As this Beeb report states, a Qantas plane had to make an emergency landing in Baku due to suspected smoke in the cargo hold. They opened it up and found nothing wrong.
It reminded me of a similar incident that happened to me on board an early Boeing 777 that did a forced return to Dubai due to smoke. After some frustrating hours on the ground we were herded back onto the same plane. When we asked a flight attendent what had happened he told us about the ‘smoke’, but quickly went on to say that it was a crate of over-ripe fruit (smelly Durian) that set off the alarms. The fermentation of the fruit gave a temperature signal while the foul Durian fumes (which smell like a sewer) overwhelmed the smoke sensor.
