I have been getting slick ads for Solidigm NVMes from CCL in my Facebook feed of late. There campaigns aren’t cheap so I thought it couldn’t be a cheap Taiwanese job. Turns out a new brand name for SK Hynix who bought out Intel’s SSD business.

SK Hynix may not be familiar either, but if you have a mid range Lenovo or HP laptop odds on the NVMe is by them. They do turn up outside of the OEM world, but usually on places like Amazon rather than EBuyer.

I’ve found them to be solid performers, exactly what you would expect in that world. Mine benchmarked at 1800 read 1600 write. You probably wouldn’t buy one, but you wouldn’t pay to upgrade it either (unless you really, really wanted a P5 like I did).

If they get the price of the new P41 Plus right, that may change. One to watch, but apparently current stock is still turning up in Intel branded boxes.

Not heard of Solidigm but I recently bought a used SK Hynix NVMe drive & have some of their RAM in the spares box. All good stuff in so far as I’ve had no problems. Unlike a Lite-on NVME in a PCIe adapter which couldn’t be detected by Windows but that works ok if placed in an external case.

These new drives are, I believe, Intel designed and built. I don’t know if they are junking their own stuff or going to operate as “separate” businesses aimed at specific markets.  But the top end kit will be “Intel” I’m sure.

Came across this by chance – Intel’s NAND SSD business has been acquired by Solidigm
