My phone is barely lasting the day just as a phone, (Battery cannot be replaced). While this is just about acceptable during lock-down, hopefully the carp battery life will be unacceptable by Easter and I will need to replace it
I was quite tempted by the Apple 12 mini until I checked that its battery life isn’t much better than the phone I have.
Does anyone have recommendations for a non-phablet phone that fits in a shirt pocket, has an OK or better camera and a battery that lasts a full day under moderate duty?
January 9, 2021 at 5:18 pm #65678Mrs B has a Samsung Galaxy A41 which meets your criteria :good:

January 9, 2021 at 6:53 pm #65683Ta, but I must be missing something. Amazon’s stock all show up as phablet size~6″?
January 10, 2021 at 12:07 am #65691The decent camera in the size you want seems to be the tricky thing.
January 10, 2021 at 12:09 am #65693What phone do you have at the moment ?
January 10, 2021 at 7:53 am #65723Currently I have an old Wileyfox Swift 2X, which is a tad larger than I would like and only does okayish photos. I jibe from paying the Apple tax especially on a phone hampered by a small battery. (they should of made it a little thicker to accommodate more cells). However, the iPhone 12 mini does have a great camera.
January 10, 2021 at 2:45 pm #65761Does the iPhone SE 2020 fit the bill? The battery life of that is decent – I’ve one arriving for work this week I believe to replace an old 6S that is in the same boat as your Wileyfox with the battery dying. And my wife has one and the battery can do two days without issue.

January 10, 2021 at 8:00 pm #65774Ive got the LG V30. I got it on the grey MKT from Hong Kong.
Mine is faultless and better than most reviews I have read.
But the Grey market is a gamble.
I got it cos of the quad DAC and 2TB expandable storage above all other features.
The phone is seriously cosmetic and may well jump out of a shirt pocket.
January 10, 2021 at 8:16 pm #65776Thanks, but AaaagH! Now I have to decide if the better camera on the 12 mini is worth ~£300.

It fits in my shirt pocket with about 15mm poking out of the top.
Even my Moto Play G9 fits in my shirt pocket (with 45mm sticking out) and that is more of what I call a phablet

January 10, 2021 at 10:47 pm #65784£300 buys you a lot of camera for the other pocket LUMIX DC-TZ90 Canon Powershot SX730 HS Sony DSC-WX500 or even my Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ70 (same Leica DC Vario-Elmar 24-720 mm Lens as the TZ90) for £209
January 11, 2021 at 10:43 am #65810The Nokia 8 (surprisingly) could be my alternate to the iPhone SE 2020.
However, before making a jump to the Darkside, I thought that I had best check out whether Apple has the equivalent iPhone apps. Most, including , to my surprise, my e-home apps now have iPhone equivalents, but there is to my mind one huge gap that maybe Drezha can answer. (I’d hate to ask my Apple-mad son, as he would slip into Apple salesman mode!)
Out of lock-down, my wife and I like to cross-country walk on the footpaths of the UK (mainly in the West Country). The problem is usually one of phone reception and the need to use off-line maps that cover both terrain and footpaths/bridleways. I use offline OpenStreet maps as these are usually much better than Google for this purpose.
Although I know that Apple used OpenStreet at one time, but a search on this in the Apple Store reveals zilch. My question to Drezha and others is whether Apple has offline maps that cover both terrain and footpaths. ( terrain, as sometimes the sight of a darned great hill is a bit off-putting to us and instead we divert a couple of miles!).
If the answer is no, then it looks like it will have to be a Nokia 8, even though it is much longer than I would like.
January 11, 2021 at 3:39 pm #65822The Google Pixel 4a also fits the pocket in terms of apps/size/camera, but seems to be a bit crappy in strong sunlight. (A strong consideration if used for navigation in the countryside). If Steve has any Google Pixel comments I’d appreciate them.
January 11, 2021 at 5:10 pm #65829Dont buy a phone direct from Nokia. Fingers burned here. Gave me a real hard time to get a refund. I had to use my credit card company to get the money back in the end.
Get it from Argos or Similar.
January 11, 2021 at 6:29 pm #65832Unless your willing to go back a few generations of phone small smartphones with good performance and cameras are thin on the ground.
6″ + screens are the norm now except on really budget phones.
Maybe you could try sticking the phone in your trouser pocket instead? My One Plus 8 Pro (6.78″ screen) fits easily in my Asda jeans.

I have cracked a couple of screens like that, and vowed to cut out that particular habit. Even the last gen Gorilla Glass on the Google Pixel 4 comes with user warnings. I would rather risk dropping it down a toilet as most phones now seem built for a temporary immersion. 😉
January 11, 2021 at 7:23 pm #65843I always put good quality screen protectors on, tempered glass ones. Not cracked a screen yet, cracked about 2 screen protectors though but that’s what they’re there for.
When I could get out on my fatbike (many years ago now) I used to stick my phone in the pocket in my rucksack. it would often bounce out and ricochet of keys and the like in the same section of the rucksack. Never broke a screen.
January 11, 2021 at 7:39 pm #65846Sticking a phone in the rear pocket of jeans and sitting down can put a hefty bending moment on the phone. (I find the front pocket an uncomfortable location).
January 11, 2021 at 7:52 pm #65848Fair enough Ed, if it doesn’t work for you, so be it. Mine always go in the front right hand pocket.
Can’t stand anything in the rear pockets for more than a few minutes.

Hum…
I use a mix of Ordnance Survey (as that does offline and I have a subscription for cadets) and oddly, a geocaching app, Cachly.
Cachly is a one off paid for app, and then I seem to recall a one off additional cost for the premium open street map with terrain. However, it’s open street map theme and detail is perhaps one of the best I’ve used.

Open Street Maps say that Viewranger and Maps.me use open street maps. Maps.me appears to show terrain as well. I’m sure I used in the past when I visited Berlin many years ago when mobile data wasn’t free in the EU.
