Otherwise I would recommend Double Twist. But Play Music sees me through now.

February 17, 2017 at 10:42 am #3967I know of no completely free player that will do what you want, of course, you have Deezer and Spotify with adverts. Google Play is subscription based I believe with a free trial. I liked Spotify for many years the subscription allowed for downloads to the device for offline music.
You don’t mention what phone you use Samsung’s own player is ok I despise iTunes. If you already have all the music you want.
You might want to check out media monkey if you have an android phone there is a free and a paid for version but allows easy control of your media collection.

February 17, 2017 at 2:11 pm #3972Play music is free – and you get (I think) 20GB free to upload your music (which miraculously is in much better shape when you download it again!). I’m very set in my ways, all my music is organised in a folder tree and the app Folder Music Player suits me. I stumped up for the pro – either to support the dev or remove ads – can’t remember.
A lot depends how your content is organised and tagged, but for offline playback in accordance with how you organised it the player above is my weapon of choice.
February 17, 2017 at 2:25 pm #3974It’s 50,000 songs you can upload. As mentioned, they sound way better than the original files. :yahoo:
February 17, 2017 at 2:59 pm #3976Ah right – still plenty (for me anyway). I went though a slow, painful but worth-it exercise to tag all my music as I want it before uploading – using Mp3Tag – so that the music appears on Google Play like it does on my hard drive(s) and SD card(s). Then after upload – the google cap allowed me to do my whole collection – downloaded it again, replacing the originals and as you say “happy days” !!
I’m half way through a free 4 month trial of full (paid) Google music – don’t think I’ve used it once – which reinforces I don’t need it.
February 17, 2017 at 3:54 pm #3977Personally, I don’t like Google Play Music. Every time I’ve tried to use it through Google Now, and quite a few times I’ve used it normally, it’s ignored my choice to stay offline, and it’s played music from my online library. It’s all well and good if I’m at home, but it’s a PITA when I’m out. Apart from a crap signal interrupting playback, it eats into any data cap you may have.
I’m using the now discontinued Fusion Music Player at the moment, but am still on the lookout for something better too.
February 17, 2017 at 5:33 pm #3980Yeah I know what you mean. I don’t use it (Google) as a player, but as a means of tidying up your ripped (etc!) music it is superb. You get everything held online (or saved back locally) in (normally) much better condition than you uploaded (or whatever it does) is.
So much depends on how you want to access your music, I’m happy with the player I linked above for local, and with Spotify Free for “surprise me”. I also get Amazon Prime Music which is OK – but not full featured, handy though and lets you keep a lot offline.
I’ve got the paid PowerAmp which does loads but not (that I’ve found) just open a folder of music (say where you have saved an album) and play it back in the order of the folder…..seems such a simple and logical think but most players don’t seem to want to do it….including basic players like stick Android and ES.
February 18, 2017 at 10:45 am #4025Thanks everyone. I started at the top of this thread and worked down.
Google wants bank card. Dream on.
Double twist. Control NFC et al.
Play Music. Possible. How bad are ads?
@Robin Yes it’s a Samsung. There is an individual file player. No player (uninstalled?) though.
Media Monkey. On the shortlist. B-)
Music Folder Player Free. Ads.
I had an epiphany half way through this reply. Does VLC have a mobile version? Yes. B-)
My phone is a SM-G357FZ. ‘No suggestions’ result from Samsung website. :negative:

February 18, 2017 at 12:16 pm #4038You can hit ‘skip’ when Google asked for payment info.
February 18, 2017 at 12:17 pm #4039Try Simple Media Player.
I’ve not used his media player but have used a couple of his other apps before.

February 18, 2017 at 2:32 pm #4049VLC
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
February 18, 2017 at 2:48 pm #4052VLC on a PC is my choice too. It has some hidden strengths. However for some reason it has been emasculated in the phone version.
February 19, 2017 at 9:28 am #4100Ta much.
@Robin, IIRC I will have uninstalled it two years ago.
Steve, No skip. It chinned me off.
@Drezha, That’s more like it. None of those crazy permissions. B-)
@D-Dan, That’s two of us then. B-) B-)@Ed P, I’m trying it now.

February 19, 2017 at 12:54 pm #4114Not a big fan of Android VLC – there is another ad-free player here if (only if) you want a simple player that plays on the basis of how you have your music organised rather than based on taggging. Similar to Folder Music Player (Free) but no ads.

February 19, 2017 at 3:09 pm #4128I agree BL, I think the phone versions of VLC have all been emasculated. I guess the porting was not carried out with luv.
February 19, 2017 at 3:22 pm #4130I use Poweramp. I liked it so I got the paied for version but the free version is still good.
February 20, 2017 at 10:15 pm #4209Poweramp was pretty good (not tried it for a while), but I found the free version either limited or ad-infested, or something (there was a reason I stopped using it, just my old addled brain can’t remember what it was).
