I’m looking to set up a WordPress installation on my Ubuntu Studio VM so that I can start getting my websites set back up and ready to publish. The guides I’ve found all seem to need Ubuntu Server though. Is there any particular reason for this, or can I just set up LAMP then WordPress on Ubuntu Studio?

No, you don’t need a server version, just set up a lamp stack as you say. Keep in mind though you will need to change the address of your wordpress install before making live on the net. Also check just in case it may cause problems that you are building on the same php version as your final destination. Shouldn’t make a difference but every little helps.

Thanks Lee, but I’m after some practise with Linux for now. If I ever get the time to set up those servers I bought, I’ll be running a flavour of Linux on one of them.

I’m not happy with the online guides for getting it set up though. They’re titled something like ‘Install WordPress on Ubuntu 16.04’ but after you get through most of the instructions and have changed a load of settings, they refer to something that was outdated in Ubuntu 12, so it just doesn’t work. The authors don’t seem to reply to the comments asking for help then either

I’m just going to wipe the VM and start again tomorrow. I was going to do it today, but this is my first chance to get near the computer  😥

Why not install ubuntu server if you really want to get to know it. 🙂

I was thinking about it, but I’ll probably end up using Ubuntu Studio if I ever get around to switching my main machine, so I’m trying that out for now.

Depending on how nicely my home network plays, I might put one of them in the attic or the garage and use it for document storage too, or backups, but I’m still toying with that idea for now.
