I can’t get Gmail to work in Thunderbird.

I enter the correct details in Thunderbird, the next part is to sign in to Gmail

I keep hitting next but it doesn’t work.

I looked into Gmail and allowed Thunderbird to access my Gmail, it still only goes as far as above

How can I contact Gmail to ask them about it.

Try dropping the @gmail.com out of the username bit. You don’t usually need it in the Google sign in box.

If that doesn’t work in out ad I’ve not use TB for over 10 years.

Also contacting Google is hard. If you have a Google phone on a newish os, there is menu that auto connects you to a real person on the other end. Other than that. I’d have no idea how to contact a Google employee. It’d mostly made up of bots.

Perhaps the real question is, Why bother? Why not just use Gmail and be done with it?

I agree, but some like to have a desktop app. But I can’t compare Gmail interface to thunderbird as I’ve not used the latter for a decade. I actually thought mozzila stopped supporting it about 4 years ago.

Gmail search is just the best.

John – it definitely works on TB and they “link” nicely too. I have TB open on my left hand monitor. The two main accounts on it are GMail and MS Mail. I also have a Tab in ( always open ) Chrome displaying GMail on my right hand monitor. As I delete from one, it reflects on the other, and vice versa.

For me it just works.

Are you looking at it the wrong way round?? It looks like you’re in Google trying to add GMail to TB. You should be in TB, Tools, Account Settings, Account Actions ( drop down box bottom left ), Add Mail Account…..

That is the log in for the new Google authentication page

If you want to give an 3rd app access to your computer own data, you go in here and ok ‘TB’ in this case.

He probably hit the join Google account but on TB and it bushed home to here to white list TB so its trusted.

It’s relativly new.

But if you go to the link below (and sign if if your not and you can see all the apps, services and sites that you allowed Google to sure your data with.

Duke I didn’t fill the user name (as shown), after filling in TB it went to the google page (I have no control)

Jason I bother as I have all my emails in TB so I don’t have to keep opening loads of browsers – apps

I fill in TB then it directs me to google (as pic)

Thanks for the link Duke, it says Mozilla Thunderbird Email Has access to Gmail I just can’t get it to go past the GMail sign in from TB

It’s like this, TB – Account actions – add mail – user name – email – password – Continue

looking up configuration – (then it’s found I have 2 choices Imap or Pop3 I leave it on Imap and press done, then the above window opens (I assume at this point to allow access Gmail want me to sign in

The problem is it won’t go past the sign in pressing Next does nothing.

(i’ll be damned) to explain I have been filling in TB, when it got to the
the above Gmail sign in and I pressed Next it went to password (never done this before) then connected and asked if I want to allow TB, I said yes and Gmail is now setup in TB

It hasn’t got this far for, who knows why it just did, maybe google have seen this
thread and sorted it for me?

Only reason I do is for email backup.

Came in handy yesterday where I had to dig up an email to send to the letting agent to prove we’d reported a problem that they hadn’t fixed.

At least it’s sorted – that’s the way with PC’s every now and again – it can just be something stupid like a space in the wrong position, but it doesn’t tell you and won’t let you move on to the next stage!!

Gmail works fine in Thunderbird.

These are my settings.

POP Server:

pop.gmail.com

username (without the .com)

Port 995

SSL/TLS

SMTP Server:

smtp.gmail.com

Port 25

STARTTLS

Normal Password

Username @gmail.com

These work OK for me

I suppose if you have multiple email suppliers, a desktop client may be nice. As I use the Google mail app, to receive Hotmail etc. So I suppose that is the same a using TB /Outlook on a pc.

I still use a mail client, but use the web page as well – no problem to use both. Gmail is not my primary email (GMX is), and while the Gmail page is OK, the GMX webmail page is awful, so when at home I prefer using outlook or even Windows Mail. The client is also handy if you click on an “email us” link (e.g. mailto:name@company.com) – I don’t think you can associate a web service with links like that. Gmail is also a bit inconsistent with how frequently it checks for other accounts (if you set it up that way), so if you want non-gmail stuff sharpish a client can help.

We all use mail clients (including Gmail) on our phones and tablets, don’t see the issue using one on a PC – it doesn’t disable the webmail access, so it’s not a case of “either/or”.

I downloaded and wiped my Gmail account a few weeks ago for a clean start and backed up all the emails.

I also needed to use Thunderbird to search the MBOX and retrieve the file so that I could attach it and send it to the agents – Gmail interface doesn’t allow you to attached emails (short of printing to PDF and sending).

I’d done a clean start because I was going to migrate back to Gmail but I’ve ended up sticking with Fastmail in the end and renewed my subscription today. The web interface is better I’ve found.
