! *The quietest part of the beaches. And the most exposed, up on the Sandhills. My OH was disgruntled.

And I bet her thoughts on the matter were audible – even over the wind!!!

What made it worse was that she is waiting for a new hip, complained that she cannot get out and said she is perfectly fit to have a good walk, against my advice. So I took her out.

Good link, Steve, thanks. Nolan, quoted:

My car is exempt. Not an issue for me but nice to know. It really makes no difference as I have a blue badge so I’m exempt from the congestion charge anyway.

Same situation here Nolan. I do visit London occasionally, mostly friends in High Barnet, which is really almost rural compared to the rest of the place, and does not qualify for the Congestion Charge.. Cannot see us going down to Dulwich again after SWMBO’s lovely old Welsh aunt passed away. Her daughter, SWMBO’s cousin, lives in a very exclusive gated community and it is a real pita to access. TBH, I like the lass and her family, but I hate the absolute nightmare that is getting there. Cannot stand cities anyway, especially London (sorry BL & others, didn’t say Londoners!) and SWMBO feels the same. We is country bumpkins, always have been.

I like it, it’s much faster and has several new features that add to the experience. Whilst using it, I became aware that I had lots of bookmarks that I didn’t need, and others that needed tidying into folders. Done that and it’s even more usable. It was getting bloated, I have to admit. Keep it quick, Mozilla!

Both wrong, but England are looking better every time out IMO. We stood up against and almost beat one of the world’s best teams. If they continue to improve, we might even make it past the quarter finals this time. The last move, when Solanke could have scored, was a lovely bit of football. From another accurate cross by Kyle Walker, who kept Neymar and Marcello quiet for long periods. The defence looks good.

Ireland are out, beaten 5-1 by Denmark, who will be there with their Scandinavian mates from Sweden.

Thought there might have been a sigh of relief from Steve when Coutinho was taken off in the 67th minute, without an injury. ???
