Ok so just like 10 years ago, my budget is swelling as I read and watch more reviews
current list:
g4620: Seen a few benchmarks and reviews that suggest it’s an i3 6100 update but cheaper. Coolers, arctic freezer pro still the standard?
mobo, who wants to point out z270 and z170 differences? Asus prime boards are taking my fancy, and I’m not against a simple base frequency (what i presume once was called FSB) overclock.
memory will likely be corsair of some permutation
Graphics, now I’m not saying I will upgrade from the 750ti but… what would be the 8800gt equivelant? Or what would be a good match for the g4620 on games like GTA v and the like?

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012well i might have to move to barrow, so perhaps i will consider deeper the cost vs shiny aspects of each set of components.

So what you are all saying is, i dont need to increase my budget to £500 quid for a kabylake as a Sandybridge will do?

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012I think you will find that i did listen to you all those years ago and thats why i have an e4500 crunching the electrons under my desk as i type. But just like then i’m probably going to opt for a different chipset because i am one of the few people ever to have 5 years after getting an dual x16 PCI-E motherbaord actually buying a matching 8800gt and having sweet SLI Gainz! Also the p5n32e-sli was a superbly robust board with onboard sound and dual LAN and a few other rather nice features.
But i’m weighing up the G4400 vs I3-6100, the latter has a fairly decent rep as a budget gaming CPU and then that got me on the think, hmmmm, how much ram could i buy? perhaps a matched pair of 4gbs now so that in a couple of years i can get another and have 16 Gbs, with a secondhand i7? So its coming down to:
g4400 vs i3-6100 (doesn’t the I3 have a power saving throttling feature where as pentium no?)
h110 vs b150
4Gb vs 8Gb
and then an SSD
You never did answer the PSU question, re: have any of the plugs and sockets changed in any major way in the past few years?

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012they do look fancy but im slowly economising on what i can reuse and seeing what £200 quid will buy me.
And an hour later comparing component prices on different websites im already at the 300 quid mark for a CPU, MB and memory.

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012the viceral joy of clicking things into place, seating a CPU or finally getting that sodding 4th stick of ram to go in is the joy of the hobby. thats why i did it and why the FAILBOX is sat under desk adorned with stickers and still wheezing its way through internet browsing even with my MBP on the desk.
I dont want to spend too much money as its a maybe tertiary hobby now with cycling and Extreme old volvo repair taking top billing but if i can scratch that wonderful itch and serve up some nostalgia pie with delightfully red faction, Command and Conquer topping then sett the memory timings to 6 and crank that FSB clock speed to maximum!

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012For personal use the Ipad 2 and Iphone 4 and 5 ive had have been tough as nails, a popular pub trck back at university was for me to throw my iphone over my shoulder and challenge any of my plastic android brethren to do the same with two doing it and suffering the broken phone consequences. The ipad is my tool of choice now for all but the heavy typing, and it has never let me down so far.
I loved the nexus but as you say it aged FAST they changed the graphic chip after the first year so the first gen got limited support and now isnt supported by much in the way of alternative OSs Cyanogen seems to have breathed a still slightly asthmatic bit of life into it but it has little purpose with the Mini doing everything harder and faster and linked to my phone and MB.

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012Ah the difference is in when we bought our consoles, ive never been an early adopter, so my 360 and PS4 combined were only £500 over the 7 years i’ve owned them, where as the total for the PC has been around £1500with~£1000 on original build and ~£500 on replacements over the (alarming) 10 years and now i sill have a perfectly working 360 and PS4 with a long in the tooth 10 year old CPU machine that struggles to play even ‘old’ (2012) games at 1440×900.
I think being a late adopted of both consoles helped me greatly in avoiding cost and unreliable hardware. I am keen though to see what a budget can get me for a PC these days. more like i said before as a box of nostalgia. (having spent much more than the combined console and PC budget on apple products in the intervening years)

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012oh no, im late to the Forumite party.
But hell yes i only bought mine last christmass to replace a frustratingly slow Asus Nexus.

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012My two cents, not that with inflation and my time away from the world of computing they are worth anything anymore.
I bought my 360 second hand maybe 7 years ago, it has been a youtube mule a netflix atendant and it still cracks out WWE now and then, for the investment of ~£200 quid its provided more entertainment than the desktop machine or any other PC i have owned before or after. I realise my anecdotal tale isnt representative of the general situation but i happily invested in PS4 to take over the duties in the living room for its ease and convenience compared to a PC and the steam store.
The PC became an expensive luxury when i realised 90% of what i did on the PC could be replicated on a netbook and console. For a fraction of the total continued cost of PC hardware. I am by no means an old git yet, but id far rather have an easy life with my tech than have to put in effort when i dont want to. Which a nice RTP console does so well compared to my PC.Feel free to ignore or rip apart my thoughts, I’m still in mourning for the loss of MM a publication and world which shaped much of my teenage years. i only hope now my hobbyiest interest in computers can keep the childhood nostalgia alive lest i slip into the grey cold dark of middle age.

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012Yeah the apple store is expensive,
i would echo once its on its way send it along the bay and flip the money into maybe even another Ipad mini2, they are still on sale and not outrageously priced. If apple still have a student discount programme might be worth looking into as anything bought through the student discount programme has a much reduced long term repair and protect warrante.

IPad Mini 2, Asus Nexus 2012I echo the words of many others, may MM rest in peace. Is this forumite forum a similar hive of scum and villainy? or do the noobs stay out of sight of the pro l33t people (i believe thats how it was spelled in the day).
i too shall miss the occasional forray into the thread and the nostalgia it did bring.
