Thanks blacklion It’s for a PC, it’s a little confusing but I will have a go, not sure what Pi is.
What are you planning to use it for John. If it is for security/privacy at home then vpn to your own router from your LAN is no use – you’d need a free or paid solution. Is your VPN pro a PC app? If so that’s probably all you need and it probably gives you a certain amount of data per month at a caped speed – but should be fine for banking, emails etc. If it is for say a laptop that youwill use remotely (e.g. free wifi in a cafe or pub) then an OpenVPN connection back to your router will protect you from local snoopers.
Pi is Raspberry Pi – small, cheap linux PC that would be an economical way to host a VPN at home if your router doesn’t support it. If your router came from your ISP it may not have a VPN server facility, in which case a Pi connected to your LAN could do the job. If your router has a VPN server featured it should offer to create a VPN config file which you can export to your laptop and use with the OpenVPN program.
John are you looking to use on a phone or a pc? If it is android the OpenVPN app is here. For PC look here In either case you will need a VPN configuration file. This will either be one generated by your router (or Pi) or one supplied by a commercial provider (like Torguard, NordVPN etc).
In the case of your app, it is probably using OpenVPN by default and the configuration will be built in to the app. If you are using that app on your phone you don’t need a separate OpenVPN client. If you want to VPN into your home setup then you need the android or windows versions ov OpenVPN linked above. If you are going to use Pi Dan may have the download links or a google will throw up a few guides.
Virtual Private network – a secure tunnel for your data. You can normally set up a connection to your own router (for access from a remote location), or use a commercial service via one of their servers. Aside from security, some people (cough) use the services for location-shifting for (e.g.) access to TV services in another country.
If your concern is security, then as long as your home router is secure (up to date, firewall etc) then setting up a connection to your router via VPN is a good idea – OpenVPN is the protocol I use – and it has a free app for Android. You will feel a bit more secure using WiFi hotspots when out and about if you connect your VPN.
Most other Android VPN apps will be tied to that provider’s service. Generally “free” means slow, overloaded. There are many which work well and loads of online reviews to compare (be careful as many reviews are pushed or sponsored by the providers which come out “on top”).
I on’t know whether I’m impressed or astonished that MS are still trying to compete in the portable space. The ship sailed so long ago you think they’d just let it quietly go away. On Edge – it s going backwards and I can’t think of a sigle reason to use it (it used to have a couple of useful features). MS basically have a share of laptops, the shrinking PC market and next to nothing of tablets and phones. If I was them I’d protect what I still have – their update cycle is definitely testing my patience and there must be a lot of other like me.
2.5Amp? If that is correct then the value is limited. I don’t need one but that never normally stops me. Might just be the specs are wrong.
Thanks for that – new one on me – downloading now.
Phew…..no easy rides but for finishing 2nd in the group we are now grouped with Croatia,Russia and Sweden, Belgium who won the group have Uraguay France and Brazil. This has really worked out for us – winning may be a step to far (who knows) but an amazing chance to get to the final. Best get the weekend beer in early I reckon – shelves could be empty.
you and me both mate…..
I know what you mean Duke but if we knew already (i.e. we’d beat Belgium) then we’d be facing Brazil instead of Sweden (if we get a result tonight). If we go out so be it – if we go through tonight we are in a much better position than Belgium (on paper at least) and that defeat to Belgium would be a blessing.
Main thing fpr me is they hae a go – and keep restoring the public faith and interest that disappeared under Roy Hodgson and before. Fingers crossed.
Am strangely at peace. Will probably change. IF (big if) we get through then finishing 2nd in our group could be one of the biggest touches of all time. Will be fed before the game, liquids only during and after for me.
yeah steak and kidney puddings, spotted dick, treacle pudding and the like. Like boiling an egg I supporse.
Cheers Richard – the phone was crazy – you turned on local WiFi and it wouldn’t find any devices on your Windows Network – iphones and androids did this with ease. There was a lot to like about the phone OS itself but the MS determination to make PCs, tablets and phones “the same” was a disaster for them. If they were “the same” people wouldn’t have all three or at least two of the three platforms.
Windows 8.1 had a superb implementation of OneDrive – which they then killed with W10, then brought back but worse than before,to the extent that I now just use the cloud version. They also had excellent DLNA/UPNP integration with Edge (only thing that made it worth clicking on) – which they have since killed.
Many giant windows updates later I wonder “why”……and am more or less plodding forward with MS and Windows out of habit.
Like Duke I bought a Windows phone to play about with. The OS was very intuitive – it was very stable but yeah – app support was next to nothing. The worst thing to me was – given the branding and the parent company – it didn’t integrate with (computer) Windows at all. Android and IOS played much nicer with Windows Networks than their own (MS) phones.
I think the timing all coincided with the Windows 8 disaster and was part of that major downturn in their fortunes. They pretty much made the wrong decision at every time for a couple of years and steered a whole new generation of potential users away from windows.
They are still at it now by making Windows 10 seemingly worse at every update – adding useless features and removing or breaking useful ones.
The “Live Chat” on MyMemory (icon at bottom of page during Office Hours only) is also very responsive if you do need to contact them. They are a good firm to deal with and although the quick checkout is handy, and it is worth registering an account with them as it makes order tracking easier.
John you can (most cases) screw a mounting screw through the side of the HDD bay in to the side screw-hole of the SSD (or two) and leave it sort of “floating” – Dave is right they are very light. Loads of options – in one of mine the spinner it replaced is left in the case disconnected and used as a platform for the SSD resting on top. That caddy you got for sub-£2 will do just fine and will definitely work if your SSD has a 3.5″ bay.
I don’t think there is such a thing as a 3.5″ SSD John – so yeah your set up should be fine. Youd need as fancy a caddy as that though – the SATA data and power connections on 2.5″ and 3.5″ are the same – so just something to make it fit the 3.5″ HDD bay in the case (I’ve got one sitting in a cable-tie harness which has been “temporary” for about 3 years!). But something cheap and cheerful like this will do fine.
Yeah Sky Q iwould have been interesting 10 – 15 years ago – now as a (more or less) closed patform it is very unappealing – and not particularly well designed or implemented from what I’ve seen.
One other thing on the original points about TV points – worth paying for decent (e.g. WF100) cable and decent connectors – epecially anything behind walls or under floors that you won’t want to replace. Possible that a builder by default might use whatever he has on his van or is cheapest (and the cheap stuff is terrible).
Yep I’ve done a couple of Sky Q mini-boxes from wirleess to wired after which they worked a lot better. On the TV points, I agree the cost seems reasonable – as long as it is done properly. Which for multiple outlets means a distribution amp should be catered for (even if he doesn’t supply it). If the TVs are used one at a time – or if there are only two and the signal is strong then a passive splitter will do – but if you have multiple sets on at the same time then an active amp is likely to be a “must”.
Agree with all of that Duke – Tottenham have got a drummer too – awful (in fact double awful as it is Spurs and a drummer).
On a lighter note I rember playing Crewe in the league cup at Upton Park and one of their fans had a bugle or trumpet and was getting dogs abuse every time he tried to start a tune. Then he playerd “Bubbles” and got a massive laught and a chorus of “Oh trumpet we love you!”
