Very sensitive of you Steve, what a sacrifice you make in the name of good marital relations. ??

I make a similar sacrifice, by going into this room and watching footy on the PC instead of making our Gert sit through it*. She hates football, don’t know how we made it through all these years together. I even took her to the City Ground once, a long time ago when we about to be promoted (briefly) back into the Premiership. We beat Middlesborough 4 – 0, Stan Collymore and Brian Roy were unplayable that day. She was unimpressed, especially as my 5 nieces, 2 nephews and various in-laws were there and screaming their heads off.

You can please some of the women some of the time, even some of them all of the time, but you can’t … well, you get the picture.

*When I hear her snoring on the sofa, I sneak back in and watch on the big screen, TV volume down and hearing aids turned up. ??

How many of your offspring are Welsh-born Steve? It sounds like your youngest are being indoctrinated!

What amuses me about this whole Prince of Wales thing, is the fact that the first one became Edward II, the son of English King Edward I, who killed the last Welsh PoW in battle:    http://tinyurl.com/ycr4547c

Why many of the Welsh continue to have a belief in English royalty is something only they would be able to explain. Maybe. The present Royals are not of English descent anyway. The Georges, ancestors of Victoria, were all Hanoverian Germans. Before that, all the Royals were descended from a mix of Norman French and real Scandinavians. So they are not really English, but then who is?

I know the Welsh fascination with religion, my grandad was High Church and did not like dad marrying a Methodist. He was even more peed off when dad told him it didn’t matter, as he was actually an atheist and followed gran’s Romany Earth beliefs (as do I). My Gt7 ancestor was christened Manasseh Williams and came from the Machynlleth/Dolgellau area. That name is apparently the title of one of the 12 tribes of Israel, and there is a black American rapper called Manasseh Williams, with many more black people having the same name. Go figure, as the Yanks say. I love Welsh male voice choirs, though. Listening to “Bread of Heaven” always lifts the hairs on the back of my neck.

I have a male cousin in Staffordshire, another religious nutter, who has the Family Bible and has sent me details from it. He is an arrogant barsteward who thinks he has correctly translated from the Welsh. He has it all wrong, I have researched the family history and he missed out the fact that our Gt2 father was married 3 times and had about a zillion brats. I took great pleasure in informing him that he has paid alot of money to have a Family History professionally printed, with all the wrong ancestors for more than 200 years. ?? I actually visited the Uni of Wales at Aberystwyth, and researched Welsh parish records. Then I travelled through Herefordshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire for the rest.

Water butts are also good if you have a garden to water. I only have two downpipes, but have fitted one butt to each downpipe. Make sure the base is level: I put a 600 x 600mm slab under mine, after levelling the ground, before measuring and aligning the butts to the pipe, which is critical: get it wrong and the runoff either goes down the pipe or overflows the butt. This is what happened to my neighbour, who paid a “handyman” to do it. I removed them and did it properly, he was definitely not handy.

I heartily second this:   ” Once kids come along washing clothes and dishes eats water. As usual it is a tax on the young and poor. ”

My single-parent son has 2 adult kids living with him, a 19 yo son and 21 yo daughter. He pays significantly more than we do, as 2 seniors in a bungalow. We help out both him and our daughter by doing a limited amount of washing for them both. I know how long my 19 yo gson takes to shower, because he occasionally has one here when I pick him up from work, when he is going straight out with mates. I could shower about 3 times in the same time!

If it is the one in the above link, and seeing only 1 GB of RAM, it does not sound hopeful:

Richard I am sorry to hear of your troubles, you are really having it rough, our troubles here pale into insignificance. I hope that your wife is soon in a better situation and you are able to cope with your daughter. Please don’t feel you have to respond here atm, if you lack time and/or energy to do so.

Water: we are with Anglian Water, with a water meter which was installed when we moved here in 2003. Our current annual charge is £486.47. They are currently working in our area and are about halfway through installing new mains, pumps and piping throughout a large area of East Lindsey. Over the last 6 years or so, they have installed new sewer drains throuhout our village and others, and laid a whole new water supply overland from Covenham Reservoir* to Boston. That is about 40 miles and caused alot of disruption, but some happy farmers who were paid large sums to allow work over their lands. Considering the work they have done, and have planned, I am not going to quibble about the cost to us. They inherited a broken, ancient system, as did many of the utility companies I would suppose. Anglian are a good company, IMO.

Energy: We are with EDF for gas & leccy, have been for >5 years and are happy with them. Currently, we pay £83/month for both, the tariff being their August 18 Online Saver. Just sent a reading last night, received a bill online today. No change. Thanks to the cold Autumn here and more inclement recent weather, we had the heating on all day for several days. We expected an increase from £89 in October after a previous reading, we received a reduction to £83 instead and there is a healthy Credit balance atm. Their website is a model for others, the chatline works well and gives good, knowledgeable responses. I won’t switch whilst it stays like that. They helped us enormously during the meter problems we had when the GCH was installed: gave us an overcharge refund, compensation, and took action against Northern Energy on our behalf, to get more compensation. I know that we might save a few quid if we switch, but customer service like that is rare IMO.

There is a Sailing Club there, with a great restaurant. It is on a large hill, from where you can see for miles and there is a 5-mile walk around it. SWMBO and I have walked it, it’s beautiful on a good day. Some rare insects and moths have made it their home.

Been away all day, driving about in heavy snow showers down the East Coast. Here in East Lindsey we had the worst of it, but it became half-rain about 3 pm, the slush is now freezing and I have to venture out again tomorrow. Happy days! Discovered that the Tucson Auto will spin its wheels on frozen slush if I don’t pull away slowly, so I drove accordingly*. Idiots on the A16 going too fast and spinning out, 2 in a Dyke, several on the verges. Blizzard conditions, several white-outs and some muppets without lights on. One day of snow, people forget how to drive according to the conditions.

Never had you down as a Royalist Dave, but I guess you never had me down as a Republican. I think Ed’s last post says it all for me: –

The way they breed like rabbits concerns many, but supposedly only one fifth of the population actually want to abolish the monarchy – but watch that percent shoot up if the Clown Prince takes over.

I personally think they are irrelevant and can stay in place provided they are self funding and pay full death duties on everything including the stuff they have salted-away overseas.

‘Boy meets girl?’ Both a lot of years away from that. I am not a conspiracy theorist, just offering my own take on all the hysteria generated by what I see as a simple distraction from political and economic events in the UK. It does not just apply to Harry and his 36 yo beau btw: the Royals and their doings have long been almost worshipped as super-celebs and minor gods. It amuses me when one or more of them complain about exposure and privacy. Give it all up and leave the life! But leave your easy living behind.

I would not turn a blind eye to any of my grandchildren doing some of the dumb things that Harry has done. I praise them when they deserve it, but I criticise when they need it, which is rarely. It’s tough love. I am not a racist either: I have friends from different cultures and one of my best mates when growing up is a great bloke, still a good mate, born in Trinidad. Then there’s Victor Lim, who taught me Taoist meditation. Vijay, my mate from an Indian family. Ibrahim, born in Iraq. Cass, born in the Bahamas and back living there. I helped him out recently after the Hurricane destroyed his home. I voted remain and I still believe that the two daftest things the British people ever did was (a) to vote to join the Common Market and (b) to compound that error by voting to leave the EU.

The amount of tourist money that the Royals supposedly bring in to the UK, is just a small percentage of the wealth that the Queen alone possesses. It is also a tiny increment of the tax that multinationals trading in the UK possess, which is something else that needs to be fixed. The Royal ‘events’ and activities such as Trooping The Colour, are more evidence of the way this country looks back instead of forward: and please remember that I am an ex-soldier with 12 years service. I truly believe everything that I said in all those points and I also believe that we would be better served by an elected Head of State who was not a billionaire. No Trump here, please!

Thanks for allowing me to spark a healthy debate Dave!

I am recalling up some of my own older problems whilst reading about yours Richard. Some time ago, I told the story of my encounter with a hit and run stolen car in Germany, which led to a 3 day coma, fractured skull, cracked ribs and 2 broken legs. I was fortunate in being taken by a German ambulance to a German hospital and had a series of 3 brain operations, performed by a very good German surgeon. That was the time when I vacated my perch 3 times and was revived. My nose had been flattened, part of the bridge was replaced by a plastic compound and the sinuses still bother me today. For almost another year I had literally blinding headaches and kept asking the Army medics to send me to ENT. Eventually a new young M.O. took over the garrison Med Centre and agreed: they found a very tiny sliver of bone from the accident, pressing on a nerve intermittently, which gave me the headaches. Removal of that cured the headaches but I am left with a sinal cavity on the left which is smaller than the right. My nose is always dry, never found relief for that, but I am going to try the vaseline and see if it helps: no one has ever suggested it, as it was always thought that the Barretts was causing most of my problems in that regard. Thanks for the tip!

Glad you enjoyed the meal. I am due to take out my grandsons on Saturday, it is haircut and meal time for us lads. Steak & Ale pie for me and a monster burger for them, but real beef burgers at a local restaurant. No McDonalds for us!

You were wrong, but not by much. England goalie was lazy though. It was women vs. girls TBH, the Kazakh girls are all part timers. 90% of the play was in the Kazakh half. It should have been more than 5. But once again, the England lasses can only beat what is in front of them and they did it well, winning back the ball if they lost it. They look professional, very confident on the ball.

And once again they did not swop shirts, that’s a bad habit. Should make it compulsory. ??

Not my bailiwick games, but I have spoken to my grandson No.1 about this one. “Bad way to lose an hour or so of your life and then wonder what it was all about when you stop playing, grandad.”

This from a 23 yo who has been playing EveOnline and many other games, since he was a nipper. He’s a Game fanatic: has a monster PC, buys all the latest when they come out and buys all the associated (printed) books, mags, souvenir and limited editions (“Future Collectors’ stuff, grandad!”). His spare bedroom has shelves of this stuff, with masses of SF and Game publications. On Eve he manufactures ships, mines ore, leads his group to war and makes deals. Whatever that all means.

Thanks for all the advice guys, but problem is well solved. SWMBO’s phone eventually came back almost fixed: the Android update still would not work, but after an email to Wileyfox, they took time to guide me through it*. Using Google and ES, I was able to format the SD card successfully, transfer some data, pic’s and other stuff to the card.

*Interesting to note that WF returned the simple, inexpensive Spark, with a bigger battery, which meant they had to put it in a larger case. I am encouraged by their customer service and the patience of their operatives. I would buy another Wfox if mine dies. More to the point, SWMBO is happy with her phone. Morning guys, thanks for responding.

I didn’t have a mini box; just the Sky Hub (router) and a Q Box, Dwynne. The remote control pictured is, as John says, the Sky TV remote only. It takes over all functions that used to control your TV with, say, Freeview.

If you follow the Settings John gives, but can’t get it to work, then you can have it by all means. PM me.

The Hub is actually krap as a router: only 2 LAN ports, one of which must be used to connect the Q Box if your speeds aren’t good enough for WiFi, which is actually weak: since taking Plusnet and setting up my 3 yo TP Link 9980, my WiFi is fine throughout the house and way into the garden. When I return home and pass the bungalow in front of mine, our phones ping to tell us we are in range. The Hub did not even reach this room, 2 rooms and a hall away. Thanks Richard, there is an alternative to living with it all but I don’t fancy it. After being revived 3 times within 5 hours in a German operating theatre in the 70’s, I developed a different outlook on life and how good it is, disregarding any and all health issues. Today I took my youngest gdaughter out to a film after a beach visit: blue sky and my favourite young person to share a lunch, a cinema visit and lots of interesting conversation with. Happiness!

I live by my old dad’s Secret Of Life rule: you just have to keep waking up every morning.

I just like the idea that a load of mp now have a reason to do “research” on pornhub.

Many of them will be carrying out similar “research” in cheap, rented hotel rooms and internet cafes, now they know what happens if they ‘accidentally’ touch females (or males) innapropriately, during the course of their duties.

My Barrett’s problem, causes Gastric mucous/cattarrh, not that caused by a sinus or any other breathing passage problem. No amount of Vaseline, Vick, Eucalyptus or other substance to ease breathing, can stop this. The mucous comes from the Barretts condition, which is the oesophagus/gullet defending itself against acid reflux, by creating cells to line the gullet which are indistinguishable from the cells that line the wall of the stomach. In the stomach, these cells continually produce gastric mucous, which coats food with a lining to help digestion. These cells are also created in a Barretts oesophagus, but in that case they also trap food particles, which produces more mucous. As I said before, it is a vicious circle. My neighbour once heard me coghing for so long in the bathroom, via the vented window, that he came round to ask SWMBO if I was OK.

My condition was complicated by scarring of the pleural cavity some years ago after a bad bout of pneumonia and pleurisy. This scarring has gradually healed over time. However my Barretts consultant here in Lincolnshire, who gave me the above explanation, believes that the scarring and associated breathing problems masked much of the gastric cattarrh caused by reflux and the Barretts condition, for many years. They gave me an inhaler in Notts hospitals, which is something else they should not have done.

I have to say that I have never had a GP that I did not believe in. The one back in Notts was actually a personal friend, who fought for me to get Incapacity and DLA. Every GP here in Lincs, has been fine. The two I see regularly now are the guys who wrote (together) to another consultant, to have my infected gall bladder removed after 13 months of severe illness.

In Notts, I was once MOT – testing my GP mate Terry’s* Land rover. After I finished, I told him about some painful pimples. He told me to remove my overalls and gave me an examination bent over the Headlamp alignment beam tester! “Come up to the surgery tomorrow: you have Shingles!” That was my first attack of Shingles, I had the Shingles vaccine a few years ago and never had another dose of that very painful condition since.

*RIP Terry, a good mate and a very good, old school GP. Warm your stethoscope, mate.
