I have been with the same ISP for internet and with the same mobile provider since they were totally different operations. However, they have now really driven me rather nuts with their latest bit of corporate cow muck. I am seriously thinking of moving to Tesco Mobile since their packages appear to offer considerably more for very considerably less money.

Doe anyone have any experience of Tesco mobile performance?

I might try them with a monthly PAYG SIM as a trial rather than stay with nothing anywhere.

I am not sure which second rate ISP I shall look at as I suspect that are all pretty good at feeding dung beetles.

Have a look a 3mobile or Giff Gaff. I really like Giff Gaff, they have the best online site, and they make migrating numbers to other sims so easy. Great for people that lose phones and sims often

There prices and bundles are great to. I have no idea of tescos set up, but the way tesco is going I’d have little faith that they will be around in a year or two. They may be, but the faith is low.

Re Internet Isp TalkTalk is great cheap and unlimited. Ive been with them about 7 years and they have given me no reason to move. And it keeps BT out my life.

No, but don’t forget Giffgaff. very much a bare-bones mobile provider but it is actually an offshoot of  O2. If other family members use Giffgaff calls/texts between you are free.

If you do go with them be prepared to do a bit of googling while you go through any setup teething problems. They keep prices low by not having any support staff. They also keep their customer communications to the bare minimum.

Never had a snag with Giffgaff and will move back to it when this contact ends.  My FiL is on Tesco and has had snags with customer services he’s 75 and if something goes wrong they treat him like crap when he rings, in store staff cannot really help(they are contracted s/employed).  Google around a bit there is a good chance you will find better deals.

Yeah, I’ve been with Tesco for the past three years and haven’t had any problems (contract). They use the O2 network like Giff Gaff, and I’ve no issues with that and I’ve had no issues when I’ve ever contacted support.

Contract wise, they offer perks like no one else does – they wont increase the contract part way through (like others do, for RPI rate rises) so you’ll only ever pay what you signed up. Like O2, they’ve now moved to flexible contracts as well – you get a contract for a SIM card and a contract for the phone. Once the phone is paid off, you’re only charged the SIM deal so you’ll be paying less, than say EE, where if you forget to call them up in 24 months when the phone has been paid off and you’re out of contract, you’ll continue to pay full whack.

My brother used to use them PAYG and they had some good deals of 3x the amount you topped or something.

If it’s any help as well, you get clubcard points 😉

Thank you to all who responded. I looked at Giffgaff as I have previously heard good things about them. However, most of their web site failed to even load at all which made it very hard to find out much about them.

I did once have an encounter with Talk Talk, they took over a service offered by someone else which became redundant as it changed so much at the time of the take over. Getting out from them was  horribly difficult as they would not take rejection easily. It was a Hotel California service. That and their habit of giving away customer details did not make me feel warm and cuddly towards them. :negative:

I am tempted to give Tesco a trial with a PAYG for a month before committing to anything serious like porting my number or anything mad like that. Nothing Anywhere (EE) have been OK-ish, I started with One2One and Freeserve before several changes that resulted in Nothing Anywhere. However, they are not cheap and the cancellation of their mail service has made me want to rethink using them. With three mobiles and broadband, the need to adjust the packages I purchase, as well as the need to establish a new mail service, a rebalancing of my/our cost base is in order. I can get a mail service tailored to my needs for between £40 and £50 pa, adjusting the broadband and mobile packages should allow me to recover most of that cost and possibly a little bit more. However I do not need or want to rush things too far. One thing is certain, BT will not be in the running since they are hiking their broadband to subsidise buying ‘services’ that I would wish to avoid and certainly never use. Because of the new phone I do now have a gmail account, but while it can be set to interwork with the likes of Outlook, which I use heavily, Gmail does not like doing so and comes with several problems for what I need. I guess I could set up several different accounts, but is that what I want?  Currently the answer to that one is no.

As I said, thank you for the feed back, I thought I would share my thoughts and reasoning as a courtesy to those who feed back. If anyone has any other comments I will use them to further refine my thinking.

PS The club card points are another ‘draw’ of course:good:. Tesco are also almost half the price of Nothing Anywhere for the equivalent or better service provision.:yahoo:

The whole family are with Tesco mobile and have been for years. Personally the customer service I’ve received, both via the phone and in store, has been first class.

My 3 contract ran out last year and I was going to move but 3 made me an offer to stay that was impossible to refuse (I’ve been with the almost since they started). Sometimes it is handy to have 2 different networks available, but TBH the only place we’ve had issues with Tesco (O2) and 3 has been fine are in West Bay (Dorset).

Continental roaming is great with 3 as it’s all year round, but Tesco did do it last summer. In fact they covered Belgium / Holland which 3 didn’t (but now do).

Roaming is not really an issue for me as long as it does not apply for going outside of Hertfordshire. The last time we were out of the country the mobile kept pinging away welcoming us to all sorts of places, but they need not have bothered as no one was going to make any calls. A holiday is to get away from troubles and the telephone only brings grief. I am not sure why we even took them with us to be honest, since then roaming might have got cheaper but the need is even less now than it was back in 2009

Jumping in here: I am looking to escape EE and considering Tesco after reading comments here. I agree with your “nothing anywhere” comments Richard: when it comes to having no signal in my own village, and no interest in a solution from EE via online or shops, I want out. I know Tesco will not be able to cure that, but at least their CS appear to be interested in customers.

Sky have opened a new mobile service, so I went to their website and attempted to sign in with the ID that I have used since last October and is saved on my browser. “Sorry but we do not recognise that username and password”.

I am now off to do battle with the Sky CS phone. I may need a lie down later….

If I cannot sign in becaues sky does not recognise my ID, I cannot contact them.

I have returned from the electronic trenches. I asked Sky why they threw out my ID sign in and they had no answer, they say that they would send me the ID they had, which proved to be the one I always used. On their advice, I set up a new password and could not sign in. I setup a new username and password and still could not sign in. Then I closed Firefox, reopened it, used the old original username and password, and was accepted. So I changed the password again just to be safe, and was accepted.

After my head stopped spinning, I had a look at Sky mobile. For TV customers, unlimited text and calls, 1 GB of data, £10 a month. There is a Rollover of data which lasts 3 years. Now I am checking Tesco.

Steve, I have never spoken to an Irish voice on a Sky CS call. Glaswegian, Merseyside and an English BBC accent only. That’s the one I have trouble with, sounds like she has a plum in her mouth. Or something…

Sky uses O2 as well, so it really is down to the price.

Get a load of free SIM cards from the big networks, try them in the areas important to you then go on price.

There are only a few actual networks, loads of MVNO though.

                                            Well these are my choices:

Sky for TV customers – 1GB data £10/month for 12 months. Free, unlimited texts & calls. No mention

Tesco, SIM only,  12 months @ £12.50/month. 750 minutes, 5000 texts, 5GB data. Get £3 off each month that I sign up to view 21 days of ads in one specific month – I don’t think so! Unused data rolls over to next month, that lasts for 3 years.

There is a similar £7.50 Tesco deal, giving the same texts and calls, with 100MB data.
