Duke you are so right – press stories are written before the event, recycling old facts and myths.
I used to do a lot of away games with England and they were generally enjoyable – you learned who (i.e. clubs) were good lads and who wasn’t. Lower league teams made up a huge proportion of the England support (maybe still do) – I would say many more northern than southern and we always got on very well with them. From top flight clubs Chelsea in particular would have a lot of fans – some were OK but many many of them just w*nkers – we used to laugh at them but they would pick on smaller and younger groups of (England) fans and generally try and lord it.
Not bothered with England home or away since 2002 as the experience got worse. We were in Slovakia and had to help out a young Asian lad – and England fan from Leicester who was getting threatened (by Chelsea) for (a) being a P-word and (b) not fitting or integrating ….the bloke was over there supporting England! You always had these types – sorry to single out Chelsea but they used to sing our National Anthem giving the Nazi salute. It got tiring and depressing and I though “what’s the point”. It has just become an outing now for wannabes and (as you say) old men.
Also I have remembered that poxy band that plays those awful dirges all game – kills any proper atmosphere and another good reason for not going.
I’m really not sure on the aggro front. Russia hooliganism seems to be different – often politically aligned – and therefore politically controllable. If that is the case it is possible that they will be told to “stand down” while Russia showcases itself to the world.
It (aggro) is also focused in certain cities (mainly Moscow and St Petersburg) – that’s not to say they can’t travel but Volgograd (England’s first location) is not one of the aggro cities.
England haven’t had a travelling organised hooligan (as in fighting) following for many years – just p!ssed up idiots who like to sing and act like hard cases but are in fact the opposite and a complete embarassment in every way. If they embarass themselves in Russia I think they’ll have more to worrky about from from the coppers than Russian hooligans.
As posted on another thread – interesting country to explore – just not for football.
As much as I despise that mob I do have to roll my eyes at who is and isn’t allowed to enter or stay in the country. Hamza for instance – incites hatred and murder, gets a free council house. This bloke ploughs in zillions and can’t get a Visa. Not saying he should or not – just that given how porous our borders are it is is a little ironic that we are excluding someone who wants to contribute and seemingly welcome/tolerate those that want to hurt or bleed us.
Saying all of that if it ends up with Chelsea gettin ****ed I take it all back 🙂
Agree Bob – if you can (and it suits logistically) then for me a direct digital Opticl/Coax link beween source and speakers will be unbeatable. I don’t think John is concerned about TV/Video so sync not as issue now – but belt and braces, future-proof etc.
Come on Bob get off the fence mate ?
Agree Ed – was basing on my reply on John’s orginal question about thumping DJ bass. There’ll be a decent solution anways (wired or bluetooth).
I’ve got a little BT speaker (about the size of a jar of mustard) and amazed at what it can do. Have a wired logitech 5.1 setup on the bedroom telly and it is (as you would expect) chalk and cheese.
Insticnt tells me if you can get digital audio out of the PC and into the speakers (optical or coax) then I think that will trump bluetooth, which will be limited by bandwidth. It all depends on your budget and your lug-holes. Stereo bluetooth speakers come at a premium as well.
If speaker placement is an issue then of course bluetooth wins hands down, but for me if you can get a digital optical/cable feed to the speakers in the desired location then that is how I would go. Each to their own of course.
yeah sorry reading it again I missed John had a transmitter too – was thinking he was pairing the headphones to the TV directly. On your point – I think as you say the headphones connected directly will generally mute the TV speakers. Note to self – read posts more carefully.
It is a shame TV manufacturers haven’t taken on the Roku option of headphones connected to the remoter control.
Not so sure with a TV – neither my 2013 Samsung nor 2017 Sony will pair with any bluetooth headphones I’ve tried. Searching on the forums (samsung and sony) it seems the only way to get bluetooth i to get a transmitter connected to the headphone socket on the TV which is clearly pants. May vary by make but unfortunately for me is a non runner. Apparently to do with the bluetooth profiles implemented (or not) on the TVs. The bluetooth is intended for keyboards and the like I think.
Great if it works for your TV though.
No problem John there are some very decent speakers geared at PCs – either stereo or 5.1 (maybe 7.1 now). Personally if its for music I’d go for decent stereo speakers (maybe high end creatives) as surround sound never suits music for me…..its for TV/Films. Have a look at the creative T20s or T40s – and if you decide to bite go somewhere like Amazon where returns are hassle free if you are not happy with the performance.
John the PC sound card output (on board or PCI/PCIe) needs active speakers (i.e. with their own power supply). You can run speakers in to an amp that feeds conventional passive (no power supply) speakers but then of course the amp needs a power supply instead. All depends if this is a one off set up (PC only) or you want to connect other sources (radio, CD,MP3, TV, etc.). For PC only look at Creative and Logitech set ups – good place to start at least. Beyond that it is “how long is a piece of string” a you get in to amps, receivers etc.
Could it be the date/time is wrong in BIOS rather than Windows – if you have checked that ignore me but woth a look.
Agree with all of that Bob. Where it (the Islamic paedophile rape gangs) hapens though it SHOULD be reported – responsibly of course – with an opportunity for those who represent the decent majority of that community to respond/condemn/react. You can’t hide anything these days and attempts to do so will cause more harm than good.
He seems to float about from one group to another. Most recently has latched on to the FLA (Footbal Lads Alliance) – an “anti-extremism” group that you probably have never heard of but that has had several massive (tens of thousands) demos in London and elsewhere with almost zero coverage from mainstream media.
Whatever he represents as an individual though, there is a huge case to anwer with regard to the Islamic paedophile gangs – their victims are selected specifically as non-Muslims and there are several example (Bradford, Rotherham among them) where attempts to report on or expose them have been supressed by the police as “not helpful”.
I have not got the time of day for him but the reporting (or not) of these protests – along with the language used does question the impartiality of the BBC and wider media. I’ve got no problem with far-right groups being identified as such – but the far-left groups that turn up the protest against them or at the world in general are given the warm and fluffy title of “anti fascist protestors”. Doesn’t take much digging to see that they are as far-left as their targets are far-right.
The media are in no way consistent or balanced on stuff like this and that is wrong in my opinion.
Yes Richard all the best to your wife and family.
Huge factor is the location of the tournament. You are pretty much guaranteed that a European team wil win in Europe and a South American Team will win in South America.

I suppose you could say it has to end sometime or that parts of Russia are Asia rather than Europe so who knows.
I disagree with Bob on Belgium, I think they have one of the best collections of players but not the best team (as I posted in another thread a bit like Holland of old).
Germany for me.
John at the bottom of that link you can get ebay to call you back. If it needs youto pick a listing just pick any other one. When they ring you back explain everything and see if they can help. I’ve noticed one case recently where ebay and paypal now try and refer you to eachother – but in this case as there’s been no payment it is an ebay issue for definite and they may be able to help – worth a (free) phone conversation anyway – either with the second chance offer or reactivating the listing
I would have thought you should be able to offer a second chance John – I would contact ebay to check:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/home
Scroll to the bottom of the page for contact
I had something similar with a camera and managed to get a second chance offer out.
Duke I thought he was a gooner? I know his brother is Villa, and (most importantly) Her Majesty is West Ham – not heard about Harry and LFC – but agree seems a decent bloke to me.
What has Harry done to make you think that way out of interest? I know dressing up as Hitler was’t the cleverest but would suspect most of us have done daft things in youth? Thought he was a fairly well regarded Royal so if I’ve missed anything be interested to learn.
