Think thats the quickest I ever clicked on a thread! Cheers – ordered! They have their Best on in my local, tried a few others, looking forward to this selection.
well I’ve just gone back to look at it and it looks like W10 has decided to upgrade itself – I’m not sure succesfully – blank screen apart from little spinning circle at the bottom – been like that for an hour. All his data is on a separate physical hard drave so a reinstall is very possible.
I’ve also found a bootable BitDefender iso on their site and have created one (its MBR – system has been upgraded from W7). I’ll give it a while and then I think tomorrow night will reinstall.
ta.
I’ve got an Echo (original) and love it – got one for my mum (84) and she loves it too.
On Smart Watches – I have a semi-smart watch (this) got it for £95 in a flash sale at Amazon UK. I mainly wanted it because the built in GPS can do around 20 hours, the watch (with GPS off) goes for 2 or 3 weeks.
Its not Android, but has Android and IOS apps, it does as much as I want fitness wise and basic smart stuff (notifications from whatever apps on your phone you enable). I run (a bit) and walk (a lot) and the app is very well implemented for looking at your route/pace etc.
It lacks integration with stiff like Strava and Google Fit (coming supposedly) but even as a stand alone system (watch and phone) it is good enough for me.
If you want a genuine Android Smart Watch I looked at the Huawei Watch 2 (price fluctuates a lot) and loved it – but the GPS (3 hours-ish) was a deal breaker. If your not arsed about GPS it is a lovely smart watch.
I nearly bit but I’ve got power banks coming out of my ears now! All the family are stocked so (unlike me) managed to resist. Aukey stuff is decent from my experience though – this was an absolute steal.
Can’t see how to edit a part, so.. Any thoughts on the WD my cloud?
If you are going for a NAS “personal cloud” honestly get a Synology. Had a WD and a Seagate and they don’t even come close. As posted my Synology was OTT for my needs but what a bit of kit.
or a cheapo office 365 personal sub from ebay 1TB online storag eincluded….normally stackable for a few years too..added bonus of a full MS Office package.
Bear in mind that witha 5 port you are only gaining 3 ports net. One port on the sky router and one on the switch are taken up interconnecting the two – so with a 5 port switch you would go from two usable ports to five – for me an eight port makes a lot more sense if not for today then tomorrow.
Sorry to hear about the set back Bob- hopefully only temporary (sure it is – and good on yer granddaughter for chipping in).
Great news Bob – good read that – and of course good luck 😉
Bob likewise glad the op went well. I think you’ve made a good decision on the audio setup. Best to you and yours.
There is a “line” in stereo connection on the back of the pioneer – a 3.5mm to twin phono cable like this should be able to get your TV playing through the stereo.
Not sure what the outcome will be – the pioneer is probably not optimised for TV viewing whereas the soundbar is – suck it and see though. Is the idea to (ideally) get rid of the soundbar and replace it with the pioneer?
One draw back would be that you won’t get the soundbar’s simulated surround sound options with the pioneer (straight stereo).
The “single device” for doing TV and music is the AV receiver, but generally not cheap and may well be overkill.
wish that was true Bob – West Ham were the team lumping it yesterday, any football was played by Shrewsbury. I’m afraid that was a fairly typical “West Ham Up North Away Performance”. Be interesting to see what a 12,000 crowd looks like dotted round the Olympic Stadium for the replay!
Up the Forest Bob – great result…..and sounds like a decent game to cheer up anyone who had to watch my lot 0-0 at Shrewsbury beforehand!
Ed I don’t think the HDD will be hanging off the pi – it will be hanging off the router – and if its a 3.5″ drive it will have its own PSU in any case (ref the shortage of mains sockets).
Router NAS-from-a-USB-drive solutions usually perform well enough for light use and I include home file serving as light usage. But I don’t recall one that allows access from the internet. That brings a whole raft of potential security issues and that leads me right back to the Synology. Drive redundancy? Well you must have a backup whether you do or you don’t. In a business solution you want continuity of service, in a home scenario I’d say that a few days without access is not going to be a deal breaker. Plus bear in mind that with Synology Hyper backup there is a utility that allows you to explore the backup files from a PC should you need to get hold of some files desperately. The other solution you could look into is another Pi running Tonido Tippon put me onto Tonido and I did use it for a while, until I go the Synology…
Dave my Asus allows access to theUSB files via the internet using FTP. And ES File Explorer can add the FTP share as a resource and stream quite happily over the net. I did a TP-Link for someone last year and I’m sure I set that up the same way. My Asus runs Merlin firmware but I think the featue is in the stock firmware as well. FTP can be clunky but with the right client (e.g. ES it is just another folder – takes a bit longer to load but then plays fine).
Edit: Sorry quoted wrong post!
I would vote synology as well – different league. Only got rid of mine as it was overkill for me…..and I think a NAS may be for you too.
If your router has a USB port you may well be able to connect your 1TB drive to it via a USB caddy and serve the media from there. That is what I do, and for media only (so no real security or backup concerns) it works fine. Some routers just show the drive as a Network Share, others have a built in DLNA server. Your Pi should work with either/both.
If your router doesn’t offer a USB port, you may want to consider spending the cash on a router upgrade (maybe a TP-Link mid-range model). The router may well bring other useful new features too.
If you have grander plans for the “NAS” than just media then 100% I would go for a synology, if not it (dedicated NAS) is not the only way to go.
I don’t twitter either but DM is Direct Message (like a PM) rather than a tweet – if you have tweeted any or your provate info I would try and edit/delete. I think that little envelope bottom right of the tweet is the DM button (but a tweeter can correct me if I’m wrong)
Yeah it will definitely need drivers – there should be (have been) an indication when you first plugged it in to your PC (drivers installing or not found) – there is a chance that Windows supports it natively for basic capture, but you can chack in device manager – look for any unknown devices or devices with an exclamation mark. (Windows-R then type “devmgmt.msc”)
I generally use VLC for capture – Media->Conver/Save->Capture Device
The Easycap device wasbit mentioned I have used before and it worked fine. For the sake of a few quid and may be worth it given that you will have it for keeps and it will come with drivers/software. I use a Hauppauge device which can be picked up very cheap on ebay (make sure you get an analog or hybrid version).
If not though, then your loan device and VLC (or something) should work fine once it is installed (drivers) correctly.
Once you have captured (normally in avi format) you can use a program like DVDFlick if you want to get it on to DVD
Thanks for the link, shame about the Mag. There was a ‘golden period for tor tech mags from the 70s (Byte Mag, PC Plus etc) through to the early noughties but then the bottom slowly dropped out. Maker mags (Raspi etc ) seem to be soldiering on but it seems that no-one and no journo job is ‘safe’ in today’s environment.
Yeah air of inevitability about it all. Interesting to see that books are fighting back (and possibly winning) against kindle/ebooks but mags are in the”real-time” market and they don’t stad a chance. Still miss my MM weekly installment – the CPC catalogue is the only physical thing (books aside) I read now.
