Remembering the old adage ‘correlation != causation’, I will not say that the update breaks DHCP but something did in the days around my updating my main PC.
Silently turning off DHCP has the nasty effect of making Internet connections unstable and erratic, but they still work most of the time!
If you update and find problems in getting a stable Internet, your first suspect should be your network adapter’s DHCP setting.
October 10, 2022 at 3:52 pm #70090One of the new features of w11 is the thread or core CPU optimizer and its very good at balancing power and heat. But it has quite a lot of latency. I am glad I have not made the switch yet and it sounds like you do not want one of the old cronk Rysen 3800x CPU’s as they are just 4×2 stuck together and no doubt even more latency.
October 12, 2022 at 12:22 pm #70107Must be using IP V6 because with V4 you would definitely go nowhere.
December 9, 2022 at 10:18 am #70355I am on W11 pasted on top of W10 so not a clean install.
Its just W11 networking. It seems like a serious step back to me (problems). With W10 all devices where presented to you on a plate. W11 I have had to fight to get my printer to work and NAS I cannot get to. if I enter the web address I can get to settings but I cannot get to the content.
When I click on my PC at the bottom network nothing shows. my printer should at least be in there?
December 9, 2022 at 1:17 pm #70356Check to see if it’s using IP V4, I tend to turn off V6 entirely although I see it’s back on after the W11 upgrade.
I also use my PiHole as a DHCP server as well as DNS (I actually run it as a VM on my Synology). All my Virgin Hub does is routing and firewall duties as even my WiFi is separate. I find things are a lot more stable and much better supported. How many router firmware updates do you see? 2 or 3 at most.
December 9, 2022 at 1:22 pm #70357It would seem w11 turns a lot of stuff off ?
Enabling all SMB fixed it.
I can now see my NAS.
December 9, 2022 at 1:46 pm #70359They must have upped the minimum SMB level again. I rarely (knowingly) use SMB any more, Synology have their own solution.
December 21, 2022 at 5:51 pm #70389So with the W11 on top of W10 upgrade I did the other week, which gave me some problems I decided to go for the full clean install 0f W11 and its terrrific. It just works and no bother at all.
As a gamer I am perticular about how I set up W and install drivers. Needless to say then I was horrified to find W11 wants to conected. Fortunaltey there is that nifty work around and I implemented and got what I wanted. Also no log in this time. Yay!
I especially like the way windows uses that HDR funtion. I have a cheap HDR monitor but w makes it seem not so cheap.
Makes me smile when setting up windows because when you have got a ton of partions and drives like me you gotta make sure you know just what you are deleting or disaster could strike. As careful as I was I some how managed to wipe a game partion.
No harm done.
December 22, 2022 at 9:54 pm #70400The fingerprint reader is the only issue so far. Some customers with NUC and Asus PN50s upgraded a long time ago; no problems reported there either and one of them uses Google for Business so that’s OK too.
I did my first clean install yesterday on an AMD Asus PN50. The default drivers worked absolutely fine but to get all the bells and whistles it is worth installing the OEM versions. In the case of a NUC it is absolutely essential to install Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant and well worth it on any Intel based machine.
I think it’s time to start installing it by default on new machines, apart from customers with a mix of W10 machines that can’t be upgraded (which I find particularly stupid).
December 23, 2022 at 11:40 am #70404Amazes me how fast w11 installs. 2mins and rebooting quick pull pen drive.
Just a heads up folks on how to dodge W11 trying to force you online.
Net conection pulled and with Shift+F10 I was able to by pass W11 internet connection aspirations.
And in command type OOBE\BYPASSNRO. and with that you can install W11 as you like. -
