That doesn’t sound right at all Bob – HDMI-CEC settings can do wierd things if you have that function enabled, maybe worth a nose in to the settings on TV and the FreeSat box. If not though there must be something wrong 0 it can’t be meant to be that much of a chore to turn on/off. If you are within the return window I’d be looking at replacing it.

I watch a lot of telly on the phone (Gym, train etc) – and agree it is a very decent experience. TV s a shole is so different now, and one reason I think Sky Q is less and less attractive is that – who needs to tape 6 things at once when you can get the all off catch up when it suits?

Aside from live sport, most of what I watch is stuff that has been recommended to me, nearly always on freeview, and easy enough to find after the fact.

I think the delivery platform is less and less relevant – Sky’s mistake – as the content is dispersed all over the place.  NowTV is an example of something they do well – selling their own content through multiple platforms – Sky Q is an example of something they do badly – a bespoke platform still assuming that people will have Sky as the hub of their entertainment solution, even though they are now one of many shows in town.

Back to the topic, they should run the beer promos alongside the crisp ones – marriage made in heaven.

Duke having checked it looks like I am eligible for the BT sports app free (on Windows or Android, not on STB). I’ve applied ad they say up to 7 days activation – hopefully sooner. The App will do for me as I still have an NUC hooked up to my man telly (I’ve tried and the FireTV is a no-go). It gives you BoxNation too which I’m likely to watch more than the rest – soo good news.

If it turns out to be a non-runner (i.e. I’ve read it wrong) then I’ll look at that SIM – cheers!

Well I’m on BT business broadband (through work) and it looks like I can get the Windows/Android version of BT Sport for free….got to wait for activation but happy days if so….especially if the Android version works on FireTV.

I don’t suppose the blag will last all that long but make hay while the sun shines. Even at full price the £6.99 pass is decent value if you time it right – this weekend for example you could have done it Saturday night and had the boxing, the Sunday EPL football and the Spanish football, plus anything else in between.

For some unknown reason I’m not particularly bothered about watching football at the moment (!) – but I do wish BT did something similar, they would have my business for the Ashes, or they might anyway if I don’t have to sign up for a year.

Its easy enough to change out the old Sky Hub for a different router -have done it for a few people with no issues. the username/password is hard-coded in to the Sky Hub, but can be extracted very quickly using Wireshark. This is the guide I have always followed:

Sky Q I have not tried but it doesn’t look too bad

I like Elland Road even though have had some hairy times up there. I remember going in the pub next to the ground (Golden Peacock I think) which was full of miners, armed-robbers and other assorted giant nutters and my mate ordered a “lager top” – could of heard a pin drop – one of the swiftest pints I’ve drunk.

Have a bit of a soft spot for Leeds (sorry) – as some great games at Upton Park back in the day – and as I say the odd excursion up there. Also my old room mate on my apprenticeship was a White.

If you like your boxing then it is always worth tuning in when Josh Warrington boxes – he is a Leeds fanatic and so are his fans – great occasions.

I’ve got no beef with wireless, my setup is as follows

                    • Asus RT-AC87U router running Merlin firmware (allowing selective VPN routing)
                    • Each gigabit port of the router feeds an 8 port gigabit switch (home office, lounge, kitchen, upstairs/bedrooms)
                    • Wifi Home Networks, Wifi Guest Networks
                    • Ubiquiti exterior A/P serving the garden (and also most of south-east Essex if they had the password!)

I have no performance issues with any devices using Wireless, but for me if you can wire up then why not – I did mine at the same time as running decent coax everywhere for TV distribution (WF100 fed from an HDMI->DVB2 modulator).

Wired just takes any variables like house construction, neighbouring networks out of the equation. I could get by without it but for me it is still the belt and braces way to network for streaming. Been testing the iPlayer 4K tests of Blue Planet – not sure about bit rate but I’m not worried as I’m cabled up (it is stunning by the way) – likewise my Roku Ultra and a 4K tour of the Grand Canyon.

Yeah got a Samsung all-in-on here – older one – SC3205W – very nice bit of kit still, recommended newer ones to people and they are all happy.

That Entertainment pack at £7/month (cheaper if you buy say a 6 month code) is good value – and you can share it across 4 devices with up to two watching simultaneously. It is also very good streaming quality – better than SkyGo extra for sure – I have one of my mum’s SkyGo logons now (my Sky is gone) – quality not as good as Now TV by a distance. I rarely watch it though to be honest and am not missing Sky much at all.

I’m wired all over the house too – its just one less variable for streaming – only phones/tabs/laptop use wireless

There’s a Maplin in Romford – prime location – difficult to see the business model for them now though – must have used it twice tops in the last 5 years. Prime real estate and a bit “jack of all trades master of none” – hope they keep going but like a lot of the high street odds are against them. Debenhams seemed to have sussed the online/highstreet balance but I believe they are in schtuck as well.

ARC is the Audio Return Channel – only really relevant to an AV receiver or sound bar – don’t think it is ethernet related? So I’d use the HDMI cablethey gave you unless it won’t reach.

Regards a DVD recorder – really not worth the effort these days. Better ways to archive and better ways to share.

A lot of people struggle with 16GB internal – even with an SD card as you are limited to what can be moved. At that price point, I’d be tempted to look at 2nd hand. Picked up an LG G5 for Jnr2 as he needed 32GB – the battery life is not great if you use a lot of screen time, but fine in standby, and ore importantly the battery is replacable – meaning you can buy a new one and if needs be have a charged spare at hand. Also the best camera I’ve seen (not been near the more current premium’s mind). If you want new then fair enough, but you can get a lot for your money 2nd hand.

Had it on while listing and packing stuff for eBay, not surprised or bothered, they endless cycle of qualify/fail/qualify/fail left me cold a while back (I was a regular home and awayer back in the day)….when they kept Hodgson after Brazil confirmed the FA cares about the FA and not the England Team. Zzzzzzzzzz.

Cheers Bob – good info. Must admit the one thing missing on my solution is a decent catch-up option. Only way I have found so far is via a kodi addon – which works but I won’t lie is very clunky.

Tend to agree that Sky will need to adapt or fail, given the way viewing habits are changing. Sky seem to develop their products like they are still the centre of everyon’s viewing experience – simply not the case anymore. They are one of many content providers and the way they they want to wrap it up in an exclusive physical viewing platform too will be less and less viable.

Keep us posted Bob – I’ve binned Sky too – but ripped it all out a week early, feels very liberating being rid of it. As per another thread have gone a different way with a Linux Enigma2 receiver, just about set up perfect now (with one DVB-S2 and two DVB-T2 tuners). It won’t (without kodi) do catchup though which is annoying certain folk, but it will (does) resemble the Sky experience almost identically. Replaced the (horrible) remote too – with a One4All Simple 4 – which is excellent.

Out of interest any reason why you went for FreeSat over Freeview (terrestrial) – got both on mine but if I had to chose it would be terrestrial for the free stuff…just seems better on most SD channels. Just curious as I am still tinkering.

I think it might need a new LNB. Sky Q uses a Wideband LNB which is not compatible with “normal” sky or freesat boxes. There  are LNBs which can accommodate old and new (Q) but as far as I know these re not what Sky use when installing Q,

A ton is very steep – a universal LNB is peanuts and to get someone else to swap it over (if you don’t fancy DIY) should be £30-£40 tops….

Very similar approach Duke – I still keep a local PC version as I find it easier for uploading non-phone pics. If I’m away I always take my little compact 30x zoom camera, copy the pics to the my PC/server and upload to flickr/google/onedrive from there. For phone pics my approach is exactly the same as yours.

Very pleased that flickr is still around – got an email that Yahoo had sold it (I think) but hope it hangs on as it is a great service.

The camera is “OK” did some comparisons with Jr2’s LG G5 and its not as good – not as good as the S5 either. In good light the pictures are perfectly acceptable, but compared to the other 2 (especially the G5) it doesn’t stack up. Aside fro that though I love it. The speaker is a revelation – much better than the S5, and phone/data reception is possibly better – at least indoors.

Its a little bigger than the S5 (which I loved!) but just about fits in the front jeans pocket, just have to be careful getting on and off bar stools.

Yeah an overnight charge is how I go too – and the battery in this thing is so big I don’t think I’ll miss the removable battery in the S5. I think that one of the Motos has a similar big battery but their (Moto) model number make my brain hurt.
