Bob I don’t hate Spurs – but I know a few of them and the thought of them winning it doesn’t bear thinking about I’d never hear the end of it. A lot of younger West Ham fans seem to have invented a rivalry with Spurs which I don’t get at all – their rivals are Arsenal and ours is Millwall (I’d also have Chelsea in front of Spurs – and there’s no real beef at all between West Ham and Arsenal). Interesting hat you say about Arsenal, not the first time I’ve heard of it but not experienced it personally. Probably Herbert Chapman, the Marble Halls of Highbury and all that.

Think they’ll need that luck Bob – Messi seems to have found his mojo again just at the wrong time for LFC.  I recokon an exciting couple of ties whatever the result, with a fair few goals (so expect two nil-nils and penalties!). I watched Ajax last night and was very impressed – especially first half. Not a given they will get past Spurs but as a neutral I don’t mind who gets to the final or wins as long as it aint Spurs.

You are right – however this bloke has shared them (all of them I think) including the last one and also in higher resolution. So further to post above

                    youtube-dl “https://www.youtube.com/user/franck1993ful/videos”

should grab the lot in 720p so much better for mastering to DVD

Bob you can actually save a bit of time with youtube-dl. There’s all sorts you can do with it, but for your purposes I would suggest:

                      1. Download youtube-dl and put it in a dedicated folder e.g. “C:\blake7”.
                      2. For each series on the main page right click and copy the playlist url (“copy link address” in chrome)
                      3. In your new folder (e.g. “C:\blake7”) open a powershell or command window (shift, right-cluck, “open powershell window”)
                      4. type: youtube-dl “http:xxxxxxxxxxxxx” replacing the text inside the quotes with the playlist url you copied in 2 above
                      5. Press enter and the entire playlist (series) will be downloaded in the best available mp4 format
                      6. Repeat for the other three playlists/series
                      7. If your mate has a usb on his telly you could stick them all on a thumb drive
                      8. If it needs to be DVD have a look at Freemake but take care to swerve all the optional software” when you install it

Good luck. BTW youtube-dl is a great tool for other sites including ITV and BBC Iplayer.

My best history teacher was our German language teacher – a WW2 captain who we could distract (from German lessons) very easily by getting him to talk about the war. It was absolutely fascinating because he was very objective and humanitarian and was really upset by some of what he saw. Amazingly most of us passed our German O Level despite spending most lessons transfixed by his history lessons.  That was the most I ever learnt at school and the most interested I ever was in any subject.

yeah if you need to toggle vpn on/off then the microtik or similar is a better bet as you can toggle vpn by switching wifi. I use reserved DHCP addresses on the Asus rather than static IPs on the clients – so no need to reconfigure if you take the device somewhere else, and also takes care of my Roku which doesn’t support a static IP config itself. On the Asus once it is assigned to a VPN you can only change that assignment through the router web interface (clunky and kicks everyone off that VPN temporarily).

For VPN providers, Nord is very good value and yes you can download OVPN files and then the router VPN only counts as one of your 6 allowed connections. I have used Nord and probably will again.

If a certain streaming service is your main reason for wanting a USA connection then worth keeping an eye out for one of the lifetime subs for Windscribe. They have dedicated servers for that service called Windflix for UK and USA.

The general issue (which is getting worse) is that streaming providers are getting better at blocking ranges of IPs that they can tell are coming from a VPN provider. So – example – the ovpn config for NordVPN that works today may not work tomorrow. They (Nord) are very quick to respond and tell you what will work, but still a pain.

I’ve used Torguard for a while now. Their annual (5 devices) charge is $30 ($15 every 6 months), but a dedicated “streaming IP” in the USA is $4/month, making the whole lot $78/year or about £60/year at todays rates – very good value in my opinion. These IPs are static as close to bulletproof as you can get (apart from the one in my mate’s house). Most other services offering a dedicated IP are much more expensive.

Dave for geo-restrictions I’ve played with a few options. First is policy-based routing on the Asus router (running Merlin). That firmware allows up to five outgoing VPNs, and you can assign (by IP address) which devices route over which VPN (by default devices won’t use the VPN).

The second is as per above except with a stand alone wireless AP routed through one of the Asus VPNs and so its own wifi becomes a VPN wifi and you can switch devices to/from the VPN by switching between the router wifi and tha AP wifi

The third is using one of the little Microtik routers (those little GL-Net boxes also work). You can set the Microtik with its own VPN credentials and its own wifi (it connects out through the main router), so again you just toggle between the main router wifi and the microtik wifi to go vpn or no vpn). I have a mate in the states and his own VPN server is L2TP-IPsec which is not supported by the Asus but is on the Microtik (not theGL-Net). So I use the microtik Wifi to connect to him.

One advantage of VPN on the router (and I take your point in general) is that in some cases it gets round issues where an (e.g.) Android app can tell if a vpn app is installed locally on the device.

Bob and it was you put me on to pocket so cheers ! I read mainly non-fiction so I appreciate the feature is not for everyone. As an example though, there is a Wiki page which links to the four individual battles of Kharkov during WW2.  If you open each of the four links in its own tab then click the “epubpress” icon you can create your own ebook where each tab (battle in this case) is a chapter. If you have other tabs open you can exclude them. You also retain the “table of contents” for the individual sections too. Not restricted to Wiki – makes a good job of converting most pages. I made an ebook based on the Wiki stuff and other sources of the Normandy glider landings, Pegasus Bridge etc – came out great. Ideal for killing 10 minutes to half an hour.

Be interesting to see how this goes but don’t want to hijack the thread till the original question is answered. [Been playing with this a LOT lately – both on my Asus router running custom Merlin firmware and more recently with Microtik boxes which are certainly not plug and play but are incredibly flexible, cheap and quite fun for what they do as both clients and servers].
