Can anyone recommend a free Android app, that doesn’t need a sim card, that I can use with my tablet for sending text messages to mobile phones.
I used to be able to do it from my Windows PC but the web site removed the facility. It was very handy to use on the odd occasion.--

July 7, 2017 at 1:06 am #9978Sms or im messages?
If you have a smartphone aswell as the tablet Push bullet may work. I use pushbullet, to sms from my windows pc. Have pb on both phone and tablet, it may let send sms from the tablet, if your phone has a sim.
There are a few apps that do this. But can’t recall any others off the top of my head. I use to use a dedicated app too for this!
For Im messages any of the big names do this. But doubt your asking of Im.
A quick Google brought this up.

July 7, 2017 at 4:35 pm #9995Most of the sites that let you do it without a SIM (Web to SMS) are riddled with ads and make you jump through verification hoops – probably not worth the effort.
Facebook Messenger, Skpye, Viber and many others will let you message to those who have the corresponding app installed (if you are both online). Facebook Messenger (stand-alone app without all the FB b*ll*cks) is very good – you can call and video conf on it too.
As Duke says if you have a smartphone, then apps like Pushbullet and MightyText will let you send from a tablet/laptop via that phone.

A lot of the free SMS & Android apps are for the USA & Canada only.

July 8, 2017 at 6:59 am #10007TextLocal DOES work (but costs) from a Raspberry Pi. so I see no reason why the corresponding Android app should not work too.
Link to TextLocal App
This is the tech blurb for the Pi in case you are interested. It also describes what TextLocal is (a commercial gateway)
July 8, 2017 at 5:55 pm #10012Do you have a mobile contract ?
If you do and your problem is that your tablet can’t take a sim then your provider may have an app for you.
O2 provides TuGo and it lets you log in up to 10 devices to make calls and send SMS over wifi (they all ring at once, tickles me).

I’ll dig out the Pi & have a play tomorrow. 🙂

July 9, 2017 at 7:26 am #10015If you have a phone as well, have a look at NextSMS. It will use your phone to send texts from your tablet, and allow you to read received texts on the tablet.
