Good trade, no? I’ll have an Omega!? Probably get a plastic one from the Market…
As the header: for his birthday he wants a new watch. Up to £100. He wants one that will stand up to work as a grammar school caretaker working on the large main site and detached on other Academy schools, yet still look good to wear outside. He wants it Quartz, plain, no fancy chronometers and a leather strap because he has even hairier arms than me and the metal ones irritate, ripping of hairs when he takes it off.
He’s 50. Makes me feel ancient! A family ‘do’ at the weekend, we are keeping it secret or he will leg it somewhere.
I have been online and found a few, but wondered if Forumites had recommendations, all advice gratefully received as usual.

I'm out.June 11, 2017 at 8:20 pm #8968My brother really likes this lot. Should be some within budget.
Not worn a watch since I was kid, Casio Space Invaders job.
June 11, 2017 at 9:37 pm #8970I’ve one of these that probably best suits your needs – a Citizen Eco-Drive. Afraid it doesn’t get much use anymore as I’ve gone down the route of a smart watch (and use an Apple Watch now!) I replaced the watch strap (which was perfectly serviceable) for NATO straps that I could change at will. Current strap is this one.
Not been on exercise yet since moving to Manchester with cadets, but if I do, I switch to my trusty Casio (not the cheapest one, the F-91W – Bin Laden’s watch of choice, as the W-86 has an easier to read nightlight in the dark as the whole display lights up, rather than a corner). I’ve also a Timex Camper that I purchased but IT’s SO BLOODY LOUD that I had to take it off at night and leave it in a different room. The date function on it also doesn’t work to well. It’s a shame, as otherwise it’s a nice watch and would be my daily wear.

June 12, 2017 at 8:19 am #8979I always wear a cheap watch for daily use and keep the good dress watch locked away. I recently cracked the glass on the el-cheapo and bought this watch – cheap as chips, comfortable but not a bad looker. The big numbers make the watch face easy to read. (the pic is an accurate portrayal of the watch face)
As a ‘smart watch’ it isn’t that smart, it is just a pedometer with Bluetooth, but the e-ink display makes it a battery sipper – I cannot verify the 30 days without a charge but I can believe it may be possible. The only downside to it is it does not have a backlight. Best watch I have purchased for a long time, but above all cheap without looking cheap.
Probably not one to give to your son as a present, unless you get him something else and throw it in as a make-weight. It does however make a great everyday watch for anyone not too careful about scratching watch faces, and makes a good stand-by ‘dress’ watch.
June 12, 2017 at 3:16 pm #8999Ed, I bought a watch last summer of ebay /Amazon for £4, so I had a watch for the back. I was amazed how good it was, and that it didn’t die at the first drop of sea water. It’s still keeping time in my glove box. Or was when I last seen it. Just To let big clear display and a good back light. Super cheap band thou.
My BiL also a gorilla, went though £10 casio jobs for a few years, always smashing them, working in tight spaces in air frames. He finally got a GShock, and has lasted him 4 years scuff free, to work.
I had a similar issue in the marines, I wear my way h on my right wrist (left handed), and give you had an SA80 in your right hand, every time I was in the field I’d have to carry a spare watch, as every time I went to ground I’d smash the watch.
In the 90s the GShock was expensive, huge and ugly. All the lads got them, I found an adidas watch with a Sapphire front that works for about the same price, looked like a normal watch, and never scuffed. The leather strap broke years later. Don’t know what happens to it.
Anyway, the GShock can he had for sub £100, we just paid £60 for the same model the BiL has, (but update light destine) for the Fil.
Today they are smaller, just as tough, better looking and cheap. Non or the things from the 90s. A great work and sports watch.
Amazon have a load of different designs This is nice for £70

June 12, 2017 at 8:25 pm #9016Thanks for all the advice guys. After some discussion this morning with my lad, getting more specifics from him, I went online, then drove up to Grimsby and bought this: https://tinyurl.com/y7vh4mgu
As usual, I have been asking for specific needs from him for weeks until I energised his mum and he asked me to the phone. No thin cases, easy to read dial, not a chronometer or anything with more than just the date. Plain white face with ‘proper numbers’ on it. Solar powered if possible. I reckon this ticks his boxes.
He does not go out much and is currently without a GF, as the last two wanted marriage eventually and he is a single parent of a son & daughter now 18 and almost 21. His marriage to the kid’s mum was a disaster, put him off for life. We almost lost the kids at 2 & 4 years old, but we had them declared by the Court under our care until he had a house and job over here. To demonstrate how bad their mother was: the Court decided she could have access only once a month for two hours, supervised by us. She was also forced to make her own way getting here and has never been. All that has not made him anti-women, just worried about getting it wrong for the kids’ sakes.
He is 49, btw, not 50 – my bad! ? HE said he was 50, confused me, (not difficult) was put right by his daughter. I took off my socks and counted up from June ’68 on toes and fingers, ran out and used the calculator. What d’yer know, he is 49! So next year is the half-century. “You should have asked me, I should know,” sez SWMBO, “I was there, you know!” Don’t you just wish they weren’t so damned smartassed, sometimes???

I'm out.June 12, 2017 at 8:37 pm #9017When SWMBO calls me a smarta**e, I always tell her opposites attract, so what does that make her??? At that point I swiftly leave the room and shelter with the dogs, cos I’m going to be in their house until dinner time!!??
June 12, 2017 at 9:07 pm #9023I am NOT going to use that one, John!
I know who is the best cook in this house!

I'm out.June 12, 2017 at 10:21 pm #9031She’s got a sh*tty temper, but a good sense of humour – that’s the only reason I’m still on this planet!!?
June 12, 2017 at 10:41 pm #9032My dear wife does not have a temper, she conveyed that information to me very loudly one day last week. Says that it’s me driving her insane. I pointed out that I have a document which states that I am definitely sane. (actually says “…. no psychological or psychiatric concerns regarding this patient” That conclusion was written after a severe head injury and several operations caused me to be investigated by two eminent specialists.
SWMBO says that is an old document and past its Use By date. Much like the patient. I love her dearly, whoever she is today…
