Given my pcs was built in 2009 (i7 920 have) and done some excellent service in that time, add the kids want access to my steam games I thought it was time for a pc refresh
I have no idea what cpu GPU or even HDD is relevent today. So help is needed.
I don’t need anything super powerful as they will be using the 24″ 1080p monitors. And to start with I’ll be keeping the gtx970, I think that should be good enough for now.
So what cpu and mobo should I be looking at? I’ll likely keep my 800w PSU as that is only a couple of years old, and I’m assuming CPUs are more economical today.
Any help much appreciated. I wouldn’t mind an unlocked CPU, (if they are still a thing)
Edit-
Bolt in WiFi and Bluetooth on the mobo would nice.
November 9, 2020 at 5:34 pm #63420Forget overclocking today. Unless you go the intel cpu way. But Obvs AMD is now where its at. Good idea to hang on to your GPU as lots of new stuff coming out soon.
But the CPU to go for is the AMD 3600 and what ever B450 mobo takes yer fancy and dont forget you want pc 3200 ram.
The uplift in performance from the 3600 in games is mind boggling.

November 9, 2020 at 6:10 pm #63422There are some real bargains to be had with the 2nd Gen Ryzen, specifically the Ryzen 5 2600X (unlocked 6 cores 12 threads 3.6 – 4.25 Ghz) @ £140. The supplied Wraith Spire cooler is fine too.
And for another £60 there’s the Ryzen 7 2700X (unlocked 8 core 16 thread, 3.6 – 4.35 Ghz) with an RGB Wraith Prism Cooler. This time last year I built a gaming machine around the still available CCL Kallis Ryzen 7X AMD Motherboard Bundle @ £369 with 16GB HyperX DDR4 and the Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE
Add BT 5 & WiFi 6 in one card, Gigabyte GC-WBAX200 802.11ax @ £27 and I added an Adata XPG SX8200 Pro 256GB M.2-2280 SSD & a 2TB Barracuda.
The GTX 970 won’t be too good with modern titles due to lack of VRAM. For the graphics we went with an MSI Radeon RX 580 ARMOR 8GB OC which at £180 is still good bang per buck.
I used a BitFenix Nova Mid Tower Gaming Case and some extra BitFenix Spectre PWM 120mm Fans,

but for a previous bling build (with a Ryzen 7 1700X) I used a Phanteks Eclipse P300 with a Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML120L RGB Liquid CPU Cooler and Cooler Master MasterFan MF121L RGB (120mm) Chassis Fans.

There’s a lot you can do with the RGB, it’s just set to all red for the photos.
November 9, 2020 at 6:20 pm #63424Why can’t we edit any more? I hit edit, did a load to include the 3600 Teafie mentioned and saved, nothing changed.
Anyway, the R7 2700X and R5 3600 are neck and neck on performance and price. CCL do R5 300 bundles which you can customize. The Aurous mobo and app controls all the RGB and there are extra RGB headers on the mobo too. You have to keep it all the same protocol.

I’ll keep you posted.
November 10, 2020 at 7:37 am #63441That ADATA SSD is supposed to be fantastic value for money. I hope so, as I ordered the 512GB version at the weekend! :good:

November 10, 2020 at 10:35 am #63447One thing to remember about SSD’s is that games R currently not optimised for them and so it does not matter how fast your SSD is. Games will load approximatley at the same speed wether or not your SSD is so called fast or slow.
So on thast basis a 1TB cheapy sloey may be just what you want went it comes to game storage and let us not forget that a SSD will load a game at least x2 the speed of a HDD. Gay :yahoo:

Yeah, not a huge difference between SSD’s in loading games – but far better than a HDD according to this video!

Exception being Fallout 4, where load times are linked to framerate! There is a mod to improve this…

November 11, 2020 at 2:37 pm #63485I was gonna get a glass sided case and the liquid loop, bit as it’s a kitchen pc and will be hidden I’m just gonna use one of the cases I have for now.
I bought the bundle Dave pointed to, plus a WiFi card and a 500gb (iirc) m.2.
I’ll see how the gtx970 works with it, after all it’s will only be running 2x 1080p 24″ screens.
Plus the money saved on a case, a modular PSU, and water loop goes along way to paying for a gfx card if need be.
Gonna be building this into a kitchen cupboard, as a few extra fans will be needed . Shame it’s not next to the tortoise copbored, could of vented staright into it

We moved my desktop in to the bedroom for a bit, as we found that the added heat from running distributed computing overnight and the white noise of the fans helped Aoife sleep.

November 11, 2020 at 11:16 pm #63502The Wraith Prism cooler is really good, you shouldn’t need anything more. One of the reasons for using the liquid cooler in the bling build was for the looks more than needing better cooling. It’s the graphics card that will likely cause any heat issues.
November 12, 2020 at 7:40 pm #63521That’s good for me, this one will be hidden, so bling isn’t s factor.
I do like white noise when I sleep. Bose Noise cancelling earphones are the best for it.
November 12, 2020 at 7:56 pm #63523Wash my mouth out but the new MacBook Air looks interesting with single core performance that is better than the AMD Ryzen 5900 with a Geekbench score of 1687 vs 1616 for the Ryzen 5900! Of course on the multicore stage the Ryzen eats the MacBook’s lunch and nearly doubles the Macbook score. However for a ‘pad’ this is amazingly good performance.

I ordered an M1 Mac Mini today  I’ll see how it goes when it gets here. The Geekbench benchmarks are impressive but then looking at the devices I have, the portables have the best single core scores!

Perhaps the Mac Mini isn’t the best use of the chip – after all, low power consumption etc suits the mobile market. However, this is the cheapest one to try (and education discount applies…) Still a few apps I like using on the Mac and the idea I can use iPad apps on the Mac was also of interest. I’ll see how things work out and would be willing to share the experience.

November 13, 2020 at 7:23 am #63535I’ll give Apple a miss – its spyware is far too intrusive.
November 13, 2020 at 12:36 pm #63537Interesting. I know Android has been doing that for years – everytime an app is opened etc. A snapshot of my app activity on the 9th! And you need to keep it on to be able to use various Google items.

I’m sure Windows collects similar. I mean looking at the blocked domains in my Pi Hole, the tracking domains are the top 10 blocked sites, so this doesn’t seem that new and seems to be across the board.

November 13, 2020 at 2:57 pm #63539Windows does allow you to switch off ‘most’ of their tracking via the privacy settings. The browser is of course something else, and Firefox now allows a lot of the tracking spyware to be neutered but you have to dig a bit into the config.
