Dave unless things have changed very recently it’s pretty easy to extract the Sky credentials from the Hub using wireshark. You can then use these on your router of choice. Technically you are breaching terms but I’ve helped several people do this with no issues. Worth keeping the Sky Hub for troubleshooting though
I tried a combined router modem (VDSL) and didn’t get on very well. If you do a lot of tinkering a separate modem is handy as rebooting the router will not cause a disconnect and therefore won’t affect speed.
Budget is a factor as well. I’ve been on the Asus RT-AC87U for a good while and am very happy with it. There’s up to three guest networks on each band (so six in total), very fast WiFi and 4 gigabit ports. Overkill for a lot of people but the lower-numbered Asus models give a lot of the same features.
I’m also running Merlin software, which is based on the Asus official version, but adds a number of handy tweaks, especially up to five OVPN clients, with selective routing based on IP addresses.
I’ve generally been lucky with Asus Routers (except the VDSL combned one). If you do want a combined one I’ve heard and read very good things about the TP-Links. Otherwise and ECI (cheaper) or Huawei modem off ebay is cheap enough. Apparently it is best to try and match up with what is used in your cabinet but I’ve tested both brands on my line (BT Infinity 1 Business) and could tell no difference.
OK
People say I’m crazy, doing what I’m doing
I’m going to sell all my John Lennon memorabilia on eBay. Imagine all the PayPal.
Now that has made me chuckle :good:
Ah makes sense – was hoping for a picture of duct tape and velcro 🙂
Pretty practical looking fixing that. My camera should be here in a few days – I ordered that tripod too – but silly sod that I am have got it delivered to my son’s university digs instead of here…..and he is here at the moment so might be a while before i get the tripod.
Mounting it on a hat makes sense, I’ll have to have a play with what I can do walking around in the summer.
PM – ordered one – out of interest how was it fixed/attached on that cycling video – ta.
That’s really helpful info PM – much appreciated. I will probably bite – CEX looks the best deal still. Cheers for taking the time.
Thanks both. BL, I’ll do an update tomorrow, with luck. If not soon.
Top man – appreciate it
Yeah its pretty blocky but not unwatchable on YouTube. I’m really interested in one of these things…still £90 at CEX….I’m going back to Russia (WW3 permitting) later this year with Jnr2 (and maybe Jnr1) to participate in the yearly battlefield excavations outside Volgograd (Stalingrad). This seems ideal to capture some of that.
Reviews I’ve read have suggested it seems a bit flimsy – be interested and grateful if you could give a review or overview of it if you have a chance – won’t be offended at all if not.
Cheers
I am impressed – take it that is a G5 add-on module. I don’t need one but I want one!
Homeplug with a wifi extender built in has worked well for a few that I’ve suggested it to – particularly to two folks where SkyGo has not been as successful as Sky hinted. External Ethernet if logistics allow is also a solution I used here for a bit and still use at my mum’s.
I would agree if the problem is familiarity – I am lumping the 10 start menu, but it still feels like it is only there grudgingly after the horrors of W8. Still a backward step as a menu for me and the way I use the PC but know others get on OK with it.
Classic Shell as recommended by Dave is on a few PCs of older (even older than me!) neighbours and family members and they all get on AOK with it.
If there are other problems with Windows 10 (beyond familiarity) I think the “lite” tweaks might make them worse in the longer run.
As an aside I’m still staggered how frequently they need to roll out these mega-updates.
John if you are not rushing take a bit of time and monitor ebay. Lots of real bargains on head units come up on there as people upgrade (or put the stock units back in before selling) etc. If it is not worth returning your unit you could offset another buy against selling yours privately (specify bluetooth is flakey).
I’m sure you’ll find something very cheap that fits the bill in days or weeks rather than months.
Bluetooth does some odd stuff….and often leads me “life is too short” decisions to work around/avoid rather than get to the bottom of it.
As an aside car stereo theft round here has gone right out of fashion, can’t remember last case I heard for years – only mention on the basis “is the removable faceplate really necessary”…….if it is still widespread in your neck of the woods fair enough, but if not a cheapie alternative head unit may solve your problem.
I had a pair of these which sounded great. Depends on budget of course.
If you are on a standard repayment mortgage it is structured so the payments in theory stay the same for the full term. This means that to start you pay much more interest than capital, and towards the end you pay much more capital than interest (as the overall sum owed decreases).
Unless you have been badly mugged it is normal – you pay a much higher proportion of interest in the early part of the loan.
In practice it is likely you will remortgage more than once and hopefully repay early – but the initial payments are based on the same payment every month for the full term of the mortgage/

you’re welcome – as an aside I struggled to find a use for it. For a permanent install on a fast USB you can install direct on the USB (like a HDD), and for a portable version, a live linux disk with an extra NTFS partition has worked best for me. The persistent install isn’t really portable as it is tweaked to the system you created it on.
Not knocking it but I couldn’t find a use for it.

NowTV displays well on a PC connected to a TV but as you say remote control is horrible.
I actually find the easiest way to control my windows media PC is to use Synergy from the little laptop that lives on a little table next to my armchair. Won’t suit most though.
Its a shame there’s no nowTV addon for Kodi as Kodi with HDMI-CEC works great, and uses your normal telly remote.
