I’m kinda scared to post this at Blender Artists, since I’ve posted so many “Finished” projects that I’ve then gone on to refine.

Anyhoo, not quite finished (the rug is too fine), but my latest offering.

      Fire Place

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Nice lighting, very well executed. Nice random brickwork too.

A very minor texturing/composition critique – fireplace is too clean, no soot etc. It needs a bit of ‘grunge’ applied. No red glowing ash in grate.

There is actually soot in the fireplace (and I spent a crap load of time building the map for it), but I may have gone overboard with the light emission from the fire and it’s simply blown out.

I’ve also spotted a problem with the normal map, so hopefully, the next render will fix. I’m gonna set it off overnight (it’s 4+ hours), so maybe tomorrow I can update.

Again very nice, but if you don’t mind me being picky; then harking back to the wood burning fireplaces of my youth and in the US, it is still squeaky clean even the usual smoke spillover at the top of the fireplace has been wirebrushed.

This image shows the sort of soot and ash I remember. This one shows the smoke spillover.

Going off topic, apologies. This is a real sooty fireplace:

No fire in this since around 1970, I believe. (we came here in 2003) It was ours in the bungalow and behind it was a solid fuel back boiler, which I discovered was dangerous and should have been removed when the landlord capped the chimney. It was behind a steel panel screwed to the wall and took 3 years of complaining until I contacted the Environment Agency, who forced the landlord to remove the whole fireplace, brick it up and seal it. There were some monster spiders behind there, you can see the webs. Only one was still alive but I managed to scoop her* up and escort her off the premises, unhurt. I don’t mind the spiders here, after seeing some of the specimens in the Far East and Middle East. But my SWMBO is terrified of them. And frogs, for some reason. Now I view both of those as helpful, as they eat insects: specifically flies. Being surrounded by farmland means flies. Big blue buggas.

*The big ones are always female. The males are either hiding between matings, or food for the females after mating.

Yes Bob, that is the sort of soot I remember. The pic also captures the scoured clean fireclay of the ‘throat’ and base of the hearth.

OK, insane January tax deadline (not a month with a lot of free time for a tax specialist), and Leanne has been over for a few days, so not had time to work on this, but how do you like this version?
