Thought I might start a new topic on freeware.
WSCC (Windows System Control Center)
Portable & free for personal use. Windows 7 – 11.
Contains the combined suites of programmes from SysInternals (Mark Russovitch), Nirsoft (Nir Sofer), Mitek (Michal Mutl) & some from Steve Gibson of Gibson Research.
Too many to list but they are all bundled into one suite with it’s own console for the command line programmes, though most seem to be GUI & all can be updated from the main window.

It’s one of those programmes that you don’t know you need until you’ve got it then you don’t know what you would do without it.

August 1, 2022 at 7:22 am #69833I gotta take a look at that.
August 16, 2022 at 12:35 am #69849In a previous post I mentioned Snappy Driver Installer Origin which is great for finding those obscure chipset drivers that normally come with the motherboard CD but are difficult, if not impossible, to find online
– https://www.glenn.delahoy.com/snappy-driver-installer-origin/
In a similar vein is DriverPack Solution by Artur Kuzyakov (& originally posted by Dave)
At the click of a button it will install all missing drivers on any Windows 7 /8/10 & presumably Windows 11.
Major Geeks write up (& download) – https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/driverpack_solution.html
“DriverPack Solution is a utility for the automatic installation of drivers & software.
This utility is entirely suitable for all models of computers and laptops, including Asus, Acer, Sony, Samsung, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens, DELL, eMachines, MSI, and much more.
DriverPack Solution contains the drivers for all devices including Motherboard, Sound Card, Video Card, Network Card, Wi-Fi, Chipset, Controller, Bluetooth, Modem, Web-camera, Card Reader, CPU, Input Device, Monitor, Printer, Scanner, USB, to name a few.”
Lots of Youtube videos on how to use online & offline.

August 16, 2022 at 12:05 pm #69853Sysinternals is a great package, but it helps to use one of the many tutorials such as the one on using Process Explorer to find malware: link
August 26, 2022 at 1:05 am #69873Having another PC to find the motherboard drivers for, I thought that as I hadn’t used it for some years, I would try out DriverPack Solution & I wish I hadn’t.
Mine is version 17.4.5 run from a USB thumb drive along with all the drivers so that it can be used off line. It wants to run & install everything automatically. It took ages to sort itself out then installed Opera, a Facebook link & something else that I can’t remember before I cancelled the programme & removed the unwanted wares. Shame because it used to be a good programme but perhaps it’s the price that has to be paid when a programme is free & requires further resources.
Happy to report that Snappy Driver Installer Origin did the job. Had to use the online option as I hadn’t downloaded any driver packs. These are delivered to the programme by torrent (found accidentally by hovering the cursor, or right clicking, the downloading line in the GUI).

Following on from the beta of Winamp 5.8 in 2018 version 5.9 is now available to download which includes support for Windows 11.
Versions 2 & 5 can be updated by installing over the top but version 3 needs to be uninstalled before installing 5.9.

October 4, 2022 at 12:14 pm #70052Hi Ed.
I actually brought the Windows Sysinternals Reference book from Microsoft press.
The book goes into great detail about every Sysinternals utility that was avaliable at the time it was published.
The book also starts out with an explination of how Windows Virtual Memory and processes work, if you don’t want to buy Windows Internals Vol’s 1&2, it’s worth it just for that.
October 5, 2022 at 8:10 am #70061Good choice. Sysinternals is a great set of tools but far from intuitive.
I see that M$ have produced another similar book ‘Troubleshooting with the Windows Sysinternals Tools‘. Scanning the index for this, it looks like it covers a lot of topics in one place, and saves hunting through the Internet – better in fact as one problem with on-line searches is that you either have to know roughly what you want, or need to use the correct terminology. I might treat myself to a Kindle version. ( I have too many out of date computer reference books in hardback.)
October 6, 2022 at 12:45 am #70067Rufus 3.2 now allows all restrictions of Windows 11 to be bypassed.
After the ISO, Partition scheme & Target system requirements (eg GPT/UEFI MBR/BIOS) have been selected
Start – Rufus gives a popup window
