Hi All. Some usb’s and a couple of portable HD’s are not being recognised by my pc but when plugged into my laptop there are fine. Previously they were fine, some other things I noticed was that if I plug in a usb or a portable drive that does work when checking what is plugged in it has two drives the same .EG “my backup :e “and below this “my backup :e” .
Any help would be appreciated .

July 3, 2017 at 1:53 pm #9854Hello Bill and welcome to the forum!
First thought with portable drives is the power supplied from the USB port is insufficient…or even that the ports may be on the way out.. It varies a lot. I think the original spec was something like 500mA, but a lot of newer devices including laptop s will output a lot more. Some devices output less (example Amazon Fire TV box where USB power appear to be almost zero). If you can get hold of a USB “Y” cable (the second USB “A” connector is for power only) you may have some luck (assuming you have 2 USB ports available)….or maybe a USB PCI card.
I could of course be completely off track, in which case someone on here will set the record straight soon enough!
July 3, 2017 at 4:09 pm #9856You did not state your OS but I’m guessing it is Windows.
Windows has two major problems with usbs:
a) Further to BL’s post. USBs have an overload protector in software. which cuts out and deactivates the drive if it thinks too much power is being drawn (bit like a reusable fuse). Typically PVRs and other such power guzzlers are the problem. The easy solution is to unplug all your usbs and shutdown the Pc. Wait 30 secs then switch back on. start up Windows as an Administrator. Then plug in the USB equipment ONE AT A TIME. Allow windows to detect and install any necessary drivers before inserting further devices — rinse and repeat.
b) Sometimes you will also get old drivers causing Windows to get confused. The easiest way of dealing with this is to get shot of the lot! You need to follow the following steps
- Show hidden device drivers. link
- Look at the USB devices in Device Manager
- Remove ‘ghosted’ duplicate drivers (normally the HID mice and keyboards cause problems). I’m afraid you have to either use common sense over this, or be careful to do a full registry backup first. link. I’d recommend using the restore point option as it gives a little protection against malware activities. It isn’t hard to do this procedure but please work through it slowly and use common sense as it is possible to break things.
I’m afraid i now tend to be a bit blasé over this process, and delete all the USB drivers and start afresh. I’m not sure I’m brave enough to recommend this approach!
July 6, 2017 at 9:40 pm #9972Hi Guys, sorry its late getting back to you. Right to start with yesterday I did a registry clean. with CClean. Then today when I switched the PC on I thought I would try and plug in my “ALL IN ONE DOCKING STATION” I then plugged my USB memories that did not work into it and low and behold the PC seen them and displayed what was on them, I also plugged the portable drives in and they worked to. So next thing I plugged the USB’s and the portable drives straight into the PC and they worked fine. So could it have been something in the registry ?
I would like to thank you for your interest in trying to help

July 7, 2017 at 1:35 am #9986I wouldn’t try and over think it. Its windows, some days it just decides to have a day of screwing with you just for the fun of it. Usually just as you need it to be at 100%!
I’d only start trouble shooting if it got semi regular.
July 7, 2017 at 6:29 am #9987Basically you did what I suggested for recovering from the over-current protector. A frequent issue as devices get onto the fringes of NEEDING usb3 power capabilities.
