This is perhaps old news for some of you, but been blown away by 5G speeds today!

Starting a new job shortly which will be a working from home position and I’ve been investigating a 4G connection as a backup.

I realised that Three were now offering 5G speeds no extra costs, so I grabbed a PAYG SIM to try in my iPhone.

Ok, so there’s a bit of a difference between the highest speeds and the lowest speeds, but it’s far in excess of my Virgin connection and at a fraction of the price (well currently 2/3, and 2/5 once they up my price at the end of the contract).

I’ve been bitten in the past by having a 4G connection as my main connection, but I understand that 5G might be a bit less affected by that (it seemed to really slow down when people were working from home during the pandemic).

Beginning to think I’ll take Three up on their deal, especially as it appears a free 5G router, which appear to be quite costly. I’ve got until next February when the Virgin contract ends anyhow, so I’d have that backup still.

Good luck with the new job.

I have a neighbour whose company also has nearly everyone working from home, and has been doing so for quite a long time. Chatting with him, the only major downsides appear to be for new hires – it is harder for them to find their way around and much harder to tune in to company politics and hot buttons.

He felt that there is a small loss of teamwork due to an emphasis on individual performance. He equated it with Manchester United – great individual players but a team that potentially under-performs. They are now attempting to avoid some of these issues by regular offsite meetings where everyone talks about their projects and gets feed-back from the rest of the group. It is often an overnight Holiday Inn  do as this allows informal after-work bar and socializing time.

Hmm, Ive just signed up for a fiber deal £19month for 1year. The 4G thing was a nightmare.

Got me a router this time around to compliment what ever they send me, Its: A7 AC1750 apparently this one works with Alexa.

I’ve been 5G only for a good few years.

I’m with Lebara (Vodafone) and it’s far better than Virgin cable ever was and cheaper.

3 isn’t an option here, signal is poor. Shame as it’s really cheap.

Mum is out of contract on both her phone and broadband so ordered a Smarty SIM yesterday for her to try in her phone. Hopefully the Smarty (3) signal is as good as it used to be and she can ditch the Virgin muppets.

BT Offer a Hybrid Connect option. link

To be honest I do not know how good it is, however it does NOT automatically  eliminate loss of Internet when the BT Halo system gets confused and needs a reboot.

New firm do the same – meet every quarter for an in person time meeting. It also sounds like they have a team meeting every two weeks online to deliver an hour of training (one staff member is given a topic and then plans the presentation) which is to help everyone get chartership, which is what I’m trying to do.

I mean 800Mbps is pretty quick – at those speeds, you’re almost getting to the saturation point for the Gigabit Ethernet on the router!

You are definitely on to something there Drezha.

For sure I will be looking for a 5G set up next year. I was looking at the price for 2nd hand 5G routers on e bay and wow.

It would have been great if you had pulled in a 100GB game download when you had speeds of 800+Mbps. May bees your drives would not have written at that those speeds and found your self in a bottle neck.

I pasted 10 GB of files from my pen drive to my media center and if I remember it ran at 100+mbps.

I was well pleased as it took about 5 mins and not half an hour as I would of expected.

I ordered it this evening – went through Quidco, even though they didn’t have a specific link for the 5G router, and just had a confirmation email of £60 cash back!

Three had a 30 day money back guarantee, so I thought I’d give it a go. Basically have the first 6 months free if the cash back goes through.

Current Virgin speed – tested over WiFi.

Hooking up to 5G via the router (this is plugged in via ethernet mind)

If it stays like that, I’ll be pretty happy and will be able to kiss Virgin goodbye! Just need to figure out how I’ll manage in modem mode if I keep this on my office windowsill…

If it works out will you continue to tie up your phone, or just get a 5G receiver such as the Nokia one?

These latest tests are taken using the router with Three. As I went for the contract in the end.
