If it is the same one (Elitebook 840 G1) you recommended to me Dave you need the M2 2242 variant (I got this one). I now boot from that and have the Samsung 860 500GB SSD as a data (and OS back-up drive). Not sure the M2 is much quicker than the 2.5″ just seemed a more logical config. Speed seems about the same (i.e. lightning quick).
480GB for £50 – here. Wish I needed one!
Yeah Dave they jumped through all those hoops with Sky and ended up cancelling as Sky werejust fobbing them off. Completely agree about the re-training but I’m sure there are cases where the ISP uses that as an excuse. When my original FTTC was fitted it came with a HomeHub (v3 I think). I swapped it out for a Billion router, speed dropped, not drastically though, and the came back. Likewise when that router was replaced with the Asus…..small drop but then back in ship shape very fast.
I think the syncing is true – I also think “get the installer out the door” is a factor. My ex-neighbour who I still bump into was persuaded to upgrade from normal Sky to Q. The internet connection didn’t change (although of course the Hub did). the speeds were shockingly bad (for FTTC around 6MBs down – should be pushing 40). Bloke told them it was because of syncing and b*ggered off. Scarcely got better since even though speeds were fine before the Q upgrade. They ended up cancelling.
I think the syncing is legitimate but the ISPs can also hide behind it to cover up other failings on their side.
I mentioned it on a post a while back – Asus VDSL Routers I would swerve – check out the reviews. Great routers (without VDSL) but they can’t get that side of it right. Dave pointed out that the Openreach modems are end of life – but still loads about if you went for a non-VDSL modem and he also posted a newer modem-only option (Vigor/Draytek?) which would do the same job. Dave can you remind me please? My Asus router (RT-AC87U) WiFi easily covers the house (1940s end terrace) – got one of Dave’s Ubiquiti APs serving the garden (and most of East London/Essex if they had the password!) Great bits of kit.
Ed/Bob that is a great idea – and don’t be selfish and keep it to the Midlands – I love reading your stories and they should get a wider audience.
I remember Larry Lloyd from my youth Bob – and his partner (sometimes in crime!) Kenny Burns. Great era of football that. People say Leicester winning the league was the biggest miracle ever – but for me Forest winning the European Cup – twice in a row – easily tops that. Incredible looking back. As always enjoyed the read Bob – always interesting.
Good read that Bob
Dave – agree 100% – it is and should be voluntary. I just question the convictions of the player – given that he is very happy to live and work in this country, taking full advantage of the freedoms and opportunities that were paid for by the sacrifice of others. If was actually that scarred by the previous actions of the Bristish establishment and armed forces surely a more meaningful protest would be to boycott theis country and work in Ireland (only draw back being hewould not be a multi-millionaire). But I suppose “not wearing a poppy” doesn’t dent his income.
Their (Xiaomi) hardware looks great but have read they are integrating advertising into the OS….as opposed to at App-level. Can’t remember where I read it but was enough to make me think twice.
Probably not my cup of tea Dave as I don’t like Leffe and the like. I do remember having some pleasant dark Belgian beers at the harbour in Ostend a good few years ago – washed some mussels down very nicely. They were small glasses but very strong so just as well.
Off topic I notice all the “craft beers” in tescos (loads now) are all in 330ml cans with very different branding/labels to to the more traditional beer or lager. Probably deliberate…..not liking the whole affair to be honest.
[Edited – Ostend not Bruges]
Yes my lads generally get me some at Christmas – too strong for chugging but a very nice “one or two” beer.
Good to know Cheers Bob!
Tim always pays up lively too! Thank goodness for friends like him eh? 🙂
I have a load of stuff to shift and a few people I know have told me to use facebook market – don’t like the look of it but they swear by it. May have a tilt when I finish work next year – one of my pals cleared over a grand in a month on facebook – all done face to face for cash – and no come back on any of it. As I say don’t like the sound of it but will dip my toe in the water when I have a little more time on my hands (soon enough!).
Yes ES should find it – you might need to install a plugin (can’t remember) but in the ES menu, if you go to tools/menu/sd card analyst it will prompt you if you need the plug in. It will show you directories in order of size, and drilling down should find your music folder(s).
I get confused with the moto models – which are the ones with the big batteries – that is my priority these days. I’m currently on a Lenovo P2A42, but also picked up (as a possible replacement) an Asus Zenfone Pro Max when the ebay 10% deal was on. Both have monster batteries but I know one or more of the Motos does too. Their model numbers do my nut in.
I absolutely will Dave – going to have a good explore roud your link Sunday and will definitely follow up on all possibilities including an IFA. Hopefully be a bit clearer on how much of the redundancy I can protect in a Pension (and when I can get at it) soon – which will make things a lot clearer for me (my brain deals with things in series not parallel much to the annoyance of my better half). Thanks again.
Thanks Ed, I made a decision many years ago (when our company share-save scheme stopped) not to invest in anything where there wasn’t stated return (ironic as I do like a flutter). I’m going to read through the Lighthouse stuff that Dave sent me, and have booked an appointment with our firm’s pensions administrator. The “lump sum” when I got my pension estimate was something new to consider and bricks and mortar is looking like it may be the safest place to park money. My instincts go away from an ongoinig relationship with an investment advisor, I’m just not cut our for shares, unit trusts and the like.
The likely state of the economy is a good point, which is what makes me think a property investment could be the way to go. The lump sum + redundancy would go a goodway if it wasn’t for the beleedin tax on the redundancy. I think I can avoid most of that but wouldn’t have instant access to the money. I have also been given the name of an employee representative and I think they have some links for one-off advice.
On Dave’s point the difference to the pension “with lump sum” and “without limp sum” is indeed less than I thought, and by my calculations would start to go in favour of “not taking it” in about 20 years (when I’m 72 if I get that far!). So putting the lump to work before then may be a better bet for me and especially those who follow!
Thank you Richard – some wise words. Mortgage is paid up. I am a simple soul and no grand plans for the money. Protecting it (from tax) is my priority – with a view for my two lads (26 and knocking 24) . Your “every case different” is becoming very clear and there is a lot I need to learn. Thanks again.
Thank you both. Really appreciate the advice – will let it all soak in along with the stuff work (who have been very helpful) are sending me. Got a few months to weigh it all up. If I take the pension, I don’t need the lump sum either from that (Pension) or the redundancy, but the buy-to-let approach is something that has crossed my mind. No chance round here (just inside M25 east side) but a little further out may be feasible. Dave I will look up Lighthouse. Thank you both again,
Thanks – have you got a source on the £30,000 change – this page suggests it is still set in stone. I actually got in touch with my eldest son’s accountant (he’s self employed) and recommended I speak to an Pensions advsior before him. Thanks again.
