Hi guys.

so, my wife went away with a few friends and said there would be a DVD player so wanted our holiday videos put onto DVDs to show her friends.

i havent used my DVD burner for a while or any software so tried a few i had but they came back with various errors. so i tried windows 10’s built in burner and did the discs but they wouldnt play in my PS4 but i thought they would be okay in the dedicated dvd player. unfortunately they didnt play.

have i missed something or are the dvds too old (?)

any suggestions for software and any specific settings etc?

Try Googling on “ps4 dvd disk problems”. Judging by how many people have similar problems it looks like the PS4 disk controller has a design fault. Try the PS4 forum as a starter.

Wrong sort of disk – DVDR+, DVDR- or DVD RW? The plus and minus varieties have all but disappeared but if they are really old disks they may be the problem. The RW can also cause some systems to be picky. I rarely need to burn a DVD but when I do I use DVD R and that gives no issues.

However I would just try reburning the disk and verifying the write.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the point?

When you say holiday videos put onto DVDs, what are they on now, what format are they in. mpg need to be converted to DVD (create DVD)

Ashampoo Burning Studio 18 (paid) is a good one, they do a free one but I have no experience with DVD burning.

NCH Express Burn is free, I have no experience with DVD burning.

Good question John!

I had assumed we were just talking of stock Android/Apple or m4v output, and there was a ‘physical’ problem in viewing them. I never even thought about DVD TV format being an issue.

If I’m reading it correctly then yes you need to author a Video DVD and not just write the files to a (data) DVD. Ages since I did one and the preferred methods are a little involved, I do remember thought that Freemake was a very simple one-stop-shop to do things without much effort. I also remember that its important to opt out of all the “free software” when you install it.

If you have done it correctly then when you look at the DVD in (e.g.) Windows Explorer you will see a folder called “VIDEO_TS”.

I use AnyMP4 DVD Toolkit from https://www.anymp4.com/dvd-toolkit/

I can’t remember it having any random extras when I installed it, but it was a while ago.

thanks guys

firstly the dvd’s are DVD – R. probably more than 5 years old.

the oldest home movies we have were always WMV (?)

the newest are a mixture of mp4 and m2ts (dont know why the difference)

i also have another couple that are avi but i’m not sure if i converted them previously to view on the old tv headrest screens.

i honestly thought the burner program converted them as well as burning

Standard CD/DVD burning software will burn to DVD, but DVD film is different. As blacklion suggested you have to Author them.

I have just converted my Dads old VHS tape to mpg then Authored them with Nero 10 (nero will convert WMV and most other formats)

When you go to burn you need to select Video – Photo – Create Video – Make DVD – DVD Video – Import your files (ie Summer 2017) then follow on screen next (you can create chapters) then burn it to DVD. Then do the same for your next video. Your video ie Summer 2017 may be large ie 2gb once it’s converted to DVD it could be 5gb to big for stanadard 4.3GB DVD you need an 8GB DVD if your rom will use them. it may be under 4.3gb so a standard DVD will do it.

Before you start your blank DVD must be in the rom.

Nero 10 is just an example you will need to search for your software. They all should be more or less the same.

Thanks John. I’ve tried briefly looking for nero alternatives (only had a couple of minutes last night) but I’m not sure if they are just authorers or just burners. Any suggestions for software that does both like nero?

I don’t e en have a dvd drive in a single PC, haven’t for almost ten years, so I’m a little out The loop, but would windows movie maker make a simple photo dvd.

Lots of Linux ones such as Handbrake but that does not help.

You could try VLC then just burn the resulting file using the Windows 10 software.

DVD Shrink for authoring

Like most freeware these days, watch the install carefully for unwanted PuPs.

DVD Shrink is for copying existing DVD content I think rather than compiling your own?

I thought I posted this yesterday but can’t see it – DVDFlick is worth a look as is AVS2DVD in partnership with ImgBurn mentioned above – its worth getting ImgBurn from Ninite (under Utilities) to avoid the tat that now comes bundled with the main installer.

I had forgotten Handbrake is available for Windows 10 link

This short how-to covers AVI->VOB but the same applies to MP4->VOB etc link
