I finally took the plunge and bought an Ender 3. It arrived late yesterday afternoon, and so after spending the best part of 4 hours putting it together, I finally got around to testing. Printed one of the test prints overnight, and very happy with the result.

Then this morning, I bodged up a Suzanne in Blender, took it into Ultimaker Cura for slicing and supports, and printed. Also pretty happy.

Now I’m printing a downloaded model (suitably re-setup for this printer) as a stand for my vape tanks, and off it’s going.

Glad I had the foresight to order a couple of large roles of filament – the stuff provided with the printer couldn’t manage the initial test model before it ran out.

I see me printing a lot of pointless carp for the foreseeable until the novelty wears off.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

My mates got one, I’ve never been tempted. His house is covered in programmable lights, even his “Christmas Tree” is made of them. I believe he uses it to make custom parts for installation of all this stuff, but being an engineer by trade he’s OK doing whatever it is you need to do to make the patterns (or whatever they are called).

I’ve been tempted for ages, but put off by the apparent lack of print quality in the sort of printer I could afford.

However things are changing/changed and reports of multi-material printing and stuff like this have resulted in the itch still being there. I have a vague dream of mixing conductive materials with the flexible voile-like materials in the link to make some interesting sensors/capacitors/clothing accessories.

I have also been tempted by CNC laser cutters to use all the Amazon cardboard leftovers and laminate them into furniture etc.

That said, I think a new Ryzen PC probably takes the biscuit and will use all my spare cash!
