I don’t do Face book, and suggested to Tamara that she should stay away. She had already signed up, and did try to “un-sign” without success. That was a few years ago. Anyway, with her daughter using it, she joined in, and seems to be on there regularly. This morning, she called me to see the adverts which had just popped up (attached I hope) and there is my one, long standing and regular “small seller” Ebay listing. Does that mean every facebook reader gets it, or just a few. As you can see, the site appears to be in English, but her “click boxes” are in Russian. Maybe I will get my first orders from Russia?

On an unrelated topic, my ISP sends me a spam report every day. typically 1 to 6 items which I normally click to blacklist and delete. This morning, FOURTEEN entries, all identical, same sender, same message. Not uncommon to get two, but never this. Is it just “one of those things” or part of a D of S attack on something/somebody? Just curious, Les.

That’s normal behavior for Facebook. I occasionally get eBay items show up, but usually a whole host of other adverts that adblockers don’t catch.

The eBay items it shows you will be based on the browsing history of the machine etc. I often get Amazon pop up there, offering my watches or books (not that I regularly buy watches, but I’m after a specific one so I’m often browsing for them).

Maybe that explains it, that is the computer she uses for managing the Ebay account. But they ought to know.

I think the add is supplied by ebay based on the cookies on your machine.  That means it will show you something you have recently browsed in the hope you will remember you were about to buy it.
Usually it just shows me something I’ve already bought or was researching for some u related reasin.

They really should just have a simple Database that show related item (e.g. camera browsers should be show sd cards etc).

My son was telling me about this type of thing. A huge amount of it went over my head, ( as does a lot these days 🙁 ). He researched it for a job interview he was going on. It’s called “Big Data” and it can correlate practically anything you want it to. It really p*sses me off when the wife goes looking for something on Ebay, and is shown reminders that “such and such” is still available from three other sellers, if she hurries. That “such and such” was going to be a surprise present!!

The whole add system is brocken, what is the he point of offering me somthing I’ve either already looked at, so I know about it, or ive bought it. I often have adds for stuff I’ve just looked at out of intrest.

I am a fan of target adds, as well hat is the point of promoting  sanitary towels to me etc, but that the Amazon adds should do, is show adds to related items I’ve searched for, as should ebay. Then the target  adds would be appreciated and I’m sure that Amazons and ebays click rate would rocket. Win win.

Show me stuff I don’t know about, be proactive not reactige. If I search for somthing and don’t buy, for the nest 4 days show me similar  products. If I buy, for the next 4 days show me related items (accessories)  and items that other people bought with that product.  Amazon at the least should be able to do this, instead of constantly showing me the item I didn’t buy a week ago!

I bought a pair of french doors on ebay about 3 years ago and ebay still keeps trying to sell me more.  Quite why I’d want another set I’m not sure, blinds maybe but more doors, no.

My SWMBO is currently enraged by FB because lots of people from all over the world want to be her friend. She was born in Nuneaton, as were her 2 sisters, and registered on  Nuneaton Heritage site, or somesuch. I had to show her how to block most of the carp. Biggest joke for me on FB was after I sold some audio and video stuff on FB Local Sales. I listed them as sold and within a week, they were asking me if I wanted to buy ‘similar’. They know differently now…

Amazon is the worst for ads with “Recommended For You..” If I have bought one book, one pair of trousers, or any other item, they think I want more of the same. No, I bloomin well don’t: variety is the spice of life, Mr. Bezos!

Bob she needs to change who can see her profile. There is 3 options, “only friends” , “freinds of Frends”  (which is probably the best) and “All”

You’ll need to go into the private settings and set evey one to “Friends” or Friends of friends “.

If you want to be really private and nailed down keep it all to” friends”, but I find (or did), “friend of freinds” is a good happy medium as it lets people you’ll like know find you, with out be open to the world.

Steve that is what I meant when I said this:     ” I had to show her how to block most of the carp. ” I  set it to ‘friends of friends’ and she has no more problems. Well, not with that issue, anyway…. I missed the fine print in the Marriage Vows where it said “…and assist your wife in all IT situations at all times, so long as ye both shall live…”

It’s actually a Christmas tree. The Christians borrowed it.  A bit like jesus from the Jews, come to think of it.

Hate to correct you Steve, but as you live in the ‘Welsh’ part of Wales you had better get your Druid lore correct. Excepting the Yew, they did not worship Conifers (thats only for our German Royal Family), the Oak, Apple/Mistletoe and Yew would have been more likely contenders. Wiki. In the border area where I was raised, beating the Apple trees (Wassailing) was an annual excuse for the little kids to get sozzled on cider/mead, and for that year’s ‘Apple Tree’/Green Man to ply the older girls with the same but with other objectives in mind.

I’ll bet that Wassailing is another grand old custom that has now all but disappeared in this gray over-regulated PC world.

Ed is right in many ways, except for missing out the Ash tree. which was, if anything, more venerated in ancient Brythonic – Welsh culture. My Grandfather, born 1876 at Burslem in the Potteries, was 3 generations away from being Welsh, but was the most fanatical supporter of Wales and all things Welsh. As he could not make much impression upon his 8 surviving chldren (5 deceased at various times) he turned to his many grandchildren and flooded our impressionable young minds with what he thought was Welsh folklore and culture. I still remember some of the stuff he forced upon us and so do my surviving cousins. Although he passed in 1954 when I was 9, he was a true believer, even became a Druid, regularly attending the Eisteddfod with his own poetry :      https://tinyurl.com/zcqu98g    As a published poet myself (mainly under an assumed name) it must be genetic.

It was many years before I began to check all of this, at the suggestion of my dad, who was at loggerheads with granddad for many years and considered himself English to the core. I researched Welsh history and discovered that “Wales” and “Welsh” is not how the people of Cymry saw themselves to be. “Welsh” is actually derived from an Anglo-Saxon word, Weala. Roughly translated, it approximates ‘slave’, which is how the Germanic invaders saw the indigenous Brythonic people. The modern ‘Druid’ movement was in fact a Victorian invention: see Wiki –     https://tinyurl.com/ja5ow4p

Modern druids are simply nothing compared to the ancient British and Gallic priesthood, which the Romans did all they could to wipe out in the lands they conquered. Those ancient Druids were trained in memory arts, as there was no written language for the people now called Celts, until the Irish invented Ogham script. The priests were followed, worshipped and obeyed by the people and carried the whole history of their people in their heads, passing it down. Unfortunately the Romans really did wipe them out for good at the last battle of Ynys Mon, the Holy Isle now called Anglesey. The people simply lost all sense of belief, religion and purpose. You can see the results of this race memory at every sporting event between English and Welsh teams. Six generations away from my own ancestors, the hairs still rise at the back of my neck when thousands of voices sing “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau”, the Welsh National anthem. “Land of Hope And Glory” is almost as good, but “God Save The Queen” is a turgid, boring mess.

Here endeth the history lesson. Sit up at the back, there! :bye:
