yeah that makes sense – probably why its only £15! Suppose its worth packing for holiday as it goves an extra 1200mAh on the battery but not much else.

      Cheers

I know what you mean – in a similar position with Samsung S5 – no dual cameras but a lot of the same features like the swappable batteries, expandable storage.

Out of interest did you bother with the Camera module – and if so was it worth it? Took a punt for him at £15 but not sure if it is just a gimmick.

The phone is gorgeous though – screen as good/better than anything I’ve seen….definitely keep my eyes open on another. Like Samsung with the G6 “upgrade” LG have taken away features that make it attractive (to me) – seems to be par for the course though aside from some of the chi-phones.

Turn Washingtons spies is a good series on Amazon too. This is about kicking us our rather than the civet war, but to me it’s all the same. Lol. I’m too ignorant of the civet war. But there is a good documentary series on Amazon about it ‘the ultimate civil war series’ , that I watched after I finished Turn. It seems the civil war wasn’t as straightforward as I thought. What does get me, is how they went form a mess to world leaders in a very short time. Got to be some good management went on at some point.

Yeah it seems strange their Civil War ended 49 years before WW1 (if my maths are right) – but still feels like a wild west feel about it. some of the stuff like the first appearance of iron-clad battle ships was news to me as was the first real instance of trench warfare at Petersburg. The whole timeline was something I never thought about really…..like when I think “Custer’s last stand” my head tells me it was all much longer ago – but it was actually post-Civil War. The “crater” bit from the Petersburg Siege I remember from a scene in the film “Cold Mountain”.

I must stop getting interested in new (old) wars…..eats up a lot of time and makes me very unpopular, very interesting though. I think in this one the whole thing – the narrator, the contributors (especially the 104 year old ex-slave lady who reads the poem/death notice) and the music makes it a really absorbing watch.

Thanks Bob – I actually have a BT YouView T4000 (rebadged Humax) in my kitchen and although I don’t use it much it does support Netflix, SkyGo and a few other things. AS I say I don’t use it that much and if I bin Sky would probably keep Roku/Amazon to cover apps anyway.

As it stands people (not me!) using my 4 Sky Go logins is all that is really keeping me there.

Slight diversion – is there much difference between FreeSat and Freeview? I think there’s a few extra channels on FreeSat but do the STBs offer pretty much the same in terms of recording, catch-up etc? Thinking down the line to when I will probably ditch Sky, and will happily ditch the dish if freeview can cover all the same functions. Ta.

On the Sky “lesser” channels the drop in quality is staggering – picture and especially audio – approaching VHS in some cases. Even on the “better” channels the quality of the audio is grim on the US content – I used to assume it was down to poor down-mixing of surround (e.g. DTS) content but even when fed through my AV amp it is still sh!te. Who knows why.

Sky is appealing to me less and less – cricket used to be their saviour for me but I think BT have the Ashes this winter which may well be the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. Sky Q would have been great (if it worked well which for most I know is not the case) a decade ago – but too late now. Never been @rsed about the football except my lot – which as most will know is not going too well.

Gulp….got 4 Samsung Smart TVs – none of them recent enough to be troubled by this, and I have updates set to manual on them.

On the wider issue of smart versus dumb TVs – been discussed before, but I think there is a real distinction between “apps” and general network connectivity (UPNP/DLNA) – the former I have in abundance but rarely use as the experience is better from (e.g.) a Roku or Fire TV – the latter I wouldn’t be without. Using the TV remote to pull up any of my stored content (NAS/Server) and streaming content from phone, tablet, laptop direct to the TV without a chromecast or the like are the two main reasons.

There’s a couple of apps I use behind a US VPN, and one advantage of many Samsungs is that you can set the “smart” region to anywhere you like as long as you have geo-shifted the network connection.

The story makes grim reading regards the support though – fingers crossed haven’t needed it on any of my sets so far which performance-wise have been excellent. Most of the software updates I’ve seen seem to have been taking apps away, or removing features (like flash support for the web browser). Can’t think of any updates that actually improved anything so turned them off.

Just tried Slypheed and it looks to be OK. Just want something light to complement online email and it looks like it will do the trick. The incoming and outgoing settings took a bit of tweaking but not too much (primary email is GMX and their  web client is waful).  Outlook is overkill and Windows 10 Mail has a few niggles – I’ll give this one a little while then it might be a keeper.

Stick to the shed – you need a bit of “no man’s land” between you and the enemy. You can add the tank traps, barbed wire and land mines later:)

I remember that Semi, BL. Keane, Psycho and the 2 Gary’s, Charles and Crosby, scored. Have to admit it was a bad sending-off, never a Red card. Hackett was supposed to be Top Ref, but he made a lot of errors. I have just finished reading Big Sam’s autobigraphy, titled (what else?) “Big Sam – My Autobography” and he has some uncomplementary words for most refs. No, on second thoughts, make that all refs! It’s worth a read, especially if you are a supporter of one of the many clubs he played for or managed. It’s honest and straightforward, also full of some very funny stories, but only goes up to 2015 so doesn’t say anything about life after leaving the Hammers. The aggro towards London teams, began after bad experiences at QPR, involving London Mounted coppers. Queueing on South Africa Road, some of the Forest lads were being pushed against the wall in the tunnel there. One with more mouth than sense, said loudly, “This horse must be a Mare, it has a C*** halfway up its back!” The officer in question shoved the horse into him, he fell and was injured by hooves, taken to hospital. The aggro got worse at the game, a 1-1 replayed draw with 2 disallowed Forest penalties. Fans started fighting, me and mates made our way out and back to the station, well before the final whistle. Every club has its minority of nutters who come to make trouble, Forest no exception, but in the minds of the Forest nutters, after that, all London clubs were tarred with the same brush. It’s daft, but they also believe that all Londoners are Cockneys, which is the same delusion as saying that all Scots are Highlanders. We won the replay and went on to win the League Cup, or whatever version of it was running at the time. Steve’s lot would call it The Mickey Mouse Cup. The FA cup final after the WHU Semi, was a horrible game for us, against Spurs. Gazza should have been sent off for kicking Gary Crosby in the chest, never even received a yellow. The best defender we ever had (Des Walker) of all people, scored an own goal. It just made the nutters see London clubs as the villains again. The pub you mention is the TBI (Trent Bridge Inn) and does a roaring trade during both football and cricket matches. The only time there was ever serious trouble there, was against the worst, most obnoxious fans in Britain: Leeds. They started a fight in there one Saturday before the game, all the Forest lads and the staff left, police moved in and lost it, so they actually chained the doors shut and left them to wreck the place. In the end the Leeds “fans” were fighting each other, all pi**ed and raving. The Riot Squad opened the doors and the survivors (!) were either arrested or taken to hospital. One of my mates knew the landlord at the time and he says they did him a favour, as the insurance paid for doing the place up. Usually that pub is a good mix of opposing fans, with no trouble, but Leeds fans are detested almost everywhere. Personally, after Hammers fans looked after me in 1966 when I was AWOL to watch England win the World Cup, I have nothing but good words for WHU fans. But some Millwall fans are as bad as most Leeds fans.

Bob that final – reasonably sure it was Gary Charles who Gazza nobbled – and Gazza got stretchered off – should of been sent off  – (done his own knee in the challenge which was a shocker) – was never the same player again.

Naturally, West Ham signed Gary Charles when he was an alcoholic and lets just say we got what we expected! Stuart Pearce eventually found his way to West Ham in the twilight of his career and was a superstar.

My last visit to yours was a good while ago now – one all draw early 90s I’m guessing – when Jason “Pineapple on his head” Lee was the centre of attention.

Yes that pub (Trent Bridge Inn) – big beer garden, happy memories.

yeah I reckon you are right – definitely summer toys! Mine will be deployed in southern Russia with average temp of 38-C , so more useful there than England! Even with good weather just surprised how well it works to be honest. Think it was only about 16-C this morning but very clear sunlight which I suppose matters more than the temperature.

Bob remember the TF winning goal against Malmo – was stuck in the back room at home (aged about 14 or 15) listening on the radio – not sure if it was live on telly, but saw Trev’s goal later – something in between a standing and diving header if memory serves

The 1991 semi-final will always be my defining memory of Forest when Keith Hackett shamefully sent off Tony Gale and you done us 4-0.

I was stood on the Holte End at Villa Park that day and had the right hump (with Hackett not you lot).

Had some great away days at the City Ground which makes it a shame that it has gone sour between the two sets of fans last decade or so – real shame.

Can’t remember the name of the pub but as you walk to the City ground – big boozer on the left before you cross the bridge over the Trent (on your right) – had many happy pints in there.

After a Forest first game of the season win* last night Steve, anything is possible. Just be careful how you slip away, don’t upset the Duchess. *We rarely win the first game! Blacklion will be chuffed, it was Millwall.

Always happy to see that lot get turned over Bob! Although I have to admit I do miss us playing them, fixtures are very few and far between but still just about  the only game that gets everyone going – or did at Upton Park anyway – the rest of it like football in general is very sterile these days – especially at our rented digs in Stratford.

Happy with a good start for Forest hope they keep it up – got some Trevor Francis tracksuits from a mush in Shepherds Bush!

Doesn’t seem to be much about at that size. The Sony “Compact” phones are 4.5″ but even the older ones hold their value really well – the Z3 and z5 compact go for similar money to their big brothers (similar specs except lower screen res).

The other thing is the bezel size, a cheap 4.5″ phone with a big bezel might get close in size to a 5″ phone with a smaller bezel, so worth considering the overall size of the phone as well as its screen. At the price point can’t see anything to touch PMs recommendation.

Can’t remember the film but there is one where the Americans effectively crack the Enigma code for us as well thanks to them getting hold of a German Enigma machine from a submarine. And I still remember John Wayne kicking one of our Jeeps to get it going in “The Longest Day”. They can’t help themselves. Very insular country – scarily so when you meet a good number of them abroad.

Duke mentioned “Band of Brothers” which I’ve had in a box set for years – just started it and it is good, but I get the point about filming, and I remember it as well with “The Pacific” – the HD made the CGI much more noticeable.

I’m struggling to think if I’ve seen a film (ever) that took the breath away from beginning to end like “Dunkirk”. A Spanish colleague at work and a friend from Russia have also seen it and left the pictures similarly shaken.

you probably have a web pvr gui if you look in the program list too – saying that I never use it. From that command window prompt easiest way is to find the url of the program on the iplayer website and then type:

get_iplayer -g “http://xxxxxxx” but obviously with your url

You don’t need the quote marks but they don’t hurt.

If you didn’t set an output folder when you installed it, it will be buried away and is worth changing. Say you want to store the videos in “C:\VIDEO” then before you download the tv program type

get_iplayer –prefs-add –output “C:\VIDEO” (with the quote marks).

                                            get_iplayer –prefs-add –no purge (stops a 30 day timeout)

get_iplayer –prefs-add –fatfilename (tidies up filenames)

                                            get_iplayer –prefs-add –whitespace (ditto)

There is a full set of documentation here (note that some functionality like live tv recording no longer works)

Also a support archive here and a forum here.
