Can anyone explain this. Apparently, Amazon Prime requires an annual subscription. I have never taken out a Prime subscription – ever. I did a trial, and the movies wouldn;t work on Linux, so I cancelled and never paid a penny. That has to have been 3 – 4 years ago. I’m sure I would have noticed if I’d accidentally paid the circa £80 per annum that it costs in that time.

Lately, I’ve been buying some stuff, and only in the past week or so have I noticed I’m a prime consumer. Now, I figured it was marketing to get me to pay, so didn’t really pay attention until it grabbed my attention.

Soooo – tonight I got around to looking, especially since Chrome on Linux supports Netflix (which i do pay for), I thought why the hell not.

It seems, I have Prime membership, which I haven’t paid for, but which affords me freebie access to the movies etc.

Is this a new marketing ploy; Hand it over for free? Not sure I see the benefit for Amazon.

What am I missing, or am I victim of an error in my favour for once in my life?

EDIT: It now works with Chrome on Linux.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Before they cotton on watch Black Sail and vikings. Especially black sail.

Though Mr Robot is probably the best thing on there.

Started with Sneaky Pete. Vikings and Mr Robot are on the list. Never heard of Black Sail, what is it?

Are you sure you’ve not just been enrolled on another free trial, perhaps by clicking a button inadvertently during checkout some time?

If £70+ goes out the bank marked Amazon, then something was clicked.

I did it, but they refunded after I told them.

Black sail is an adaptation of treasure Island. It’s really good. I’m up to date now, and have to wait weekly for the episodes to drop, like the olden days.

It inspired me to read treasure Island last month. That was rubbish, so if you dont like the book, don’t worry the show is good. The first couple of Eps are average, but once it gets going its very good. I watch the whole 5 years worth of episodes in about 4 weeks!

With Mr Robot I’d stop after season 1, that is awsome, season 2 just didn’t love up to season 1.

Vikings again, I didn’t think was as good a Black Sail, but in stages I think it’s better, vikings has more story lines going on. Some of the plots are good.

                Over all 3 good shows.

Another good’n of you like dry black humour real Noire, something the Americans usually can’t do well is an Amazon production called ‘The Patriot’ its about the mundane side of a spies life.

Amazon do pilot’s each year and let the views vote on what gets made, I was blown  away by the pilot of this, and it took 2 years for the season 1 to appear. It was only Feb 17 it arrived and I watched the lot in 2 nights. Real dry, on a weird way it had the office (uk) vibe about it. Without being anything like the show.

                  +1 to black sails

History on sky is also screening it now, though I don’t not where about it is in its run.

You can get prime on a monthly basis for £7.99 or talk to kodi about exodus and pay a lot less

Black sails Is a History  made show, the episode comes live on Amazon shortly after it airs or History.

Monday it comes live on Amazon, so I’ll assume it airs sunday on TV. It seems like a Sunday prime time show.

                    Not seen this week’s yet.

These shows cost a fortune to make, and are high-quality, and Amazon doesn’t make a profit on its consumer ventures (only its web and cloud services keep the company afloat). It may sound old-fashioned, but if you enjoy the shows, pay for them. The fee isn’t huge.

I must try some of this Prime Video. For me the delivery alone is worth the fee – Prime Video and Music are a nice bonus, must give some of these shows a go.

Was at my mum’s earlier (60 miles away) – she needed some C-cell batteries – I ordered them on Prime to be delivered to my mum tomorrow (have her’s as one of my addresses). Do most of my non-food shopping on there and the fee (about £1.60 per week) is well worth it even without the extras.

Can’t say I’ve noticed anything extra going out to amazon, other than purchases, but I appear to have been benefiting from Prime delivery for a while. If it’s only a couple of pints per month, maybe I didn’t notice 🙂

@Jason I agree, and sub to way more than I should, including prime, which I think is a good deal jus and for the Customer service, never mind all the perks, but if Amazon has made a clerical error, I see no harm in taking advantage.

I agree. My comment was in response to the suggestion that the shows can be watched via Kodi.

Sorry. Totally agree, if everyone didn’t pay then nothing would be made. I struggle with football. It’s the one area that is now so fragmented even if you want to pay sometimes you can’t and have to revert to streams.

I tried so hard to subscribe to Aljazeera sports, now BeIN sports, fantastic coverage of all European football, but region locked, I can easily vpn into an unlocked region, but couldnt find a way to pay them their £25pm So I fail!

I pay BT storts now, lasts season it was impossible to pay BT for the football, without either BT broadband or a sky TV subscription, two things I don’t have, but now they opened it up. And I use Now TV passes for sky games, but still the Saturday 3pm games are not aired I think the UK, so an illegal  stream it is. Now if BeIN would accept my money I could watch semi legally, ans put some money in the premier league purse, but hay, I’ll only go so far to give someone money.

What the Prem doesnt see is that by not showing 3pm games, it makes people figure out how to get free football. Then what stops them deciding to not bother paying for the avalible games.

The Prem and its partners  are actually doing themselves a long term disservice by not making Every football game avalible live. They should sell all access passes, to all games, season ticket passes to your teams games, and a day pass.

They should approach Google to do it on YouTube, as not only would the passes work, Google can sell way more adds per game than sky. Sky has say six add breaks per game, so a max of about 18 advert slots per game. Now Google could sell 1000s of targeted adds, give people tailored adds. Targeted adds are more expensive than as they have a greater impact than blanket adds, so in theory Google should be able to sell more adds (monetary aggregate) value than sky can.

Ive thought this for years, the only company that could out bid sky and BT is Google, the are in the perfect position. Maybe they are waiting for the Sky and BT money bubble to burst. I reckon it’s about 8 years off.

As to series and programs we should all pay up. Though, if I’m watching someting on C5 app, I find it likes to crash and be all round crap, so Ive been known to start a programme on the app, get pee’d off and finish the show off on kodi. It’s been a while tho, I probably haven’t launched 4 or 5 in over a year.

But will soon as I want to watch Mutiny. Looks good. They have spent some money on YouTube adds.

Well, looks like I just didn’t notice. Had a mooch around my account on Amazon and it seems I paid last September. How did I not notice that?

My subscription comes out in December easy not to notice that due to increased expenditure in that month.

I’m all for subscription based TV services, living in a large household I’m quite lucky because everyone wants something from one of the major services. Sports for me are not an issue either – no one watches that crap!   As I have said elsewhere though if the major providers do not look at cross-platform co-operation, Kodi and similar services will rise in popularity as I personally feel having 7 different subscriptions to access all the content I want costing £70+ is just too much these days. TBH I said for many years that Top Gear was the only reason I paid the license fee but now that’s gone I resent paying for 4 channels and radio stations I don’t listen too.
