      Hi Guys

Can any of you gamer types recommend a cheap 1TB external for my lads xbox one. I am way behind in whats good and what is not. You see bus powered ones (2.5 inch I presume) recommended by some and the bigger external powered 3.5 full fat drives by others. I would of thought the 3.5″ drives would be better as they spin faster assuming they are 7200 rather than 5200 rpm. It has to be cheap as big sister is buying it him for his birthday. Daughter number 2 laid claim to my Xbox a few years ago So haven’t really really followed that side of things

      Thanks Mark

Have a look at this article.

#2 would have been my choice any way, I use these Toshiba Canvios a lot for mobile storage and as backup drives for Synology NAS. One is attached to the back of my Freesat TV right now. They have proved very reliable.

I got another one of these for under 40 quid, had one for years as my portable Netflix machine, and it still chigging along. The new one I got to borrow my DJs collection of music and  kareoke stuff, for over trh Xmas period.

It will work on Xbox and PS, I just checked in the coments.

Inside is a WD blue drive, don’t know if that’s a positive or negative. But there you go.

The photos I’ve seen of strip downs show the internal drive is 5,400 rpm. TBH a 7,200 rpm is unlikely to make a really noticeable difference in the real world so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Looking at my Amazon orders, these are the drives I’ve been buying: Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable and Seagate Expansion Portable in various capacities.

I’ve had a little look around and a few people seem to recommend the seagate hdds as being good for xbox. A trip down to currys to have a look at them at the weekend may be in order. I really need to catch up on tech.

              Cheers guys

I wouldn’t agonise over it, any well known brand and USB 3 are all you really need to look for.

As for technology, hard drives haven’t really progressed that much for PCs, but they do specialist drives now for NAS boxes (24 x 7, vibration and heat) and Surveillance (24 x 7, vibration and heat, 64 video streams, emphasis on writing and protecting against bit rot). These are available in huge capacities, I’m just about to order a couple of 10TB surveillance drives.

Another vote for Toshiba Canvios. Have two 4TB USB’s here (full of media that streams locally from router and STB –  idetical content – they back each other up) – and a 3TB that goes on holiday with us. All rock solid for a couple of years and counting. Very well priced when I bought them too.
