To be honest I think we have reached the unfortunate stage where we can’t look at the traditional approach of “have they committed a crime”. We can’t apply western democratic logic to this mob. If there is intelligence on 3000 or to suggest that they even sympathise with this ideology then they should be detained. Those not born here should be deported, forgetting any potential issues of their country of birth. Those born here detained – charged if possible and if not detained indefinitely or offered a move to the Islamic country of their choice (if one will accept them). We have been soft, they have seen that we are soft, and they exploit that weakness with tragic consequences. Yes we also need to look at the huge numbers coming in to the country, and why they are choosing the UK over an Islamic country. On both fronts it is clear that carrying on as we are and hoping it will all come out in the wash isn’t working. Time to change and get on the front foot.
We knew plenty about this one Ed – he was on a national TV documentary with an ISIS flag and yet was at liberty to commit mass murder.

……….so not home grown…….and very definitely deportable if any one running our country had an ounce of guts or decency. To my mind there are strong grounds for those who have deliberately let these lot (and the others) stay at large to face criminal charges – it is disgusting how they are failing us. We know who they are – estimates are around 3,000 – and we let them live, thrive and survive.
Ended up watching all of it. Music mainly not my cup of tea (but then I’m not a teenage girl) but still enjoyable – quite moving. Even people I don’t normally like (Robbie Williams) had me smiling. Likewise Coldplay. I’d never heard of Ariana before the Manchester attack – only 23 but seems to be a pretty impressive young lady.
Hearing the mainly young girls singing along just underlined what an evil piece of sh!t the bomber was….and of course his mates in London and all the rest.
Anyone missed it its on the iPlayer – link
….worth watching.
Firstly let me add my gratitude to Lee for helping keep the ship afloat.
Possibility 1: I also know very little about Forum hosting, but I wonder whether the small community and relatively low traffic levels makes this a candidate for one of the free forum hosting options out there.
Since I read the post, I google “free forum” and followed the first link which got me to
http://formerlymm.freeforums.net/
in about 10 minutes….no idea if it is good/kosher/viable and it is certainly add supported but maybe something along these lines could be adequate?
Possibility 2: Given that the site is non-commercial. could something like a limite hostgator plan (I have one) be adequate?
Possibility 3: I much prefer a forum style to Facebook but as a last resort could a Facebook group be a means to keep what is a small, friendly and sociable group going?
Suggesting this as I think the subscription model just won’t work.
I’m all ears as I would hate to see one of the few nice places on the internet go!
That’s a steal. I’m still full fat sky, but having had a play with the youview box in my kitchen (that supports now TV) I’m seriously considering binning it…..biggest challenge will be convincing others who love the epg on sky, but sky q rolling out is of no interest to me and when that becomes standard will probably be when I say tata.
Now TV is excellent from my experience in terms of quality……especially at £2 !
Went to a concert in Hatfield (Hertfordshire) last night (Toots and The Maytals – Jamaican reggae legend for all you headbangers!). Quite a modest scale event – outdoors but at a guess a couple of thousand capacity. Took about 45 minutes to get in, three search stations and two cordons of armed police! Very thorough searching of bags, had to demonstrate mobile phones working etc.
Am guessing this is going on elsewhere, not complaining, just a sign of these times post-Manchester.
Spotify for me. You can get the full year Premium well below RRP via Ebay. Best thing for me is the third party sites where you can find playlists and not have the aggro of deciding what to listen to. My Roberts Radio and Denon Amp also have spotify integration so I can play through those from my phone/tablet/laptop.
I use Google Music (free) occasionally – I did the 4 month 99p trial of the paid version but never used it once.
I have Amazon Prime Music (not the unlimited) and that is fine, use it mainly to download full albums on to the phone. Not an Apple man (aside from work iPad) so can’t comment there.
Even the free Spotify is pretty good, the up-front advert followed by 30 mins ad-free is a good approach. But premium – especially via Ebay is great value I think.
Glad to hear that – a launcher that feels right makes a big difference – and can also hide a lot of manufacturer bloat (e.g. Samsung).
I think the Firefox mobile browser is still very good, and its the main thing the keeps me using the desktop version (which I find is getting slower and fussier year on year).
Not tried Arrow – I use Nova by default but might have a nose next time I’m tinkering
Awful – as I type at least 19 dead and 50+ injured – both will probably rise. Lots and lots of kids involved. Terrible.
I’ve checked the youview box I have in my kitchen. I’m not a BT customer and bought it privately. It is a DTR-T4000. I bought to replace the Sky box that was out there on multi-room – and mainly use it as a radio out there.
It is (as per earlier post) made by Humax for BT, but works with freeview and any ISP for TV, iplayer, Netflix and NowTV etc. The EPG is not bad (series link etc), HDD is 1TB and the remote can be programmed to control the connected TV as per Sky. There is RF loop through (no modulator) and an optical audio out. Only mentioning as they can be picked up for around £70-£80 on ebay. I’m very much under-using the features on it but it is pretty good.
Yep crippling the recording (Sky) is a pretty low trick, they’ve done it since the original Sky+.
I think Sky officially changed their service model with the launch of Sky Q – sky own the box and you only ever loan it now – its never “yours”. On the plus side you don’t pay for service calls relating to the box (since it isn’t yours) – although I have always been able to negotiate free service calls anyway. On the downside I think if you cancel you’ll have to return the box.
I think if you keep the (non-Q) Sky HD box without the subscription – even with freesat from Sky – you won’t be able to record. In that case – if you just like the Sky EPG the DRX595 multiroom box (£15 – £20 on ebay) makes sense as it is play-only and uses much less power than the full HD box (I think its about 7W versus 30W in standby). If you want to record without a sub then the freeview or freesat purpose built boxes make the most sense.
Does it need to be a satellite STB – the Humax Freeview recorders are very nice too if they have a decent terrestrial aerial. Not a huge difference in the channel line up and no need for an LNB or cabling.
For any extras (paid content) they are all covered in earlier posts. The Roku and Fire TV are the most flexible. I’m with Duke in preferring the Roku to the Fire but am actually using both. One thing on the Android boxes, some apps can be fussy with Android over HDMI.
I think Humax make some of the BT youview boxes which can be picked up very cheap on ebay.
DVD Shrink is for copying existing DVD content I think rather than compiling your own?
I thought I posted this yesterday but can’t see it – DVDFlick is worth a look as is AVS2DVD in partnership with ImgBurn mentioned above – its worth getting ImgBurn from Ninite (under Utilities) to avoid the tat that now comes bundled with the main installer.
If I’m reading it correctly then yes you need to author a Video DVD and not just write the files to a (data) DVD. Ages since I did one and the preferred methods are a little involved, I do remember thought that Freemake was a very simple one-stop-shop to do things without much effort. I also remember that its important to opt out of all the “free software” when you install it.
If you have done it correctly then when you look at the DVD in (e.g.) Windows Explorer you will see a folder called “VIDEO_TS”.
I’m just using mine as timer sockets on lamps. More flexible than traditional timers and you can activate or reprogram them from anywhere. One was used during the winter on a small portable heater to take the edge off the cold without heating the whole house up.
Think this is as cheap as they’ve been Duke – £30 a pop when I got mine about a year ago. But yeah I think they are good, and very cool to the touch which is reassuring. They do a dearer one with an energy monitor built in but seemed an odd combination to me. May well get one or two more – glad you like it any road.
I’ve got a couple of these. They work very well. Controllable over wifi or internet. You can do simple on/off, set timed schedules or set an “away mode” where they turn on and off randomly between certain times. All done from their Kasa Android App. There is also a manual override physical button on the socket as well.
I think they advertise them as Alexa compatible but I can’t vouch for that bit.
I have mine now and have had a little play – I’m very impressed. I got a monopod from Amazon (with a spike on the bottom which holds it fine (since the camera is so small and light). I’m still looking for a mobile hat solution, trouble is it would ideally go right on top of your head, some sort of German WW1 helmet with a 3/4″ mnount on top of the spike would be ideal.
Looking at the cost of other devices I think these are good value and for the right circumstances a great way to capture a location.
They enforce pavement parking all round Greater London Duke. My lad got done waiting to pick his brother up from cricket….pavement is about 25 for wide there…but no complaints from me maybe a publicity drive and more marked out bays where pavement parking is safe….zero tolerance elsewhere. I can confirm it is just about zero tolerance now!
