When we first came to this village in April 2003, I was not aware of the reception problems and Digital TV was not on the horizon for the Belmont transmitter.  I had a guy from Mablethorpe booked to fit my aerial in the loft, told one of my neighbours and he told me to look at the aerials fitted around the Close and the rest of the village. They were all on unusually high masts and all secured with thick wire rope around the chimneys. A guy with a business based in the village had fitted them all, so I cancelled the Mablethorpe chap and relied on local knowledge. The local fitter now has a large business, still lives here, and carries out CCTV, IT and TV systems for lots of other businesses now. He still answers the call if a villager wants him though. He fitted only one type of domestic aerial, said it was best for the area, must be OK as we went seamlessly into digital once it arrived. When a certain tree was removed, that is. The setup cost me £60 at the time I think, and cost him a few years perhaps, as he was balanced on the ladder shoving a 20 foot scaffold pole in the air, with the aerial attached and checking his meter at the same time. Brave chap. In 2012 he carried the Olympic Torch for us.

I now have Freesat and a Humax STB, but the aerial coax is coiled up neatly behind the TV and Freeview can be had through the aerial anytime there is a Freesat, Humax or dish problem, as long as I can find the actual TV remote. (SWMBO “tidies up” such things, even when left in a specific drawer, batteries out) The mast is strapped so securely to the chimney that only the chimney falling off could fetch it down. Which is why I had the landlord ‘point up’ the brickwork a couple of years ago. I also had an FM antenna fitted on the same mast and that is doing double duty as a digital radio receiver. I actually prefer FM myself, glad the gov have put off FM switch off.

Cannot believe that the BBC Sport site and “experts” made Kyle Walker Man of Match. Yes, he was good and playing in a slightly unfamiliar position, but Maguire was standout. Maybe because what he did was unspectacular, he just ran the defensive effort. During Dutch attacks, he could be seen continually marshalling the defence and going in with tackles or interceptions. Sometimes I think the media reporters just watch the highlights later.

Another clean sheet. I feel a bit more hopeful about Russia. I also think Southgate is building something that can be called a team.

There is a reason why HPro has to be paid for Dwynne: it is the best I have used for removing nasties.

I keep it running on SWMBO’s lappy, because granddaughters use that. The 12 yo is savvy and does not go on anything potentially suspect, but the 21 yo has no idea about security. Her 19 yo brother checks her lappy regularly and sweeps it clean, when she’s out. If she ever finds out, he’s in trouble, though. His point is that nothing nasty should be allowed on the network. Once she moves out and lives with her BF, that old HP Dv7 Pavilion is in danger.

My area of East Lindsey, Lincs, is surrounded by water of one sort or another: the North sea, several rivers including the Trent and Humber, and backed in the west by the Wolds. There is something about this environment that gives us a micro-climate, often different to surrounding areas. We get our BBC forecasts from “BBC North, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.” Most of the time it is wrong, don’t know if that is down to the main forecaster Paul Hudson or not. (a Barnsley lad: if you’re reading this Lee, he is a Bradford City fan and was at the stadium fire game) What may often be correct for E. Yorks, is not always true for us. What may be correct for other parts of Lincolnshire, is not always true here either. We have one of the driest climates in the UK, although that must mean the rest is at least 3 feet under water most of the time.??

The weather for the whole of the UK is notoriously difficult to predict, despite the £millions spent on super computers. Our position, between the Atlantic to the west and south, Arctic to the north and the huge landmass of Eurasia to the East, produces waves of opposing weather systems that are liable to spin off into directions that cannot be predicted, especially if the Jet Stream decides to switch to the north or south of us. The main benefit of all this unpredictable weather, has been Social: it gives the British something to talk about and breaks the ice between strangers (except when travelling on the London Underground, where anyone attempting to strike up a conversation is regarded as potentially mentally unstable.) There are so many nouns and adjectives for British weather, but I do love my old mam’s description concerning one type of precipitation: “Eet’s that rain as gets yer wet.” She meant the fine stuff that is between drizzle and mist of course. My old German mate Rolf was baffled after returning from a holiday in the UK, during which he toured the country. “You British have conversations about your weather, which you keep going for a very long time.”

              He has a point.

A win, but could have been more emphatic, should have had at least 2 more goals. Absolutely dominated the Nederlanders at times, the usual England failure to turn chances into goals. I thought The Ox played his best game in an England shirt, gave hardly anything away, whereas Dele Alli gave away possession and decided to indulge in his sly little shin-hacks and heel taps. I have no time for Alli: bags of ability but not as good as he thinks he is, and throws out his teddy when it goes against him. Kane makes him look good at Spurs, and IMO Son is a much better player. Stones played well, but the real player in the defence is Maguire, who gets better with every game. I think Cahill has lost his place. Pickford looks like the best No.1 for me: why Joe Hart is even still in the running, is beyond me.

BL, will you give us back Antonio if you get Balotelli? ??

But Steve has a point: these games have broken up a 7-game undefeated run for Forest. Hope we carry it on.

Make sure the installer uses the black, screened Co Ax BL. One herbert around here is still using the old brown stuff. I think he’s had the stuff for years, caught him at a neighbour’s with it. We have a reception problem here: below the Wolds and lots of trees. We all have tall aerials, he was trying to say neighbour doesn’t need it high and wanted to put it in the loft. One short 3-way conversation later, he was off. My son bought the aerial, cable and kit, as aerial erecting was one of the many jobs he did after redundancy in the 90’s. As he still has a tuning meter, he installed the aerial and neighbour is happy.

I know I often harp on about the place where I was workshop foreman for many years, but we prided ourselves on looking after the local motoring community as fairly as possible. A pit village until 1988, there was also a fairly well-to-do larger village 2 miles away, stretching into the A60 Nottingham road where the real money was. A surprising number of wealthy folk used to come to us: one in particular had been co-owner of an Estate Agency chain, sold out to his younger partner and retired. He had been running pre-owned BMW’s to that point and we carried out all his servicing and repairs. He decided to put some of his new wealth into a 735i, and went to a Nottingham main dealer to buy it. Got himself a good deal (estate agent, right?) and then shocked them by saying he wanted us to service and maintain it. They refused, so he walked out. They called him back and tried to talk down to him: big mistake. he walked again. In the end they settled for carrying out the first service and making us take genuine BMW parts. When I left (’95), he still had the car and the garage was still servicing it, but after the warranty ended it was pattern parts.

The same chap told me something interesting when the Poll Tax came out. He said that it meant that he could now buy his daughter a much better car, whilst guys like me were running what we could. Considering his wealth, there was nothing standoffish about him: he once went up to the chippy at lunchtime and sat eating fish’n’chips with us in our cabin. He was also a big tipper.

The garage was a real family affair: boss was a farmer and ex-biker mate, left the garage for me to run: up on his farm was a huge pair of garages, where the Recovery trucks lived. His twin sons ran the body shop, I trained his youngest son as a mechanic, and his daughter was the receptionist/secretary. Boss’s wife grew up across the road from me. The best part about starting there, was that after 2 years we put the place over the road out of business. As that was the place I started in after leaving the Army, and was run by an ex-German POW who was a Psycho, I was happy with that. We made no distinction between customers: I would not allow anyone to jump the work rota, no matter how much wealth or how big their house.

JB I’m not sure which switch is involved, did they show you which one? Could be the temperature sender unit, which passes info to the dash temperature guage, YouTube video:

                          https://youtu.be/3fKm643JixA

If that was leaking over time and then was fixed, there must be another cause, a litre is a lot to lose. Did you check engine oil for water? Take a look at the dipstick and oil filler cap, if there is any stuff like mayonnaise, it’s a head problem. Any decent small garages near you? Ask friends and neighbours. I hate these Eurofit/Kwikfit type places, they are franchises and make money out of parts and whatever jobs they can dream up.

                            Well that was interesting.

I had my new DVB-T2 Hauppage tuner in this desktop, working with the WinTV setup, including their EPG. This had lost most of the channels you indicated Richard. I played with the EPG for a while, but TBH it is a real mess. Before I installed the DVB-T2 tuner card, I had used the previous (DVB) tuner card with WMP and that was a much better EPG.

I uninstalled WinTV and installed WMP. All the channels came back and I can use WMP’s EPG much more easily. However, they are not displaying programme data on HD channels, which is not a serious problem.

Hope all these acronyms are understandable!

BL: with that aerial, you can probably get “The Lone Ranger”, original black and white “Superman”, “Champion the Wonder Horse” and Muffin The Mule on “Children’s Hour”. ???

Channel 4 and All4, have left Freesat HD BL:

                              http://tinyurl.com/ybtjumrd

I got notification from Humax a couple of weeks ago. “Vanilla” Ch.4 is still OK.

Extract: ” This followed the notification by Freesat of major changes to its charging structure, significantly increasing Channel 4’s costs, which ultimately takes funding away from our investment in British programmes. To reduce the overall burden of these costs and make internal savings, we have withdrawn All 4 and Channel 4HD while we consider our long term relationship with Freesat. ”

So they are indulging in the usual British practice of Blame Each Other, with the PBC* in the middle, as always. I will take a look at Freeview channels later on this desktop HD tuner, as Freesat is on lounge TV. Off to pick up N0.2 Gson from work now.

I find that Hotmail/Outlook actually “learns” faster than Gmail. Very few scams and unwanted emails get into my Outlook now, and those are sent straight to Junk by Outlook itself. Gmail is a different story: I am still getting Scandinavian “Ladies” (and occasional Gents!) offering me services (?) that I do not understand because I don’t speak or read Scandihoovian. I am gradually reducing those by blocking, but it takes gmail longer than Outlook.

JB, if you check everywhere and find no leak under the bonnet, feel at the carpet directly beneath the dash. If it’s wet, it might be a leak from the Heater Matrix. If it’s dry, after you have driven somewhere, leave the engine running and stand behind the car, get someone to rev it slightly. Any white smoke? Might be a cylinder head problem: leaking gasket or valve. Check your engine oil: any water/oil emulsion? Defo leaking head gasket, maybe valve(s). Not trying to frighten you, might be something simple and quick.

What make & model is your car JB?

                                      OUCH!

My old and much-missed mate Vic used to come over from Oz every year and stay with us. I had to fetch him from his sister’s and sometimes take him to an airport to catch a Schiphol connection back home. He would not drive in the UK, having been in Oz since we were both 22, hated UK roads. He said that the combination of driving on the left, masses of traffic in small areas, and potholes, put him off. Vic passed away 3 years ago, he would not believe how bad the potholes have become by now, just in that short space of time.

He also drove a Mazda Miata (MX 5 model name in Oz) back home in a small town near Brisbane. ‘Near’ meaning 90 Km away.

Louth town Council, Virgin installers and Lincolnshire Council currently having a 3-cornered argument about one stretch of road entering town. It’s about ¼ mile long: first 100 yards or so is good, then really bad potholes and patches which have become speedbumps. Then about 75 yards of good road, followed by the last stretch which is much worse than the first bad stretch. Drivers are weaving around the deep bits. Atm we have to go in that way, as Virgin are installing along another way into town and there is scaffolding causing a road closure of the only alternative.

You could not make it up: planning is non-existent.

Thanks Dave, just checked, no current updates: but I remembered another, apparently insignificant problem with 7 Updates on the day before the problem ocurred. My Windows Updates are set to “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.”

I was offered the latest 7 Rollup, went into Update – and it disappeared from the Updates List. Had this once before, so I Restarted, went back to Updates – and there was the Rollup. Downloaded and installed OK. Next day was the problem. No further hiccups, except a disappearnace of the whole network at the time. It all recovered OK.

Could the contents be used to fill potholes, Nolan? ?

Sorry mate, hope it gets better soon.

It is a very funny and entertaining movie, saw it on Sky I think last year. Jeff Bridges is brilliant and gives a great OTT performance. Daft plot, but then most of the really good American movies have daft plots. It’s the ones which appear to be written by someone analyzing comedy, that are usually krap.
