What usb device are you using and probably silly question but are the drivers all installed and showing OK in device manager?

VLC and many other free/paid programs will do what you want – as long as the capture device is installed OK.

One question, is a powered sub and an active sub the same thing ?

Yep same thing – and the fact that it is powered means it is using leccy all the time it is on – and it won’t switch off with the amp (as its on its own power supply).

You can get subs which sleep until there is any sound to output (sort of super-standby) which means you can just leave them turned on (normally deaerer though). Also subs with their own remote so at least you can turn them on/off without getting up!

Oh yeah – never considered games as it aint my bag. My advice would be patient on ebay and you’ll get a good deal on an active sub. I can imagine on a game like that the sub would come in to its own. I remember watching “Downfall” before I got shut of mine and it was like being in the bunker with Adolf!

It can seem a bit of a minefield Duke, but you have made a sound choice with the Onkyo – assuming the other speakers are compatible) it will probably give you an option to set up without the sub – that’s how I went and never regretted it.

Subs I find are good for action films but not great for normal TV or music (or neighbours). That passive sub is a non runner with your Onkyo – but not necessarily a bad thing – and ebay is swimming with active subs as people upgrade if you still want one after you try without. My setup now is a Denon AV receiver, Q-Acoustics fronts, Gale centre and rears, and no sub. It all plays very nice once set up. As long as the bits and bobs are compatible there’s lots of flexibility – the Onkyo may come with a Mic you can use to autocalibrate everything, but if not it will definitely give you a lot of options to get it all set up how you want.

Main thing to be sure of with the sub is whether it is active (has a mains plug) or passive (just the speaker wires). Your Onkyo will almost certainly need an active sub. Guessing if the one you have lined up has a phono connector it is almost certainly active but worth checking.

[A lot of the bespoke 5.1 DVD systems will have been provided with a passive sub – so there are plenty of those floating around]

they may be fine (quality is subjective) but on the back should show impedance in ohms. The receiver will be very good don’t worry about that bit – if the speakers are compatible (impedance) then just listen and see what you think.

Good thing is you can (if you want/need) upgrade speakers in installments. My original fronts are now my surrounds after I got a good deal on new stereo fronts. I bought a centre off ebay to replace the original too. I live quite happily without a subwoofer (so 5.0) – and most receivers let you choose to include/exclude. I’m in an end terrace an shuddered (neighbours) every time the sub “boomed”.

Onkyo make good gear Duke – but penny to a pound you’ll want better speakers sooner rather than later though! Enjoy either way….but check the impedance of those speakers versus your new receiver.

Be careful with impedance matching – a lot of bespoke surround systems use all sorts of impedances. A lot of more modern amps and receivers will cope with anything between 4 and 8 ohms, but cheaper units may be tied (probably at 8 ohms). From memory using 8 ohnm speakers on a lower rated (e.g. 4 ohm) amp is OK (ish) but 4 ohm speakers on an 8 ohm amp is a no-no (or the other way round!).

I’d also agree that the speakers you have in place a probably quite poor, and won’t do a new amp justice. I look at replacing them. Ebay is full of real bargains. Probably get the whole lot (amp/receiver and speakers) for not too much.

Yeah pleasantly surprised Saturday Bob. I found a means of watching the match (cough) – and thought we were excellent, fully worth the points – and that Arnautovich can really play (when he feels like it). Match was delayed an hour (or 2 pints on) due to a power cut in Stoke – my mate went up on the club coaches so was OK, I bet a lot of others had grief with pre-booked trains and spent the journey home swerving the ticket inspectors.

Didn’t see any of the other matches, but looks like Mr Moyes is making a real positive impact and have to give him credit for that – 7 points out of 9 including games against Chelsea and Arsenal. We have a run of “better” fixtures in the new year that could see us pull a little clear – or get right back in the mire – who knows! Arsenal away in the League Cup tomorrow – Geordies at home Stratford on Saturday.

By the way – regards the SWP – they have changed tack, no more spotty college lecturers selling their paper outside tube stations – they have cleverly shifted their approach and use “anti” (Fascism, Nazis etc) as the message rather than their main “pro” (Internationalist Marxism)

You have to give them a lot of credit – in the last decade can you remember any mainstream TV or Newspaper even mentioning the “far left” or “left wing extreme”? Nope.It is as if there is only one extreme – the right.

The fact they have been forgotten about is a testament to their success – they are more active and influential than ever

When you see an EDL or whatever march reported they are reported as “far right” (fair enough) but those countering them are inevitably driven by the SWP and are given the more cuddly title of “anti-fascist protestors”.

It is a sound strategy from them (SWP) as it hides their agenda behind the message of anti-racism/fascism which at a glance we would all support.

Truth is though, the far left (including the SWP) massively outnumber the far right, they are just better at what they do. They haven’t lost influence – the opposite  – they now stage manage “anti-fascism” – using it as the left jab in their assault on democracy. the right cross will come (they hope) when we are all softened up enough).

the far right in this country are thick and obvious – the far left are clever and discrete.

I think we (UK) are/were by nature a Labour country and I mean by that what Labour should stand for. Not the opportunists like Blair or the delusional Marxist/Student idealists – more like a society where we care about each other as well ourselves and our families.

I’d agree with the opinion that Thatcherism made us greedy and selfish. Blairism more if the same even if he dressed it up different.

I’d also agree that we will have a Labour government soon (sooner than you think maybe Bob).

Harsh fact is though, that generally when the country goes properly tits up – it under Labour. IMF in 1976, then unions killed their own government to let Thatcher in 1979, and then they had their hands on the steering wheel in 2008 for the latest disaster (no more boom and bust…..oh)

We’ll get a Labour government very soon, they will f*ck everything up (even more) and then who knows what. Tories again probably (repeat to fade).

PM from memory you have the same mini dell as me (3050)…if you want to wipe and reinstall fine, but you can use MCT to update without reinstalling… just done the fall update on mine …plug the MCT usb in and launch setup.exe (while windows is live)…. you’ll probably need another blank temporary usb drive plugged in for temporary storage but it will tell you if you do…it then updates, keeps your apps and all relatively painless.

The MCT has got me out of jail on (a) a Windows tablet with only 32GB storage and (b) another PC that just didn’t like the Fall update and kept failing.

Took me a while to find out that you create the MCT USB, but don’t boot from it – instead plug it in and just run “setup.exe” – this seems to be the only way to use temporary external storage if you are low on space. Why the “normal” update won’t let you use an external HDD/Flash Drive/SD who knows?

Have a feeling that Windows 10 is starting to get messy. Everything update-wise used to just happen – still does on some machines, but getting to be a chore on others.

Amazing specs for a phone! I still stick to a £200-ish budget – mainly as I am so clumsy but also because I don’t really need top specs, but if I had £430 lying around would be sorely tempted.

Driven for an hour and a half or so with mine – on high def settings (overkill) and it was about a 7GB file (saved to my SD card but you can save to internal memory. I think you only need to upload the file to get the GPS overlay – from memory I tried once out of interest but not something you would need as standard (I wouldn’t have thought anyway). I’ve not tried the lower res settings as I’ve got a half empty 128G card,  but I’ll try to remember and try some different settings out on my next run. This has now made me wonder how it is at night – which I’ve not tried either and will need to test.

The default split (every 2 minutes) beeps and drives me potty – so set it to 30 minutes but you can set it to pretty much anything and can probably turn it (the beep) off.

Ed you have half a point with that (Irish border) – but the open border will not include the residency implications of “Free Movement” (an understated term if ever there was one).

Why though do you mention the far right and not the far left (ironically united on the referendum) – you don’t get much more far left than the SWP – and for them immigration was not even the issue at all – in fact they don’t even recognise international borders – they are Marxist Internationalists – but you are not digging them out even though they almost certainly outnumber the far right in this country…..why is that?

The far right link is just cheap, easy, lazy and just plain wrong. A look in the other direction woudn’t do you any harm.

Bob your examples may be correct -I’m sure they are but Brexit wasn’t a right/left issue. Corbyn in private is almost certainly “leave” by all accounts – maybe for different reasons but he is old Labour who were always anti until Kinnock started wetting his beak.

The Socialist Workers Party – who spend every waking minute protesting about anything and everything – specially “Fascists” – campaigned to leave. They are now campaigning against a Soft Brexit (on the grounds that it keeps the single market).

George Galloway campaigned to leave. It is not a right/left argument….please don’t get sucked in to that trap by those who want to paint “leave” as far-right – or at least check with the SWP first ;). There are idiots of every persuasion, but cheap shots (and I absolutely do not mean your good self) at people who hold a different opinion don’t help anyone.
