Yes I am biting the bullet at last, need quick advice!
I currently have: Sandisk 480 GB SSD with Win7/64 Home, (‘C’ Drive) and a Seagate 2TB spinner (‘H’ Drive). I have copied all relevant data, music and pics that I want to keep, to the 2TB spinner. My g’son gave me a USB ISO of Win10, which I have used once to install a fresh Win 10 to my son’s PC. I used his Win 7 CoA key to do that and I will use my own (Retail) CoA Key to install my Win 10.
My question is: can I install Win 10 to the SSD, then transfer all the data, etc, to the SSD from the spinner, which will then become storage? Or will I have to disconnect the spinner whilst installing Win 10?
Later still, I will install Win 10 on SWMBO’s laptop with the same ISO and her laptop’s Win 7 CoA,* saving all data etc, to a 64 GB Corsair USBb drive. I will also completely format the Lenovo and get rid of the bloatware. Been trying to get to these jobs for ages, but other work, illness, family problems all took priority. Now of course, time is short.
Thanks for any advice, guys.

I'm out.December 16, 2019 at 5:42 pm #38893Disconnect the spinner for safety’s sake. Then there can be no accidents.
You can sort out the dvd and spinners drive letters later if you want to.
December 16, 2019 at 5:52 pm #38894Bob just to add always worth checking the W10 ISO you have is current – the old versions will work but can extend your “windows update” chores considerably. The latest ISOs (also downloadable to create a USB installer) are available here. Despite the end of the “free upgrade” from 7/8 to 10 I have done several using the W7 key when asked by the W10 installer and they have all activated fine online (most recently within the last 6 months at a guess).
December 16, 2019 at 6:56 pm #38895Please do disconnect the spinner before doing the upgrade. It should not happen but if the spinner ever had Windows on it then the Windows installer may decide to repair and use that system partition while installing the Windows partition on the SSD. All will seem fine until you unplug the spinner and find the system will not boot !
The W7 retail key will work on ONE PC at a time for evermore according to MS, that has been so since the fall update.
December 17, 2019 at 9:15 am #38901Well I had a think after posting. Went to Windows 7/10 Forums (not used for a while), read and used the Tutorial, downloaded the latest 10 from there, installed Win 10 and it all went well. Spinner is recognised as H drive, all files returned, peripherals picked up. Just installed Firefox, coming back to it later. Chrimble shop today and dear daughter was subjected to the antics of a crazy driver yesterday on her way to work, her 15 yo Mazda a write off. Gd in car but no injuries thanks be! So some dad stuff to do, including taxi work and a shoulder if she needs it. Never rains but…

December 17, 2019 at 12:10 pm #38905Glad to hear they’re both ok. The car can be replaced, but they can’t
December 17, 2019 at 7:27 pm #38915Yep they are both OK thanks JayCeeDee and Ryan, but SIL is not, his lovely Mondeo is now being used by daughter to ferry her and granddaughter to work and school.
I am finding my feet (and fingers) in Windows 10. Have booted Ms Office and installed Open Office, as all my zillions of doc’s are in OO and I like it better. Also installed Firefox and elbowed both Edge and Cortana. What I can’t figure out is why “Programs & Features” has carried over from Windows 7 ‘as is’. Still works OK, but I thought 10 had another way of doing that? And I notice that the font here in Forumite Replies has changed to what looks like Times New Roman, or similar. Used to look like Arial. And the (“) and (@) keys are swapped around, which means I have to go into Devices and change the suddenly-altered US Keyboard back to UK. Ah well as long as I can read and type it, I’m doing well. Btw, I did not disconnect the spinner and it still has the data, pics and docs which will be another backup.
Guys my No.2 gson has asked how to get into Forumite, so he may be along at some point. He is quite dyslexic, so please try to give him a little leeway. Any problems, I can usually decipher what he means.

As for grandson getting on here and us understanding, we are used to Steve!!!
Sorry, Steve. 😁
December 17, 2019 at 7:45 pm #38920Thanks for that Nolan. I was waiting for someone to come out with that one! Personally, I try not to upset Scousers, the last one I upset threw a felling axe at me. Really… Because I wouldn’t serve him any more booze. Huyton, 1970 IIRC.

I'm out.December 19, 2019 at 8:44 pm #39009I have been using 10 all week now and I have to say that I should have done the switch a long time ago. I love it! Put right the few problems I had, slowly getting everything as I like it.
