Well it is done and early impressions (drive round the block) are very good. The windscreen aerial was a little fiddly (getting the A-Pillar off mainly) but after that a doddle. I’m only using the stock speakers in my car (the unit can support a full boom-boom surround set up) but very noticeable improvement….proof in the pudding will be on runs out of town of course.

Hopefully claw back at least half the cost ebaying the old unit – early days but so far pleased with the upgrade. Not sure how well the adhesive film aerial will cope with cold/heat but we’ll see.

Funny I never bother with DAB indoors – internet radio all the way – but I’m a convert in the car.

My recent dab experience was in a new-ish fiesta and reception on DAB was very impressive. This was an OEM stereo with a roof DAB aerial. Driving to my Mum’s (south coast) there was an occasional drop out (1 or 2 seconds silence) but preferable to the minutes of interference noise I get on analogue. Up to Cambridge and back was immaculate.

I installed the new unit today minus the dab aerial which aint here yet. It was a doddle – as I had hoped just 3 cables to swap over like-for-like. Hoping the aerial install is as easy – cable route looks OK down the trim and across the back of the glove box.

Interesting about the USB issues – always use my ciggie lighter for charging as I have a nano-usb permanently sat in the USB slot on the unit. Don’t use aux in as I am one of the lucky ones with no bluetooth problems. I did notice when I was looking at DAB adapters (for existing non-DAB stereos) that they all recommended using aux-in for best results – which makes sense.

Might have a go at the aerial tonight after work but common sense says wait till daylight tomorrow.

Thanks Bob – I won’t need a support bracket – this one, the one it replaces and the original Skoda OEM are supported by 4 torx screws behind the trim. The Pioneer DAB is physically the same size as the outgoing Pioneer non-DAB and the back connections look the same aside from the extra DAB antenna connection (one of the reasons along with cost I picked the Pioneer). The hands free mic (wired behind the side trim and fixed above the mirror) from the non-DAB can stay hopefully.

If the windscreen DAB aerial is no good (reviews of these seem generally positive)I’ll probably go the whole hog and get a proper one fitted (by someone who is more confident about drilling a hole in their car roof than me!).

Planning to fit the stereo tomorrow, and the DAB aerial tomorrow or Friday depending on what time it turns up.

BTW many of the Android systems that advertise as “DAB” are actually internet Radios which are only “digital” when they are online (via your phone or an in-car internet system). Not DAB at all really.

Timing is good here as I have just bought one. Yep the double DIN is just the physical size. I’ve always ignored DAB for the car but having a courtesy car recently (after pranging mine on a bollard in a car park) I was very impressed with the DAB for (a) choice (b) signal compared to MW on the drive to my mum’s and (c) quality on talk channels.

Having done a bit of research (haven’t fitted mine yet) – a few things to bear in mind are:

            •  quite likely you will need a new aerial. My new unit has separate antena connections for AM/FM and for DAB
            • New aerial if needed can be a full monty replacement (probably need a bigger hole drilled in your roof), a magnetic external antenna – or a windscreen “film” aerial (example) which is what I am going to try
            • probable you’ll need a wiring harness to suit your particula car (Halfords or ebay).

I’ll let you know how it goes, have the stereo but not the aerial yet. Incidentally if you need to fill a double-DIN slot and find a suitable single-DIN unit there are nice adapters available that give you an extra cut-away storage space in the lower half of a double-DIN cavity with the single-DIN head-unit in the upper half.

As Steve says the CD slot is pretty redundant, all my music is on a nano-USB and there is also aux-in and bluetooth. I’ve gone for this one which replaces a similar (Pioneer) non-DAB and hopefully will use the same wiring harness/adapter, the existing aerial for AM/FM and the windscreen antenna for DAB. HEre’s hoping….

Well that’ll teach me to read it all before I post 😉

From memory I think one big breakthrough was that ze germans weren’t overly thorough in with the encryption of the daily (Enigma) code change notification, so while they changed the almost-uncrackable wheel settings every day, the protocol they used to send these settings was nowhere near as robust.

In any case no surprise that today’s tech can rinse yesterdays.

This side of the war is just as interesting as the military though, painful decisions around letting some convoys get sunk (and possibly the bombing of Coventry)? to hide just how deep we were in to the Nazi ciphers.

Pah – that looks like the nancy-boy three-wheel Army Enigma – not a patch on the 4 wheel Navy version. Child’s play (I’m joking of course).

Apps2Fire has not worked for me with Kodi for a few weeks now….returns an error. Not sure if it’s just me but adblink is an alternative. You have to get the apk on your pc (easy enough) but it is an easy program to use

                  For adblink

for grabbing apk (any apk not just Kodi)

She’s only a nominal Head of State Bob with just about zero power. The real elected head-of-state (although indirectly I’ll admit) is the PM and look where that has got us over the years.

Republics are boring, and the only thing of any historical interest in them is generally pre-republic.

I think you underestimate the pull and value of the Royals – a subjective calculation – been to Russia a couple of times and my associates there are very much neo-Soviets, but all love our Royal Family (and Winston Churchill) – mad but true.

I’d be worried if the monarch had any power, but as an excuse for an occasional national knees up and dragging a few tourists in – I say “as you were”.

Think you are a bit pessimistic there mate – returning things for exchange/refund/credit is getting easier not harder – been genuinely surprised and impressed at some of the service I’ve had recently from Currys and B&Q (and the Argos ebay outlet) in that respect. Always worth a try before you do anything drastic – they are very aware of the influence of online reviews and feedback these days.

Your spot on, while doing the test at first glance it looks like a US ip, but on close inspection, it warns chrome on android (amongst others) is leaking your actual ip too. Interesting. I only use it for tricking The footy that is live in the US, which works (for now), but I think I’ll have to have a play with other browsers.

Firefox for Android can run the Web-RTC addon – and is/was always a good mobile browser. If Quantum (mine has updated today) perks the desktop up too then happy days – I’ve always preferred FF over Chrome (usability rather than performance).

I’m fortunate enough to have an ex-pat mate in the Sates with a uber-internet connection, so for me the only issue with 3pm Saturday is what you have to watch – not whether you can watch it! In return his missus gets Strictly!

On Web-RTC, no expert but I believe it is a per-browser vulnerability/feature that allows your real IP to be detected even if you are on a VPN. I first found out about it when I tried http://www.doileak.com/

Quite enlightening as to how much the VPN can do, and how DNS leaks, Web-RTC and other factors can mean you are not “hidden”. Worth running the test and seeing what it picks up.

Web-RTC can be turned/off disabled in Chrome desktop, but not (I believe) Chrome Android, which means unless your VPN provider specifically handles Web-RTC (some can I think) then Chrome is not a good choice for mobile VPN.

I’m drifting back to firefox…will have a look at Quantum but the mainstream version seems to be perking up.

Never really bought in to Chrome (although I switched to it when FF got painfully slow) and it (Chrome) seems to be getting worse. Always found FF mobile (Android) to be excellent – if the Desktop can get parity then happy days.

As a bit of an aside, Chrome Android can’t (I think) turn off Web-RTC so is a no-no for VPN. As another aside Opera (mini) for Android is excellent for downloading.

Yeah I thought it best to give the bloke the actual unit to measure up himself – and no need to board up, the unit was out less than an hour and is now back in until the new one is made. So all in all looks like I lot less fuss than I was expecting! Cheers.

Yeah we got him at the back end of his career but what a player he (still) was. I remember for a while he played left-half for us with Julian Dicks as wing-back just in front. Wouldn’t have wanted to be a right winger in those days.

Bloke was a legend for club(s)) and country, I remember for England against France when Basil Boli nutted him and cut his head open Pearce just shrugged, and took a free kick minutes later that rattled the bar. And of course the penalty vs Spain at Euro 96. For us I remember he played against Spurs in an FA Cup QF (that we eventually lost) – his ankle was swollen like a balloon from the previous week but he still played and stuck in a trademark free kick. Proper, proper player.

I must admit I think West Ham is as good as over – the move to Stratford has killed it for me and for many. Still my team, but breaks my heart when I see that ground on TV – not been to a home game since Palace last season and doubt I will go there again, just a few away games for me now when spare tickets crop up.

Haha yes been better if it happened in a heatwave but…..plan is remove the current unit (with the one remaining pane of glass), take it to the local repair man down the road who will measure it accurately on the spot, then I’ll bring it (the old one) back and reinstall, wait for the new one to be made up, go and pick that up and install that in place of the old one – so should only be windowless for an hour or so….that’s the plan anyway!

Actually Wasbit is right – I can remove the glass unit (the double glazed bit) and leave the actual fanlight frame in place – no need to remove the rivets. Been to see the local bloke again who will bake me up a new glass unit to slot back in to the frame. Me making it more complicated than it needed to be – he’s got a bit of matching glass (amazingly) and reckons £25 – result!

I hope you had a good snooze!

HDMI-CEC is a feature that allows you to control other (compatible) devices with your TV remote. This can be handy if for example you are running a kodi build on a Raspberry Pi – as you boot straight in o kodi and use the TV remote to navigate around on the Pi.

It can also be useful in other circumstances (maybe basic control of a DVD or Blu-Ray with your TV remote), but it can also be a right pain in the @rse……not sure if it would cover your symptoms, but I’ve had cases of the feature (HDMI-CEC) causing devices to switch other devices on or off when you don’t want that to happen.

If the feature is implemented on your TV and soundbar it would be worth disabling it everywhere and then see how things go. IF all is well and you don’t miss anything leave it off, if not then you can adjust the feature one setting at a time (and at least you have an “everything works” reference point).

If none of that makes any difference I think something is wrong, either in set up or something is faulty as I can’t believe you should have all this grief. My Mum has a Toshiba soundbar with a Samsung TV and Sky HD box and it all plays together very nicely.

                                            Good luck any road!
