Ads coming to Explorer?

You just have to look at the example of the Mac App Store to see that it wont work nicely – if Microsoft don’t allow for upgrade pricing. There are a few big name Mac developers that have pulled out of the Mac App Store completely, because they can’t offer upgrade pricing and are restricted in other ways and therefore are either losing revenue or can’t offer a product that will be the full extent of what they want to offer.

I’m not a huge fan of Windows, but I’ll give it it’s due – it works and works with the vast majority of the software. Yes, for years I was a Mac fan (and I’m now looking back wondering why I get out of the Mac ecosystem – something about pricey hardware I think!) and the fact that Windows could manage to achieve what I was after most of the time.

However, an ad in the file explorer isn’t ideal. I’d be looking at third party explorer replacements…or how to get everything working on Linux.

I’ve been a Linux advocate for a good 10 – 15 years, and granted, during the early part of my advocacy it was probably more enthusiastic than it deserved to be.

The truth is, it’s now no more difficult than Windows, and in many respects, even easier. When Windows gives you a system killer upgrade, your options are to reinstall or, ermm, that’s it.

I’ve only ever reinstalled Linux once, and that was my own lack of knowledge at the time. You can pretty much repair any failure without a complete reinstall.

I also noted that, despite Linux being mentioned, it’s been dropped from the list of affected systems from the scare stories about the CIA.

Lol, to be fair to talk talk employees and stammers alike, the I doubt many TT call centre employees know or Linux either so you would of got the same out come either way.

Not dissing TT, I’ve had no bad experiences with then over 6 or 7 years. It’s just they way of life, these first line techs, couldn’t build a Lego car, never mind fix a pc issue.

I had a very brief job at O2, Preston brook, call centre, not a bag jar tbh, and withing I The second week of being on the floor they had noticed I actually was intrested in tech, so was pulled off the floor, and pit in a room with 100s of phones and from then on my job was to press buttons and create issues, and then document my way out of the issue.

Basically create crib sheets. It was so boring. I wad terrified of the phones, but it wad the boarded that killed that job. Also i was in flux between Marines and Uni, I jacked it in after about 6 weeks.

I can honestly say it doesn’t bother me in the slightest, especially as the OS is now effectively free. I get banner ads all the time in Gmail, but I don’t see anyone banging on about that.

Are there any decent alternatives to Windows Explorer – ideally a desktop program rather than an App? Never felt the need but if ads are coming I know that will get right on my thru’pennies.

The only time I see ads on Gmail is in the wife’s account. I split her inbox to display three tabs – primary, social and promotions. It’s clear on the primary, but if she looks in the Social ( FB Notifications ) or Promotions ( Groupon/Amazon/M&S Sparks ) tab, in between the tabs and the emails there are 2 full width, one line dialogue boxes with ads in – they display the same as an email title.

I only use “inbox” and don’t see any.:)
