          Staying with animals:

As a teenager I inherited a dog from my two nephews, after promising their dad my much-missed Big bro, they would look after it, but didn’t. Bro turned up at our house and gave Patch to me. I already used to walk him anyway, so he was fine with us. Patch was a ‘Grew’ – a Greyhound/Whippet cross. Mostly white and brown, a big brown patch over one eye, and could run like the wind. Caught us loads of rabbits and even the occasional Hare.

This was a time when my city cousin Bill used to come over from Stoke and loved walking out into the fields and forest around the village. Took him out with Patch one day and showed him how that dog could run. His trick was to lead him away from one of us a couple of hundred yards, then call him. Told Bill to wait while I took Patch into the woods, then call him, but don’t move aside when he runs at you, as he swerves at the last minute.

Being a city lad, when Patch came at him at warp factor 12, he moved. Tremendous collision between Patch’s head and cousin’s knees! Bill lying on the floor holding his legs and moaning, Patch staggering around shaking his head, me on the floor LMAO. Had to carry Patch home and support a limping cousin. Patch very quiet for the rest of the day, lying under our apple trees with his head on Bill’s belly, both fast asleep.

Same dog used to walk through very long grass in a local meadow. I would call him to see he had not wandered off and he would leap like a kangaroo, seeming to hang in the air for seconds, looking at me through that comical patch over his eye and seeming to say “What?”

I loved that dog, think he was the favourite out of all my dogs. If dad took him out, walking with his stick, he would follow behind him at a slow walk. Mam would talk to Patch as if he was a kid, he used to cock his head from side to side as if listening, but after a bit he would get up and walk out. I knew how he felt!

Nice one Lee, was going to watch that later, but there is a full length Forest match on FB tonight from 1991. Forest 7 Chelsea 0, great memories of hammering Chelsea, when we had a team. Week after, we beat Norwich away 5-0, then Leeds away 4-3.  :yahoo:

Then Gazza cheated and fouled us out of the FA Cup. :negative:

I am not as sympathetic about that drunken git as most of the media are.

How are you managing the skin condition TCB? The Hydrex seems to be working for me better than the Hibiscrub was, I was still getting pimple flare ups that died before they could become nastier. Using the Hydrex has stopped that.

Yes I have a great bunch of GP’s and the Co Op pharmacy is good too: a friend of my missus works there. Queues are a bugga though!

I find it more than annoying that infection and death rates are being listed as higher “in the Midlands”. That is a very wide area, from heavily urban West Midlands to East Midlands, and very rural Lincolnshire is included in that area category. I think we should be included as East England, along with East Anglia. Our infection rates are far below even Nottingham. Whenever the media speak about ‘The Midlands’ they invariably mean the West Midlands. Population densities become increasingly less dense, the further you travel East from Brum and the Black Country. And West, come to think of it.

Most of urban UK in a microcosm Graham. No such big cosmopolitan mix here in East Lindsey. Going to Lincoln is a bit different, going back to my birth city of Nottingham is a culture shock, but so is Boston.

I mostly get deliveries by DPD and have their mobile app, but can also access it on PC. Today I had a new bathroom console delivered, DPD emailed and texted this morning to give an arrival time of 2 pm to 6 pm, with a further text from the driver to contact her when she was at the gate. Dozy me left my phone in another room and missed the text.  Our apartment block has electric front gates and a small electromagnetic side gate. Driver phoned me from the side gate, I went out to get it with my trolley and fetched it, very heavy! Told her where the front gate was and how to contact me on landline next time. She took down the details, drove round to the front and photographed it for others.

Looks like DPD are contracting out some deliveries, this one was a Manchetts Transport truck & driver:

                        https://tinyurl.com/rh3d8n3

Driver was a young blonde and looked about 7 stone wet through. She had to drop the tail lift and leave it on the pavement for me to trolley back.. Much hassle, the trolley usually carries my toolbox, which meant I had to lift that off to get the parcel. Building it up tomorrow. Bit of an expensive time atm, we need a condenser tumble dryer and the kit to place it on the washer. The washer is plumbed in behind a cupboard, all fittings there for it, working fine although it’s a Zanussi about 12 years old. Probably jinxed it now! Then I’ve ordered a HiFi cabinet (tomorrow) and we need a new dining table & chairs. I’ve sourced all the stuff, put it all in Firefox pocket, ordering and paying is OK but I need to stage the jobs out so I can carry them all out, I’m getting on a bit now you know! 😉 Next item will be racking storage for this spare room/second bedroom, then a futon or sofa bed as SWMBO insists we need one “for the grandchildren.” Youngest is 15 this July, no chance of her sleeping over now. After Covid is done, she will return to sleepovers at her mates. Eldest is her brother at 26 and he lives in the apartment above ours.

What fun this extended move has been: finally managed to get Fire TV set up (thanks Nolan!) and the old tech DVD player also. Tomorrow or next day, HiFi plumbed in to the record deck.

Our dump Council recycling facility also closed, at exactly the wrong time for me! I had put loads of (non-corruptible) rubbish on the back garden slabs at our old home, and was planning to remove all carpets, which they ask us to do when we leave. My son and I were going to collect it all and take it to the Council facility, but Covid intervened. I have written and emailed the Housing Association Big Boss, explaining why we could not do this. So far I have nothing but a deafening silence and I do not want be charged for this. Our old bungalow was No.5 in a line of 6, connected by  small utility rooms. No.6 next door had died some weeks before we left and both are now still empty, or “Void Properties” in association language.

Have a feeling I will need my friendly solicitor…

I have to repeat something I have said earlier, and on BBC comments and responding FB idiots who could not find China on a map of Asia, even if clearly marked.

The whole mess is the sole responsibility of China. Ed P and others who have visited Asia may back me on this: wet markets are where the disease began, by crossing species. Wet markets slaughter and butcher all the animals that the Chinese buy to eat, some very different species. Bats, snakes, other reptiles, various different bird species, pangolins, big cat parts, monkeys and probably others. I have seen it published that the source was bats, then jumped to snakes, eventually a jump to humans. Blood and body fluids run to the floors and mix. Wet markets were nothing but a ticking Biohazard time bomb. A species- crossing mutation and a pandemic disease was just a matter of “When”?

Now it is past time for the world to pressure the Chinese into closing the wet markets and to stop eating or using all these totally unsuitable animals for food or “traditional medicine”. That is something that the USA, EU and ourselves should be doing. Meanwhile, their infection and death rates have increased again. The northern cities are another, ‘new’ source, it is said. What is the betting that there are wet markets there?

But the Chinese government say that the new cases are all people who have travelled into the country. Of course.

Plumber has been today and made a great job of fitting new piping and strainers in the dual sinks, says one strainer was missing. He agrees with me that it is all due to past tenant treating the sink as a garbage disposal facility, blocking the pipes with food waste over time. I said that I had cleaned out most  of the gunk, but he just winked, fetched new piping and fitments, fitted all new. He also agreed that the last tenant must have taken it apart and refitted it incorrectly, hence the cross-threaded and insecure fittings. We had to go into another room while he worked of course, but having seen his work I cannot imagine him making those mistakes.

Then he fitted us a new riser bar on the shower, something that we paid for at sign up. He was annoyed to see the invoice for that from the Agent, as he had not been informed about it. So he went back to the factors and got the kit, fitted it. Whole of both jobs very well done and completed inside 3 hours, including two trips to the factors.

Now we can wash pots at the sink again. :yahoo:

Had a cat that slept like that on the incinerator bin at our last Notts. home. She also used to curl up on my Gert’s head, half on the armchair back.

You should swim it Bob. 👍

I ain’t submerging my ricketty old bod in that stuff! Wildfowl and gulls crap in it, it’s full of weed which is long enough to trap shaky old legs. One consolation is that there is nothing dumped in it such as supermarket trolleys and old bikes. Although there is an old fishing cabin further downstream which has been very slowly sliding down the bank for years. It was about 5 feet further up in 2003. Louth is laid back, not much happens in a hurry.

I remember the M55 in summer Steve, last time we went to Llandudno. I took a chance after a stationary 20 minutes and followed another car, didn’t stop following until I got into Llandudno via the back roads. Doubt I will remember that route again though. I would advise your lad to take the NZ option when he can choose. Oz is a lot more ‘foreign’, but he will be a Pom whichever he chooses. EDIT: if he goes to Oz, anywhere near Melbourne, I have a mate from workshop days who runs a Harley-Davidson dealership. I could intro him.

JayCeeDee, at this time of year our roads are usually gearing up for Grockles pouring into Skeg and Mablethorpe. In the winter the roads are quiet, but not as quiet as they are now. Had to go to No. 1 son’s house about 9 miles from us now and take him something by placing it on the deck and then having a Social Distance convo: bit difficult with my poor hearing. Driving those 9 miles I saw just 2 vehicles, both trucks. Coming back, 3 trucks and a police car, which totally ignored me. Maybe he was worried by me singing my head off to Elvis on the stereo.

Will there be a “normal”? I think changes are inevitable.

There is a lot of shoddy build and workmanship about. My gson told me that when on electrician work experience, he was working in a big new estate near Grimsby. He could not believe the number of times he was told the equivalent of “It’ll be fine, leave it like that.” That attitude gets passed on of course.

Managed to get a fast response from the Agent and plumber is informed, probably will not come over the weekend. I have sealed off the main sink and fortunately there is a separate drain to the smaller sink. Same plumber was going to be employed to fit a new shower riser bar. I just found a receipt that shows the Agent’s office was paid for that job. I will show it to the plumber and ask if he can do that. It will be interesting to know if HE was paid for it…

Agent says “not an emergency.” Fine, says I – how would you like to be without a kitchen sink for a few days?

Here in Louth the shops and taxis are getting together. A local and very good greengrocer is offering a delivery service via a local taxi service, place an order and receive fresh veg at your door. Butchers are doing the same. Does not surprise me, Louth is always a close community. And it beats Uber Eats, Just eat and Pizza deliveries, IMO.
