Report from BBC.com: an old battery idea by Edison, could provide cleaner, longer lasting power and Hydrogen.

As a young Chemical Engineer I had to deal with hydrogen and it issues on almost a daily basis. Imo hydrogen as a fuel will never be a world-saving energy resource. Putting aside the energy intensity of splitting hydrogen away from any compound, once you have it, it is a pig to handle. It leaks through solid steel due to the small size of its molecule, it causes hydrogen embrittlement of metals and even a minor leak is a potentially major issue. Not only is it potentially explosive, if a small leak catches fire there is a real danger that the very hot nearly invisible  hydrogen flame will act almost like a thermic lance and quickly turn a small fire into a big one.

From what I’ve been reading recently, Solid State Batteries will soon be putting Li-Ion and Li-Pol to shame.

Big development being done by Toyota ( interesting article from TorqueNews HERE ), VW backed QuantamScape HERE  and  Tesla HERE  for their version of the future.

All fascinating reading which will transform EV driving in the very near future.

That was interesting John. Hope it takes the market and gives a REAL alternative to ICE’s. With a side effect of cleaning up the cities and denying space for more pollution taxes!

Well, Bob, you know what they’re like – they will only replace current taxation methods with …………………….. current taxation, you’ll pay by the milliamp to charge your car, probably utilising an output from your Smart meter or the like.

Spot on, and that is why the so-called road fund tax or fuel duty has never been ring-fenced for that purpose.

According to Ars, the car makers share my dislike of hydrogen as an automotive fuel.

I think it’s only Toyota that is still playing with hydrogen, they soon will drop it. Its a dead end.

Just to stir things up, hydrogen mixed with natural gas makes a great substitute for the old Towns Gas which consisted of roughly hydrogen 50%, methane 35%, carbon monoxide 10%, and ethylene 5%.

Forget the carbon monoxide and ethylene and a 60/40 mix of natural gas and hydrogen would make a great Towns Gas substitute. Unlike pure hydrogen it would also be easy to distribute around the country.
