I had Epson XP 202 Printer and worked great with compatible inks.

Sadly it gave up last year, so I hunted for another.

I found an Epson XP 235 on Amazon and purchased it 5 months on the Epson ink ran out.

I purchased off ebay some compatibles for the 235, On installing a cyan ink via the epson prefs. It came to charging the ink but wouldn’t charge rendering it useless. I tried other colors with the same result.

I put the epson inks back in and they showed as normal, cyan still needing charging as it was empty and the charging light is on.

Have Epson totally stopped you using compatibles or is it the inks off ebay.

To purchase new Epson inks is near the same price as a new printer with ink.

However they keep changing the models XP 202 XP 235 now XP 245

      It’s hard to find a new XP202

Epson can’t change the firmware on your printer so they can’t suddenly change the rules they set at day one. They never “let you” use third party inks, the ink cartridge has to fool the printer into thinking it’s genuine. So if the printer barfs at the ink it’s the ink cartridge that isn’t showing the printer the right credentials.

I always buy mine from online shops like Prink and never get a problem.

I have never used compatibles in my old HP Photosmart C5380, mainly because it’s a 5-cart Photo printer and I print photos for the family, friends and myself. Before anyone points out that I can use a High street printing service: I know, but I like the process of doing it myself. HP ‘Viera’ inks are so good, I have some pic’s which are quite old now, some in sunlight, and they are still sharp, no fading. I use the ‘XL’ high capacity inks and I have found that ordering direct from HP is no more expensive than anywhere else, with faster delivery than anyone else.

The only problem I can foresee, is that there does not appear to be another similar HP printer as good as the 5380 in their stable now, for the same sort of money. I am probably going to have to go to a more expensive model when the 5380 dies.

My son and grandson both use Epson. Grandson’s is dad’s old Epson, uses compatibles and always has, suits him and just keeps going. Dad’s is an XP 235 and he has the same problems with compat’s that you have, John. The problem with ALL printers, is caused by manufacturers selling printers at a loss, making up the deficit by installing cartridges of low capacity for first use. They run out very quickly and they tell you that you must use genuine inks or void the printer warranty. Then they recoup their losses by selling cartridges at inflated prices, knowing they have a captive market, at least until the warranty runs out. If you attempt to use the warranty, they will ask you to return the printer, then say they have tested the ink used and it is not theirs. Result –  your warranty is dead. :negative:

Chucked a load of cheap working Epson ink sets out. I did offer them on mm. They wad the 4 colour set individuals, I had a about 30 in all. But the ink head clogged on the Epson, and I cba with ink no more so went lazar, been over a year on lazar, (maybe more) and it just works with zero maintenance. I may only be on mono, but lazer us just so much better. Ink is cheaper too, more expensive up front, but £20 gets about 5000 or more prints.

And at out rate that is a long way off, which was half the issue with ink. We didn’t use it enough for it to work when we needed it.

Thanks Dave I will have to try Prink

Good to know Bob, maybe it’s the first printer your dad has purchased and come across this.
It is my first in all the years.

Duke I did see your MM giveaway, I had XP202 at the time I don’t think yours fitted it.

@sgb101 Just be careful with cheap compatible toners. I’ve got one here that looks like it’s running out, but it’s just the low quality casing for the toner letting the powder leak into different parts of the toner casing. Luckily it hasn’t damaged the printer.

@tippon, I got a Samsung one off Amazon, there was little in the price especially when you consider how long they last.

We are still on the original, the replacement is in the office somewhere ready for when it goes. I’m almost paperless bar invoices. So the majority of prints is kids homework, which is little, and Disney pictures for my girls to colour in.

So far this samsung has been very good. And it has nfc so the wife can print off it to, by taping the phone against the printer, so I don’t get summoned when she needs stuff.
