Gravis on Twitter has a complaint to which I can relate:

He complains that nearly everything on a modern PC performs poorly compared with Windows 98 second edition software days (exclude graphics/games software in this). To which I’d add it is also bloated by a factor of ten+.

The days of tightly written code have disappeared, instead we have buggy bloatware, which is then slowed down by the web’s interminable Ad/cookie cross referencing limited by the speed of the slowest Ad web site.

Frankly I do not think that Cloud computing has added very much for the end-user but it is probably an essential ingredient in a Society where User Personal Info  is worth big bucks.

Ed I think for good or bad that end devices are increasingly mobile and that for anywhere except business and a few niche users, a genuine PC user will eventually die off.

A great number of younger people do all their “computing” on a phone, and as the phone’s get bigger even (especially) laptops and tablets are on the endangered list.

I completely agree with the sentiment, but think the issue is bigger than that – in a generation or so the PC (and so Windows) won’t exist as a domestic product.

I’m saying all this as someone who still far prefers the screen size and ease of typing of a laptop, but I’m a dinosaur. I’d be very surprised if Windows is still a consumer product in 10 years.

Coincidentally Ed, today a guy from a computer club answered my Freecycle ad and took away loads of stuff I just could not sell over the last few years. As I was making him a box up, out fell a brand new pack of Verbatim floppies, clipped to the box was a “True Type Fonts” floppy and —- a Windows 98 SE Boot floppy! Missus wondered why I went quiet after hearing a laugh, came to see me looking at the floppies and shaking my head.

Which bears out BL’s point: it’s all progress and it is all now gathering so much momentum, in so many directions, that not many of us here can realistically forecast what will be the computing medium in ten years.

Having said that, I still have my old retail disc, in correct jewel case, of Windows 98 SE, together with the “Get Started” book and other stuff. Might send it to TNMOC at Bletchley. I certainly won’t be using it. And you are reading a Reply from the bloke who has only just switched to Windows 10! Which is taking me some time, btw, to get used to. I was OK until my printer decided not to print Emails and web pages from Win 10. I thrashed it into submission eventually.

Bloody peripherals, got a mind of their own!😆🙄

When the Thought Police arrive at your door, think -
          I'm out.
