I remember having a play with it a few years ago – and also trying RemixOS booting from a USB drive – which worked very well. That projected has also forked and has a an emulator and (upcoming) a mobile version – looks interesting.

Gmail has always been like that – doesn’t care about the dot – if you use it for logins then those sites care, but the mail application has never cared whether the dot was there or not. Can’t decide if that is good or bad but sure it has always been so.

Yes I remember a few high-profile court cases around “card sharing” – I think the rogue boxes poll a card in a legitimate box frequently enough to keep it active via an internet connection, and multiple rogue boxes can poll the same legitimate box. They are still sold either as packages or as “12 month gift” on ebay – who don’t appear to be to fussed about it. I think this concept has been half cracked-down on, and only works for SD channels. As you point out a very murky and dangerous area.

I think on the linux box I’m going to drop the satellite tuner and put another terrestrial in – making recording and watching simpler. As far as I can tell freesat doesn’t give me much that I’d miss, and it will also make the epg simpler. I’ve tried hanging a portable USB 4.0TB drive off the box and it will use that quite happily in place of the internal 1TB – not found a way to easily access both at the same time yet.

The “bouquets” concept on these boxes is great – you can have the channels grouped (entertainment, news, music etc) automatically, do it yourself, and also add internet streams into your own bouquets which appear as normal channels in the epg. There is also an add-in called “TS Media” that makes accessing Kodi addons much easier.

Got the mutant (Linux receiver) plumbed in temporarily in the kitchen – lots to learn but first impressions its one of the most interesting things I’ve bought – incredibly flexible – and its already running kodi, has an epg skin that looks just like sky and has a HDD inside that will record, store and play anything you want. It will stream channels across your LAN to a browser or phone app, and can be fully controlled easily in all manner of ways. Going to be fun.

Went for the Mutant HD51 Dave. Did a bit of research (that shop’s own forum mainly) and plumped for this one – has the option for two tuners in any combination you like (DVB-S2 or DVB-C/T2). I went for one sat and one terrestrial – but they are apparently easy to reconfigure as the tuners are plug and play. They also flash either of he two main builds (Vix or ATV) which is good as this is new territory for me. Reviews of the box seem very good (aside from a cheap feeling remote). Should get it today, but probably not much time to play before the weekend.

Yeah having slept on it still plan to get rid.

I’ve actually ordered I linux-based satellite/terrestrial box, which aside from running all the freesat/freeview channels will also run kodi and all sort of other goodies! Another bonus (which will please everyone else) is that the EPG can be skinned to look and work almost identically to Sky – so no learning curve. You can load it up with your own media (via FTP) as well as what you record, and stream live channels and recordings/media  across your local network. Be fun to play with if nothing else and has been funded by a big ebay clear out of old stuff.

Either that or the YouView DTR4000 will take over from the main Sky box. Since I’ve been playing have realised just how bad quality a lot of the Sky channels are now – if you watch (e.g. C4+1) via Sky then watch the equivalent on freeview the difference is very noticable – Sky is awful by comparison.

One other option is I’ll pay the £5/month extra to get Sky Go extra on my mum’s account (she has everything except sport) and then connect one of the subs up here on the Xbox. That would cover most bases.

They just offered me 30% off my current set up (no Sky Q upgrade which is fine by me) which takes £92 down to £64.40 – and for 12 months not 18…..hmmmmm……

Is the new Cardiff City stadium on the site of the old Arms Park? Not been there but had a few interesting strolls through Cardiff to Ninian Park a few decades ago. Lively times!

Flicked round a few of the games tonight and realised again how utterly sh*te football is in this country. Sanitised, corporate, “family friendly” and crazy expensive. Less and less bothered with it by the week.

Just cancelled. They offered me £26/month discount for 18 months and still the upgrade to the Sky Q box + one mini box free.

Said I would do it if they gave me a second mini installed free they said no. So I said no. Now I know how those ladies felt when they burnt their bras!

They will either come back or they won’t and even if they did would probably say no. Now to break the news to my Sky Go punters…..

….looks like Sky is going. Spoke to them again today and confirmed they have lost The Ashes down under to BT. I will find other solutions for my kin on Sky Go…….and looking at various solutions for me – most likely the DTR-4000 Freeview box but also looking at some Linux freesat boxes that are “flexible”.

My pal came round to start tiling my bathroom today – said he binned Sky a year ago and pays the former sub in to a separate account that now pays for a a holiday each year. Nuff said. Might hang on for a bit if they offer me a discount via retentions but if not then tata.

I know what you mean Dave, mine are not averse to a dabble either. I think Sky have a major issue in that they are no longer the one stop shop for paid content – days gone by they were really the only show in town for paid films, sport etc, and especially for sport you could more or less say if you had Sky you had everything. Now everything is fragmented, you end up having to have 2/3/4 subscriptions to get “everything” (Sky, BT, BoxNation etc) – and still Sky keep upping prices.

Currently swinging between “bin it all together” and “go Sky Q for 18 months then bin it. Just been playing with the YouView DTR-4000 again – really is nice, and with the built in NowTV would allow me to dip in and out of Sky if I felt the need. Tough one.

My setup is based around BT (Business) broadband and an Asus RT-AC87U router, which feeds 4 gigabit switches dotted round the house (home office, lounge, kitchen, upstairs). Spoke to someone else yesterday who replaced wireless to the mini boxes with homeplug connections without issue – so I think I’ll be OK.

I share a lot of the annoyance at Sky, especially hearing that they have not got the Ashes this winter (BT have I think). It is the Sky Go though – my two live away and with a Playstation running the Sky Go app they get a pretty much full Sky experience for no extra cost. The other 2 logons are in use as well, and they all probably watch Sky more than me!

The fact that Q is an 18 month commitment means I’ll probably end up doing it for that term and then think again.

I agree about recording – I never do it – catch-up is easier and often ad-free too (especially Sky Atlantic).

yeah suck it and see I suppose. I currently distribute the main box  (along with Roku, Fire etc) via an HDMI->DVB-T modulator (switched by my receiver). No reason I couldn’t continue to do that if latency is an issue. That is assuming you can split the Q HDMI….more research.

Bloke at works reckons (if I decide to do it) just let the Sky bod set it all up wireless then change it all over to wired myself – a doddle he reckons….and too much aggro convincing the Sky man otherwise.

My kitchen telly is the only 4K one in the house, so wondering maybe out the main Q box there and a mini in the front room and bedroom.  Will have a think over the weekend – only outlay for me would be (maybe) £99 for install of the extra mini-box, but no extra monthly sub.

One thing occurred to me – if you chose the same channel on say the front room and kitchen box, is the picture/sound on the mini-box delayed from the main Q box – guessing it would be but not sure – it would be a bit annoying if you could hear the sound from one box slightly later than the other.

They told me tape 6 and watch a 7th? They said might need new dish and definitely a new LNB (my dish was self installed donkeys years ago so who knows – it is a mesh mini-dish)

yeah thanks Ed – as we have discussed before this is the right solution about 10 years too late….however….given my charitable nature to keep Sky Go active for my kith and kin, it is probably still worth it. They (Sky) confirmed that the four remote (Sky Go) limit remains – although it can be using the SkyGo or SkyQ app on each registered device.

In all honestly I should just ignore it – but the “server” approach is tempting me – especially as I could hang my slingbox off the minibox to extend my remote viewing capabilities.

The offer they are giving me is for the 2TB 4K box, which I don’t really care about, but still (now) want.

                                        Damn technology…..

Great link – thanks Dave – if I take them up I’ll make sure I get the wired solution. Properly arguing with myself now as I really want to get rid (of Sky) but since sons 1 and 2 and a pal abroad are using Sky Go I may bite…

Thanks – this is the bit I’m struggling with (or one of them). I am not on Sky for internet – just TV. So my router is my own (Asus RT-AC87U) connected to BT broadband.

I am sort of getting that if you use WiFi Sky Q uses its own wifi network…..but if I want to wire the whole lot can I have my main Sky Q box plumbed in to my router, and any remote/mini boxes likewise via existing wired switched in the remote locations?

The Sky lady was very much for using the Sky WiFi – whereas me by default opts for wired wherever possible for anything non-portable – especially if it is for streaming.

Could the main Sky Q box (hub?) connect in to my existing wired gigabit network? Almost wish they hadn’t offered now !
